1. Life Of Pi By Martel Yann
Product Details:
This brilliant fabulist novel combines the delight of kipling's just so stories with the metaphysical adventure of jonah and the whale, as pi, the son of a zookeeper, is marooned aboard a lifeboat with a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan, and a tiger. winner of the 2002 man booker prize for fiction pi patel is an unusual boy. the son of a zookeeper, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior, a fervent love of stories, and practices not only his native hinduism, but also christianity and islam. pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and richard parker, a 450-pound bengal tiger. soon the tiger has dispatched all but pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with richard parker for 227 days lost at sea. when they finally reach the coast of mexico, richard parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. the japanese authorities who interrogate pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them the truth. after hours of coercion, pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional-but is it more true? life of pi is at once a realistic, rousing adventure and a meta-tale of survival that explores the redemptive power of storytelling and the transformative nature of fiction. it's a story, as one character puts it, to make you believe in god.
Reviews:
Winner of the prestigious British Booker Prize in 2002, this book tells the story of a boy named Patel and his adventure of being lost at sea for many months. Patel is stranded in a boat along with a tiger, zebra, and hyena. This is storytelling at its best! The first few chapters are relatively slow-moving, but this is necessary for character development and the plot background. A very fun, yet intelligent book that you will enjoy!kate*and*lilo
Sara F
2. Dover Thrift Editions: Frankenstein By Mary Shelley (1994, Paperback)
Product Details:
Obsessed by creating life itself, victor frankenstein plunders graveyards for the material to fashion a new being, which he shocks into life by electricity. but his botched creature, rejected by frankenstein and denied human companionship, sets out to destroy his maker and all that he holds dear.
Reviews:
This text the masterstroke of its sometimes overshadowed author Mary Shelley is an esteemed conflagration of early 19th century themes encompassing morality, science and the spiritual makeup of humanity. Its plot surrounds Victor Frankenstein who seeks the gift of life and forbidden knowledge of Prometheus' gift to man. The carrion monster that he creates is emotionally scarred by the inhuman suffering it endures by human hand and eventually seeks satisfaction in ruining its creator. Descending from a long of line of dramatic tragedies this story no doubt holds true and in no small way does it revolutionize contemporary notions of horror and social ethos. Ranked among such great contemporary works of the time as "A protrait of Dorian Gray", Frankenstein is a must read for all those with an interst in our cultural and literary history.vorsach

Many people miss understood Mr. Campings conclusion. Mr. Camping thought because 1994 was such a prominent year based upon Biblical information that it could be the end of the world. He never stated it would be the end of the world. The fact is he wrote a follow up book to 1994? entitled Are You Ready?, with the subtitle Much more evidence that 1994 COULD be the end of the world.. 5. Lessons In Chemistry: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller – goodreads choice award winner – meet elizabeth zott: a “formidable, unapologetic and inspiring” (parade) scientist in 1960s california whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved tv cooking show in this novel that is “irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel” (the new york times book review) and “witty, sometimes hilarious . . . the catch-22 of early feminism.” (stephen king, via twitter) a best book of the year: the new york times, washington post, npr, oprah daily, entertainment weekly, newsweek“the most delightful novel i read this year . . . fresh and surprising . . . i laughed out loud!” —philip galanes, the new york times "a unique heroine . . . you'll find yourself wishing she wasn’t fictional." —seattle times chemist elizabeth zott is not your average woman. in fact, elizabeth zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. but it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at hastings research institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. except for one: calvin evans; the lonely, brilliant, nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. true chemistry results. but like science, life is unpredictable. which is why a few years later elizabeth zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of america’s most beloved cooking show supper at six. elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. but as her following grows, not everyone is happy. because as it turns out, elizabeth zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. she’s daring them to change the status quo. laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, lessons in chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

Entertaining and fast reading. Characters have some depth. Better than a soap opera but not classic.Evy
Thanks to NetGalley & Doubleday Books for a digital advance reader's copy. All comments and opinions are my own. This novel, a debut no less, was all over the place for me. Funny, satirical, sad, ironic, entertaining, witty, with elements of fantasy and feminism. And don't forget the magic realism of the dog. So did I like the novel and how would I rate it? I'm giving it 4 stars – read my review to find out why. Cleverly written with a quirky and memorable heroine, this is the story of chemist Elizabeth Zott. In the 1950s, when the story begins, it was very nearly impossible to be anything but a housewife/mother, nurse, or secretary. But Elizabeth fights against stereotypes throughout the novel – whether it's cooking, rowing, motherhood, or chemistry. Elizabeth's on-the-spectrum personality (literal, headstrong, blunt) propels the plot. And the plot is brilliant – things happen and people connect (and reconnect) in ways that both surprised me and had me admiring how the author fit everything together. There were several provoking aspects to the story – some of which were the way people misunderstood each other, the sexist attitudes, and how some characters fought against and often overcame the 1950s cultural norms. What gives the novel depth is that the story is told from different characters' points of view, including Six-Thirty, the dog. And these characters were compelling. The reader learns what each is thinking, and why, and we can often anticipate the way things will be misunderstood, which makes for laughs as well as sighs. While the book contains a great deal of wit, as another reviewer mentioned, there are serious issues including brutal abuse which is described in detail, and a suicide due to homophobia. And the sexism is rampant which unfortunately was how it was back in the 1950s, with some areas still troublesome today. But in the end the bad guys get their comeuppance, with loose ends tied up, providing a satisfying conclusion.PhyllisE
6. The Host: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
The author of the twilight series of #1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake. – melanie stryder refuses to fade away. the earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. – wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. but there was one difficulty wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. – melanie fills wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man melanie loves–jared, a human who still lives in hiding. unable to separate herself from her body's desires, wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. as outside forces make wanderer and melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love. – featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, the host is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.
Reviews:
Stephanie Meyer is so much more than the Twilight Saga! The Host is one of my favorite books and I have read it over and over, and will continue to do so. It’s one of those books that you really kind of have to force yourself through the first 80 pages or so. Those first chapters are so important for back story and creating this world, so they are necessary but hard the first time reading to get through. The idea of this book is so unique amongst so many other science fiction and fantasy works, it truly stands out as an original concept. Stephanie Meyer writes beautifully and it’s easy to get absorbed in the story and want more. READ THIS BOOK!jamie.b
After coming off from her successful YA best-selling novel series 'Twilight' Stephenie Meyer makes her adult novel debut with 'The Host'. Earth has been invaded by a race of aliens known as 'souls'. These souls implant themselves into the human body. Once implanted the souls have access to all of their hosts' memories and emotions. Since the invasion on Earth nearly all humans have been implanted but some have resisted the invasion and have been hiding out doing whatever is necessary to stay alive and not be captured. Melanie Stryder her brother and her boyfriend Jamie have been doing just that staying alive. Then the unthinkable happens Melanie is caught on a mission and her body is taken over by a soul called 'Wanderer'. Melanieës memories are very strong and she fights within herself to keep Wanderer from taking over completely. Wanderer gives in and Melanie convinces Wanderer to look for her brother and Jamie in the hot Arizona desert. After finally finding them Wanderer begins to love Melanie's bother like her own and with Melanie's thoughts; she fights her body's attraction to Jamie while her own personal feelings grow for another human named Ian. It's a love triangle like you've never read before. Stephenie Meyer has an amazing ability for detail. By discussing the invasion of other planets before Earth you are able to visualize what it would be like to live as a soul on another planet. You begin to question humanity and what it really means to be 'human'. This novel will make you wonder if you were Melanie could you grow to love someone whose species took over your body your memories and your planet for the good of their own kind? This is an engaging read and will keep you reading into the early morning hours. I would highly consider buying this novel and adding it to your growing Stephenie Meyer collection. This book is amazing and has one of the most unique story lines I've ever read. Though the book is very well written, the beginning is kind of boring but it does pick up after a few chapters and keeps getting better and better. It's about a world where aliens have invaded and taken over the bodies and minds of humans. The main character is an alien who takes over the body of a human girl but is not able to take over her mind. The alien becomes friends with the girl who convinces her to run away and find her family. The romance is amazing and the characters are really likable.annie.h
7. Lois Lowry: The Giver [Paperback]
Product Details:
Soon to be a major motion picture, the giver, the 1994 newbery medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. the haunting story centers on twelve-year-old jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. not until he is given his life assignment as the receiver of memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. lois lowry has written three companion novels to the giver, including gathering blue, messenger, and son.
Reviews:
I bought this book for my 11yo son during the iso period to keep him busy and apparently, he has read this as part of reading prog in year 4! So he recommended that I've read it and I'm on the last chapter now. It's been decades since I burnt the midnight oil so I'm on the last chapter now before I can watch the giver movie by Meryl Streep! The book talks a community living in a "dome" where it's climate control, memories with held and lives a very structure livelihood akin to communism somehow but with supernatural powers. Reminds me bit of the Truman show by Jim Carey where it's all not true but a virtual world!JT
Jonas lives in a community that appears, on first acquaintance, to be perfect. It's a world without crime, and with no unemployment—and therefore no poverty—nobody has to suffer hunger pangs, never mind the torment of starvation and homelessness. All members of a family unit share the experiences and “feelings” of their day each evening and nobody lies. Or so Jonas believes. Only when he learns that his lifetime job is to be the Receiver (taking on all the memories of both pain and joy that have been banished from his society, and being given permission to lie) does he realise the community's creators have banished even more good than evil from his society. Jonas and his tutor, the previous Receiver, to whom he gives the title the Giver, decide that the cost of their stable society is too high … Jonas's community clearly doesn't cover the whole world in which it is set, and one doesn't even have to travel over water to reach “Elsewhere”, of which there are hints relatively early in the book. Most members of the community clearly believe that this is where people who are “released” go. Young readers possibly might not guess the truth here but I'm sure adult readers will. For a book with such a complex set-up The Giver is amazingly short at fewer than 200 pages. If it had been a novel for adults I think it would have contained a lot more detail on how this utopian society was set up, because it does leave you asking questions about it. Lowry does, however, give enough detail for the purpose of her story and she handles it deftly, never getting in the way of the forward motion of the plot and therefore taking the risk of boring young readers. I was amazed to hear that The Giver was on the list of "most challenged" books for 2000, on the grounds of "being sexually explicit, having occult themes, violence". I didn't see anything in it that was inappropriate for its audience of young adults and anything of a sexual nature was hinted at rather than "explicit". The Giver is a thoroughly gripping read and beautifully written.
This is an incredible book and I loved every minute of it. The story line is intriguing from the beginning – set in the future it tells the story of a 'perfect' society that exists where everyone home is uniform. Pain and sadness are unknown in this seemingly perfect world. In the community exists a 'giver' who has been given memories from the past. The book tells the story of Jonas, a 12 year old boy, who has been chosen to receive memories of pain and sadness. He goes on a journey of discovery to see the real meaning behind what is happening in his community. Lois Lowry has done an amazing job writing this book. It toys with the idea of taking away choice from people's lives and creating a world where everyone and everything are very uniform. Her interpretation of that kind of world is simply intriguing. A great read and I would recommend it to anyone.
8. Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make The Leap…and Others Don't [Book]
Product Details:
The challenge built to last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the dna of an enterprise from the verybeginning. but what about the company that is not born with great dna? how can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness? the study for years, this question preyed on the mind of jim collins. are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? and if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great? the standards using tough benchmarks, collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. how great? what was different? why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good? over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. after sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness — why some companies make the leap and others don't. the findings the findings of the good to great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. the findings include:level 5 leaders: the research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness. the hedgehog concept (simplicity within the three circles): to go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence. a culture of discipline: when you combine a culture of discipline with an ethic of entrepreneurship, you get the magical alchemy of great results. technology accelerators: good-to-great companies think differently about the role of technology. the flywheel and the doom loop: those who launch radical change programs and wrenching restructurings will almost certainly fail to make the leap.“ some of the key concepts discerned in the study,” comments jim collins, "fly in the face of our modern business culture and will, quite frankly, upset some people.” perhaps, but who can afford to ignore these findings?
Reviews:
I was required to purchase this book for a graduate class. It is hands down the best business book I have ever read. It's predecessor Built to Last builds on top of Good to Great. Reading this book not only helps you in the business arena, but it offers insight into yourself. This book challenges every notion you've had of business and really makes you think. Phenomenal.silentks
After reading this book I was not very impressed. Jim Collins started with a template and tried to find companies that would fit into his template. His leadership idea is nothing new and he could have taken all the leaders in the world and found stories that fit into his mold. His revelations are obnoxious and he spends about half the book talking about the good to great concept instead of using deep analysis to uncover some hidden truths. One of the greatest flaws of this book is how he took a good look at certain companies through interviews but he failed to study any of the accounting changes that effected some of the businesses he discusses. One of the most notable is Walgreen's and circuit city who were able to structure their leases in such a way that they did not have to disclose them on the balance sheet as assets or liabilities. Walgreens and Circuit City grew because their bankers didn't get the full picture of how much debt the company was able to take on under the table and not disclose. Now that these companies are forced to disclose that information they appear less solvent and their stock price has adjusted to reality. Additionally Circuit City tanked when the new accounting practices and bad economy showed how insolvent they really were. Other things Jim Collins failed to mention involved the establishment of right to work states that ended union control on companies and allowed NUCOR to establish one of the most efficient manufactures in the world. Most of the companies Jim talks about have fallen apart in heaps and are bad to average. He should have written a book about how little research he had to do to write a book that would get praise from the entire academic sector but be a complete bad to worse book at best. Don't buy the book! Save your money and take some accounting classes and you can then uncover what takes a company from good to great!ammon15
Jim Collins Answers the Social Sector with a Monograph to Accompany Good to Great. 30-50% of those who bought Good to Great work in the Social Sector. This monograph is a response to questions raised by readers in the social sector. It is not a new book. Jim Collins wants to avoid any confusion about the monograph being a book by limiting its distribution to online retailers. Based on interviews and workshops with over 100 social sector leaders. The difference between successful organizations is not between the business and the social sector, the difference is between good organizations and great ones.william_uhd

10. The Myth Of Normal: Trauma, Illness, And Healing In A Toxic Culture [Book]
Product Details:
The instant new york times bestsellerby the acclaimed author of in the realm of hungry ghosts, a groundbreaking investigation into the causes of illness, a bracing critique of how our society breeds disease, and a pathway to health and healing.in this revolutionary book, renowned physician gabor maté eloquently dissects how in western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. nearly 70 percent of americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. in canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. in europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. and everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. so what is really “normal” when it comes to health? over four decades of clinical experience, maté has come to recognize the prevailing understanding of “normal” as false, neglecting the roles that trauma and stress, and the pressures of modern-day living, exert on our bodies and our minds at the expense of good health. for all our expertise and technological sophistication, western medicine often fails to treat the whole person, ignoring how today’s culture stresses the body, burdens the immune system, and undermines emotional balance. now maté brings his perspective to the great untangling of common myths about what makes us sick, connects the dots between the maladies of individuals and the declining soundness of society—and offers a compassionate guide for health and healing. cowritten with his son daniel, the myth of normal is maté’s most ambitious and urgent book yet.

11. The Great Divorce [Book]
Product Details:
In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in hell and embarks on an incredible voyage to heaven. anyone in hell is invited on board, and anyone may remain in heaven if he or she so chooses. this powerful, exquisitely written fantasy is one of c.s. lewis's most enduring works of fiction and a profound meditation on good and evil and on what god really offers us.
Reviews:
C. S. Lewis does not disappoint with this fantasy and it's thought- provoking imagery. It compels the reader to re-examine relationships and choices in their life and how they effect others souls as well as their own. The character of God is revealed to be all powerful, quick to forgive all, and love incarnate.carolyn390
I love this book because I am a big Lewis fan. I read this book for the first time in high school in 11th grade from the recomendation from my older brother. I fell in love with this book immediately, and I even wrote a 16-page paper about him. This is a good book confronting the reality of what Heaven and Hell really are. It is a short book, but it does not lack in description or symbolism. If you haven't read anything by Lewis but the Chronicles, don't expect this book to be the same. It is totally different, yet to those who are Lewis fanatics, The Great Divorce is very much like the Chronicles. When I say they are different, I mean the Chronicles are Sci-Fi, but The Great Divorce though it is fantasy, it is more realistic than talking fawns and whatnot.kathartheart
Admittedly, I have a certain degree of difficulty decoding C.S. Lewis's brand of science fiction/Christian fiction. It is not so much that I can not appreciate his writing as that I have trouble picturing the fantastic concepts that Lewis paints. This being said, I was able to take quite a lot from this book. In "The Great Divorce", the narrator dreams he has taken a bus ride that allows him a visit to eternity. Visiting both heaven and hell, Lewis paints a picture that in some ways reminds me of the movie "What Dreams May Come". Beneath the imagery is a morality play in which people's choices have consequences. Some people make choices that put them in a position that causes harm to their soul which can be healed if they are made to see their fault. The most famous line of the book epitomizes the concept: "thy will be done" or "Thy will be done". Readers need not accept the imagery created in this book to appreciate the messages. Choices have consequences for our soul. The correct choices decrease the burden on our soul and allow us the opportunity of eternal life in paradise

An orc walks away from her old life to open a coffee shop. In a city where almost no one has even heard of "exotic bean water". And that's pretty much the crux of the story, give or take. At face value it sounds kinda cute but nothing I'd expect to be enthusiastically shoving in people's faces, telling them how much they'll love it. Viv's story felt like a comfort read from very early on and I can easily see this being a go to read when I need some time out. I adored Viv, Tandri, Hem, Thimble, Pendry and Cal individually but together this diverse group of kindred spirits felt like home (the good kind). I love that Viv was able to let go of the life that was expected of her and find a bunch of supportive friends who could see beyond her past to who she truly was, friends that encouraged her in her new venture and who had her back. "If mortal danger threatens us, I promise to hide behind you. Deal?" While Tandri was my favourite character, I also had a soft spot for Pendry. I enjoyed cheering them on as they gained the confidence to step outside their comfort zone. I absolutely need a dire-cat in my life. Favourite no context quote: "Things don't have to stay as what they started out as" I'm giving this book however many hm's it takes to fill five stars and can't wait to meet more of Thune's inhabitants in the author's next book. In the meantime, I'd like to order a bean water with milk and a heavenly frosted cinnamon pastry please. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Tor, an imprint of Pan Macmillan, for the opportunity to read this book.Schizanthus Nerd

[a] masterpiece.”—the new york times book review – the epic rendering of a black woman’s journey through slavery and liberation, set in 17th-century colonial brazil; the return of a major voice in american literature. – first discovered and edited by toni morrison, gayl jones has been described as one of the great literary writers of the 20th century. now, for the first time in over 20 years, jones is ready to publish again. palmares is the first of five new works by gayl jones to be published in the next two years, rewarding longtime fans and bringing her talent to a new generation of readers. – intricate and compelling, palmares recounts the journey of almeyda, a black slave girl who comes of age on portuguese plantations and escapes to a fugitive slave settlement called palmares. following its destruction, almeyda embarks on a journey across colonial brazil to find her husband, lost in battle. – her story brings to life a world impacted by greed, conquest, and colonial desire. she encounters a mad lexicographer, desperate to avoid military service; a village that praises a god living in a nearby cave; and a medicine woman who offers great magic, at a greater price. – combining the author’s mastery of language and voice with her unique brand of mythology and magical realism, jones reimagines the historical novel. the result is a sweeping saga spanning a quarter century, with vibrant settings and unforgettable characters, steeped in the rich oral tradition of its world. of gayl jones, the new yorker noted, “[her] great achievement is to reckon with both history and interiority, and to collapse the boundary between them.” like nothing else before it, palmares embodies this gift.
