Reviews:
Great book; taught me a few things and my 13 year old son appreciated having it as a source of answers to many questions teens have. It was especially good because it's by the AMA and it let kids feel that they are not the only ones going through the mood swings and the hormone changes and that it's normal. I believe that in itself made it totally worth the price. Good price by the way!Preshp2
this has been a great help for my sonALISON
I bought both this book and Scholastic's Boy's Body Guide for my little next door neighbors who were eight and ten at the time. They have enjoyed each of the books and continuously reference them while they make their parents and me laugh at their enthusiasm and belief that they are growing and changing overnight. I admire their curiosity and eagerness to learn. The books enable them to make interesting observations, make future plans, and ask good questions.topiary
5. Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations [Book]
Product Details:
A generation stands on the brink of a "rebelution."" most people don't expect you to understand what we're going to tell you in this book. and even if you understand, they don't expect you to care. and even if you care, they don't expect you to do anything about it. and even if you do something about it, they don't expect it to last. we do." alex and brettdo hard things is the harris twins' revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life. then they map out five powerful ways teens can respond for personal and social by teens for teens, do hard things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action.
Reviews:
As a parent of teenage twin boys and 20 -year teaching veteran, I first heard of this book from a high school student. After speaking to the newly inspired reader, I borrowed the book. The same night, I ordered two copies for home that will eventually land in my lending library. The writing is accessible and easily understandable. The difficult topic of how to motivate teens is effectively addressed. There is a religious message within the text, but it is not overwhelming or alienating for someone who doesn't feel as strongly or of the same faith. My teens resisted (imagine that) reading a nonfiction book — at first. Then, they started really reading the content. Fight over. My family of five is all reading the book; with only 2 copies, we have to share. There is no doubt we will finish and come away stronger: alone and together. Overall, a great read for teens, parents who want to understand and motivate them, and teachers who want to educate them.avian05
I first read this book at 13yrs old and reordered a dual signed copy for my friend who is getting married. One the first icebreakers to becoming good friends was the commonality of reading this book as teenagers. "Do hard things" is now a catch-phrase in my family anytime one of us even begins to become lazy. It's incredible how two teenage boys wrote a book that spurred on a belief into daily accountability from every member of my family almost 10yrs later.elijahsworker2012
Teaching our children that they are destined for more than mediocrity. I witness whole hardedly to the philosophy of this book. Will challenge the lack of spiritual maturity among teenagers & adults in our churches. Hopefully will encourage church leaders to challenge our teens with deeper spiritual teaching. My children finally found some young people they could relate to when they listened to this book. Most of the stories are teens doing "great things," but it is encouraged to start where you are and listen to God's leading in your life. Great listen for family.mobileschool

12. All American Boys [Book]
Product Details:
A 2016 coretta scott king author honor book, and recipient of the walter dean myers award for outstanding children’s literature. in this new york times bestselling novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.a bag of chips. that’s all sixteen-year-old rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. what he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, paul galluzzo, who mistakes rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to stay still as ordered. but how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? there were witnesses: quinn collins—a varsity basketball player and rashad’s classmate who has been raised by paul since his own father died in afghanistan—and a video camera. soon the beating is all over the news and paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. but then rashad is absent. and absent again. and again. and the basketball team—half of whom are rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. as does the school. and the town. simmering tensions threaten to explode as rashad and quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviewed tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of rashad and quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken directly from today’s headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.
Reviews:
Compelling. Mu skn loved it. He didn't put it down.MICHAEL
I for one believe that this book has a modern and well stated emphasis on today's society. When reading this book, I discovered that the dialect was much parallel to the spoken dialect of today. There was no dialect specifically dedicated to the book, but it was written as just as someone would be normally speaking. Therefore, it was in my opinion easier to comprehend the story. I also believe the story was just and satisfying. The main summary of the book was the story of a black teenager being arrested and brutally assaulted by a white police officer, for a crime in which the former had not even committed. From there we met characters like Quinn, who were caught in the crossfire of which side of the debate surrounding the assault to be on. To me, to see the experiences and feelings of people that have not only been victimized, but also forced to make hard decisions such as Quinn and others, made me see the real life issue this book is based off on, in a different light. It made me see all the issues of the people that are enveloped in this situation and question what my actions would be. As for such, I'd believe if such a book could allow me to open a new view of judgement, I personally advocate it for others to read as well.Centennial15
Rashad is a 16 yr old African-American boy who is accused of stealing at a local neighborhood convenience store. Before he can even explain what happened, he finds himself face down on the sidewalk being savagely beaten by a cop – a white cop. Quinn is a 16 yr old Caucasian boy who goes to school with Rashad and stumbles upon him being beaten by the cop – a cop who happens to be a close family friend. What follows is an exploration of race in America, community & family values, and what it means to truly be an ally. Tie-ins: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, police brutality, current events Disclaimer for teachers and librarians: there is a LOT of cursing in this book, including the F word, but it's mainly used as an adjective and not as a sexually explicit verb, if that matters in your school. And it is used very authentically (i.e. this IS how teenage boys talk to each other!).Marti

Reviews:
My son needed this for a school assignment and enjoyed it so much he recommended it to me, and read it again himself. A great read and covers areas applicable to teens. It was also quick to arrive and the price was great.RBJ22
I was given a copy of this title, free, en exchange for my honest opinion. his is another book that talks about a white police officer shooting a black male. But make no mistake, it is also a book that stands out on its own. You have probably already heard of this book, as it came out and took the world by storm. I am not one that ever feels that a book deserves a bunch of hype, but in this case I can understand it. It is good for so many reasons, but it is not a perfect book. (I have yet to find one that is.) Starr is at party in her neighborhood when shots are fired. Her old friend, Khalil is there with her and quickly gets her out and safely away. While heading to her house or her father's store, they are pulled over by a white officer for a busted headlight. While Starr is mentally reciting the lessons of how to behave when pulled over by the police, it is apparent that Khalil did not receive those lessons. As the police is making his way to the car, Starr does ask if there is any drugs in the car. What could have simply been a routine stop quickly escalates into a homicide. This is due to both Khalil's mouthiness and the officer's fear/prejudice/choice. **With the rising number of shootings, people -black people in particular- have been having conversations with their kids about what to do when you are pulled over by the police? Is it necessary? If you have taught your kids to be respectful of authority then no it's not. Because, regardless of your opinion of the police or your socio-economic circumstance the police are in a position of authority. EVEN IF YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG. I have been pulled over before and was told that I resembled a suspect that the police were looking for. No I didn't believe them, but I was still respectful. Sometimes, it's not about being right, it's about doing the right thing.** Starr then struggles with how to reconcile what has happened, with the way the world reacts and how the police handle the situation. "Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right." The real power of this book is that through all the devastation and heartache hope remains – it is such a poignant reflection of reality. Thomas does not hold back in any way, and she is demanding of her reader. Completely gripping, challenging, confronting, and incredibly painful at times, this is a book that demands to be read. Aside from this, Thomas is a truly spectacular writer. Her ability to completely immerse the reader (even one who has no real comprehension of life might be like in Garden Heights) is astounding. She writes with real feeling, moving between pain, grief and anger and humour, family dynamics, young love and the monotony of every day with ease. Her ability to inject humour at any moment is both wonderful and disarming.Hannah

The title of this book caught my eye and although I don't yet have a teenage boy I hoped to get a glimpse into the future and prepare myself. This book deals specifically with boys ages eleven to nineteen and covers a wide variety of topics. This book is aimed at helping mothers understand their teenage sons – why they act the way they do the pressures they face from peers and what they need (and don't need) from their parents. One very helpful aspect of this book was the scripture references included for dealing with specific situations. Most but not all of them were very appropriate to the situation and will allow teenagers (both boys and girls) to see what the Bible has to say on the topic at hand. For a few of the scripture references (in particular the section on competition and survival of the fittest") I didn't see quite as strong a connection as I wanted. I also thought the emails from teenage boys were eye-opening. I was aware of many of the temptations facing teenagers but the emails gave me more perspective on their struggles as they grow toward adulthood. Overall I feel like this book is worth reading to make mothers more aware of what your teenager may be facing (both struggles everyone knows about e.g. drugs and newer issues created because of today's technology) and to give you ideas on how to approach him in dealing with those issues. It also gave me a new perspective on how my role as a mother changes as my son gets older. "my3kids
What Your Son isn't telling you Michael Ross & Susie Shellenburger I have two very young boys age 3 and 6ÖI was interested in reviewing this book as a mother and a youth worker. Although I know there is nothing new under the sun I also acknowledge that our children face a myriad of things at younger ages. I was surprised at the scope of this book and it's readability. It deals with so many issues and offers great biblical wisdom and insight into effectively dealing with these issues and teaching our young men how to deal with them also. An excellent resource for any parent or youth worker. I truly appreciated the way the authors used true life experiences of youth age boys to show examples. A special thanks to the authors for their hard work and thoughtful application of the truth of the Word of God to all situations. An excellent resource I highly recommend it I know mine will be well used. Thank you Bethany House for this free review copy.
