5. Breath: The New Science Of A Lost Art [Book]

Product Details:
A new york times bestseller – no matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny or young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing properly. – there is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat twenty-five thousand times a day. yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. journalist james nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. none of this should be possible, and yet it is. you will never breathe the same again.
Reviews:
Breath is a fascinating journey into a typically overlooked territory for most of us. We take breathing for granted yet it is imperative for living out the day, and most of it do it badly. The results are poor health in many ways, which have alternative explanations–or no explanation (can you say idiopathic?) High blood pressure. Diabetes. Sleep apnea. Waking up at night to pee. Misaligned teeth. Obesity. Chronic stuffed up nose. Yes, all related to and some caused by faulty breathing and can be cured by better breathing. This book could improve your life or the life of someone you love. Get it. Read it. Do it.DEBBIE
I would buy this product again as the information in 'Breath' is so beneficial to our health that I think everyone should read this book. I am sharing this information with as many people I can. I finished reading this book, and am reading it for the second time so that I do not miss any of the important facts on how to breathe properly. It is that important! I have just finished reading this book and I am reading again so that I do not miss any of the important facts. I am also passing on the information in the book to people I know as I think everyone should know how to breathe properly – for the sake of their own health.Happy reader
Everyone should read this book. It's engaging right the way through and explores a subject so fundamental to life, you will be surprised, enlightened, empowered – and will know so much more about the power of breath by the time you have finished this book! From my perspective as a yoga teacher, this is the best most inclusive, informative and readable book out there on this subject. It is well backed up by research and very respectful of ancient knowledge. Should be required reading for all medical practitioners!carbargil
6. Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind [Book]

Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout.new york times bestsellera summer reading pick for president barack obama, bill gates, and mark zuckerberg from a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.” one hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited earth. yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. what happened to the others? and what may happen to us? most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but dr. yuval noah harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. from examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.dr. harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of jared diamond, james gleick, matt ridley, robert wright, and sharon moalem.
Reviews:
Sapiens is an insightful, history-laden explanation of how and why we humans organize ourselves the way we do. At the same time, it's a readable story of human history. Harari is an apt guide who doesn't preach, but lays out for us how we may have come by some of our inner workings. At a time when the future looks opaque, an unflinching look at our past can do wonders. I read all three Harari books this past summer, but found Sapiens to be the most compelling and important work of the three. A book that will change your mind, if you're open to it.jwregularguy
The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. Some chapters are a bit of a stretch, though when someone tries to summarize the course of 70,000 years of human history into 416 pages, one can hardly complain. I have given an extra star for BookishSanta team who have provided the book in original (color edition) form with a nice touch of handwritten note.Utkarsh Y.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and had me gripped from page one. The author puts things into perspective – drawing analogies and parallels – that is shocking , surprising and even funny. I felt a number of emotions reading this, from ignorance, astonishing intellect, shock, horror, surprise, anger, sadness, hunger? I highly recommend for anyone looking for a easy, albeit enlightening read about the development of human, society and life as we know it.Gene

9. The Physics Of Everyday Things: The Extraordinary Science Behind An Ordinary Day [Book]

Product Details:
Physics professor, bestselling author, and dynamic storyteller james kakalios reveals the mind-bending science behind the seemingly basic things that keep our daily lives running, from our smart phones and digital “clouds” to x-ray machines and hybrid vehicles. most of us are clueless when it comes to the physics that makes our modern world so convenient. what’s the simple science behind motion sensors, touch screens, and toasters? breaking down the world of things into a single day, kakalios engages our curiosity about how our refrigerators keep food cool, how a plane manages to remain airborne, and how our wrist fitness monitors keep track of our steps. each explanation is coupled with a story revealing the interplay of the astonishing invisible forces that surround us. through this “narrative physics,” the physics of everyday things demonstrates that—far from the abstractions conjured by terms like the higgs boson, black holes, and gravity waves—sophisticated science is also quite practical. with his signature clarity and inventiveness, kakalios ignites our imaginations and enthralls us with the principles that make up our lives.

13. Science Ideated: The Fall Of Matter And The Contours Of The Next Mainstream Scientific Worldview [Book]

Product Details:
Leading-edge empirical observations are increasingly difficult to reconcile with 'scientific' materialism. laboratory results in quantum mechanics, for instance, strongly indicate that there is no autonomous world of tables and chairs out there. coupled with the inability of materialist neuroscience to explain consciousness, this is forcing both science and philosophy to contemplate alternative worldviews. analytic idealism the notion that reality, while equally amenable to scientific inquiry, is fundamentally mental is a leading contender to replace 'scientific' materialism. in this book, the broad body of empirical evidence and reasoning in favor of analytic idealism is reviewed in an accessible manner. the book brings together a number of highly influential essays previously published by major media outlets such as scientific american and the institute of art and ideas. the essays have been revised and improved, while two neverbeforepublished essays have been added. the resulting argument anticipates a historically imminent transition to a scientific worldview that, while elegantly accommodating all known empirical evidence and predictive models, regards mind not matter as the ground of all reality.
Reviews:
In Science Ideated, Bernardo Kastrup is pointing to a kind of major shift in our culture's worldview as dramatic in implication as the overturning of the belief in a flat earth. I was thrilled to come across it. Kastrup maintains, and argues from scientific eminence (his credentials are impeccable) that "consciousness" rather than "matter" is the cornerstone of life. Put simply, the "out there" (tables and chairs) is really "in here", and the seemingly "out there" is just a modulation of consciousness. This is in stark contrast to the current mainstream view which effectively strives, pretty unsuccessfully, to solve the "hard problem of consciousness" by materialistic analysis of the brain. As Kastrup points out, "there is nothing about … the way particles are arranged in a brain, in terms of which one could deduce what the warmth of fire, the taste of an apple or the bitterness of disappointment feels like."Leon
14. Immune: A Journey Into The Mysterious System That Keeps You Alive [Book]

Product Details:
New york times bestseller – a gorgeously illustrated deep dive into the immune system that will forever change how you think about your body, from the creator of the popular science you – tube channel kurzgesagt—in a nutshell “through wonderful analogies and a genius for clarifying complex ideas, immune is a truly brilliant introduction to the human body’s vast system for fighting infections and other threats.”—john green, #1 new york times bestselling author of the fault in our stars – you wake up and feel a tickle in your throat. your head hurts. you’re mildly annoyed as you get the kids ready for school and dress for work yourself. meanwhile, an epic war is being fought, just below your skin. millions are fighting and dying for you to be able to complain as you head out the door. but most of us never really stop to ask: what even is our immune system? second only to the human brain in its complexity, it is one of the oldest and most critical facets of life on earth. without it, you would die within days. in immune, philipp dettmer, the brains behind the most popular science channel on you – tube, takes readers on a journey through the fortress of the human body and its defenses. there is a constant battle of staggering scale raging within us, full of stories of invasion, strategy, defeat, and noble self-sacrifice. in fact, in the time you’ve been reading this, your immune system has probably identified and eradicated a cancer cell that started to grow in your body. – each chapter delves into an element of the immune system, including defenses like antibodies and inflammation as well as threats like bacteria, allergies, and cancer, as dettmer reveals why boosting your immune system is actually nonsense, how parasites sneak their way past your body’s defenses, how viruses work, and what goes on in your wounds when you cut yourself. – enlivened by engaging full-color graphics and immersive descriptions, immune turns one of the most intricate, interconnected, and confusing subjects—immunology—into a gripping adventure through an astonishing alien landscape. immune is a vital and remarkably fun crash course in what is arguably, and increasingly, the most important system in the body.
Reviews:
Incredibly informative, well written, well presented, well illustrated. In classic Kurzgesagt style this breaks down insanely complex subject material and repackages it into a concise and easy to understand 330-ish page tome. I found this very easy to read and digest, and that is coming from an almost exclusive genre-fiction reader that finds non-fiction difficult most times.Peter
I am a slower reader and am only a couple of chapters in, but so far it's an informative well written book on a very complex topic. I work in the field but my knowledge is incomplete so was looking for something to fill those gaps. The language isn't too high level nor too basic, with analogies and anecdotes, which I love!! The pictures whilst cartoonish are very informative. I would recommend to anyone who has an interest in the immune system and it's functioning but does need a degree.Floss

This text is very engaging. The kids and I become very animated, as I try to explain, and the kids as they learn and try to understand. It's very hands on, and the kids love the experiments. Perfect. After a bad experience in prep last year, science has been saved in my son's eyes. Thank you.
After trying several approaches to teaching science a friend recommended REAL Science Odyssey. I have been extremely pleased with this program. We will finish the book next week. I have used it with three kids ages 9, 7, and 5. All have enjoyed the lessons and I look forward to science as well. The reading is concise and clear (not boring). The lessons progress in a logical format. The experiments are fun and do not require excessive purchases or preparation. They are just perfect for a busy homeschooling mom. We are anxious to begin Earth and Space in a few weeks!
Hello!
