1. Paradise [Book]

Product Details:
Paradise is at once the story of an african boy's coming of age, a tragic love story, and a tale of the corruption of traditional african patterns by european colonialism. it presents a major african voice to american readers – a voice that prompted peter tinniswood to write in the london times, reviewing gurnah's previous novel, "mr. gurnah is a very fine writer. i am certain he will become a great one." paradise is abdulrazak gurnah's great novel.at twelve, yusuf, the protagonist of this twentieth-century odyssey, is sold by his father in repayment of a debt. from the simple life of rural africa, yusuf is thrown into the complexities of precolonial urban east africa – a fascinating world in which muslim black africans, christian missionaries, and indians from the subcontinent coexist in a fragile, subtle social hierarchy.through the eyes of yusuf, gurnah depicts communities at war, trading safaris gone awry, and the universal trials of adolescence. then, just as yusuf begins to comprehend the choices required of him, he and everyone around him must adjust to the new reality of european colonialism.the result is a page-turning saga that covers the same territory as the novels of isak dinesen and william boyd, but does so from a perspective never before available on that seldom-chronicled part of the world.

2. Critical Perspectives On Abdulrazak Gurnah [Book]

Product Details:
This edited volume provides a wide- ranging introduction to the novelistic oeuvre of the prize- winning author abdulrazak gurnah. it addresses a gap in gurnah scholarship by including chapters which discuss his earlier works that have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. drawing on a range of critical lenses including postcolonial theory, indian ocean studies, psychoanalytic theory, migration studies and gender studies, this book provides illuminating commentary on his novels. attentive to the geographical and historical reach of the narratives, the chapters engage with recurring thematic concerns of departures and arrivals; of complex family relationships; and of precarious cosmopolitan hospitality in situations of changing power relations from the old indian ocean monsoon trading system to colonial and postcolonial contexts. the volume concludes with an author interview. it will be of great interest to researchers in the fields of literary and cultural studies, especially postcolonial literature, african studies and indian ocean studies. the chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of english studies in africa.

3. Provisions For The Seekers: A Manual Of Prophetic Ḥadīths With Commentary [Book]

Product Details:
Imam nawawi wrote: the science of hadith is the noblest means of attaining closeness to the lord of the worlds muhammad, the messenger of god (upon him be peace) was given exceptional oratorical skills. his words were eloquent, comprehensive, and simple, conveying libraries of wisdoms and truths. the messenger (upon him be peace) himself said, i have been sent with the jawami al-kalim (bukhari) that is, pithy language that expresses a multitude of meanings in few words. bookstores and libraries today are full of books of proverbs, coined by historical personages and political and religious leaders. but each of these pales in comparison to the eloquence of the messenger of god (upon him be peace) and philosophers and sages seem nothing more than struggling students in the light of his divinely inspired wisdom. this book is a collection of 327 hadiths which the author, shaykh 'ashiq ilahi al-bulandshehri, compiled from 'allama tabrizi s renowned hadith compilation, mishkat al-masabih. the book contains many jawami' al-kalim, as well as prophecies and other accounts and narratives. the book is ultimately a compilation of hadiths meant to inspire the souls of today s muslims and give them a glimpse at the charisma of the prophet muhammad (upon him be peace) and a roadmap with which they can achieve closeness to their lord. this work is taught in many of the madrasas around the world as a first hadith work. now it is available in this beautifully bound english edition with a commentary from the classical sources.

This is an amazing book. It names the Hadith in Arabic, gives the English translation and a short explanation. These Ahadith are precious jewels from the Prophet SAW that can easily be applied to modern life anywhere in the world. The end chapters are beautiful, inspiring backstories. This book teaches the reader great morals which the world is severely lacking. Definitely recommend to everyone.ashf92
4. Tamerlane: Sword Of Islam, Conqueror Of The World [Book]

Product Details:
A powerful account of the life of tamerlane the great (1336-1405), the last master nomadic power, one of history's most extreme tyrants ever, and the subject of marlowe's play. marozzi travelled in the footsteps of the great mogul emperor of samarkland to write this wonderful combination of history and travelogue. the name of the last great warlord conjures up images of mystery and romance: medieval warfare on desert plains; the clash of swords on snow-clad mountains; the charge of elephants across the steppes of asia; the legendary opulence and cruelty of the illiterate, chess-playing nemesis of asia. he ranks alongside alexander as one of the world's great conquerors, yet the details of his life are scarcely known in the west. he was not born to a distinguished family, nor did he find his apprenticeship easy – at one point his mobile army consisted only of himself, his wife, seven companions and four horses – but his dominion grew with astonishing rapidity. in the last two decades of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth, he blazed through asia. sometimes enemies were buried alive – more commonly they were decapitated. on the ruins of baghdad, tamerlane had his princes erect a pyramid of 90,000 heads. during his lifetime he sought to foster a personal myth, exaggerating the difficulties of his youth, laying claim to supernatural powers and a connection to genghis khan. this myth was maintained after his death in legend, folklore, poetry, drama and even opera, nowhere more powerfully than in marlowe's play – he is now as much a literary construct as a historical figure. justin marozzi follows in his path and evokes his legacy in telling the tale of this fabulously cruel, magnificent and romantic warrior.

11. The Walking Qurʼan: Islamic Education, Embodied Knowledge, And History In West Africa [Book]

Product Details:
"typesetter: code used below spanning a thousand years of history–and bringing the story to the present through ethnographic fieldwork in senegal, gambia, and mauritania–rudolph ware documents the profound significance of quran schools for west african muslim communities. such schools peacefully brought islam to much of the region, becoming striking symbols of muslim identity. ware shows how in senegambia the schools became powerful channels for african resistance during the eras of the slave trade and colonization. while illuminating the past, ware also makes signal contributions to understanding contemporary islam by demonstrating how the schools' epistemology of embodiment gives expression to classical islamic frameworks of learning and knowledge. today, many muslims and non-muslims find west african methods of quran schooling puzzling and controversial. in fascinating detail, ware introduces these practices from the viewpoint of the practitioners, explicating their emphasis on educating the whole human being as if to remake it as a living replica of the quran. from this perspective, the transference of knowledge in core texts and rituals is literally embodied in people, helping shape them–like the prophet of islam–into vital bearers of the word of god. 12. The Only Good Indians: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
A new york times bestseller from usa today bestselling author stephen graham jones comes a “masterpiece” (locus magazine) of a novel about revenge, cultural identity, and the cost of breaking from tradition. labeled “one of 2020’s buzziest horror novels” (entertainment weekly), this is a remarkable horror story that “will give you nightmares—the good kind of course” (buzzfeed). from new york times bestselling author stephen graham jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the american indian experience. fans of jordan peele and tommy orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four american indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a violent, vengeful way.
Reviews:
The Only Good Indians, authored by Stephen Graham Jones, was a birthday buy for myself. It was released on my actual birthday, along with Wonderland by Zoje Stage, so I was feeling pretty chuffed with myself; both hardcover editions had hauntingly lovely covers. I rated this 5 stars. By the end of the opening chapter I felt as if a great clock had begun ticking down, to what I did not know; but it didnt look good for those involved. There were many points while reading, Ill admit I was doing some sniffling, had to widen my eyes a bit to stop the waterworks from getting started, or as a last line of defense, looking up from the page to stare at the wall or Biscuit (my cat). I had to give up the ghost by the end, give in to a little emotional break, fully; akin to lancing a deep hurt, I was left feeling lighter but weary. Mapping the Interior was my introduction to SGJ, a novella that wasted no words in wringing out everything, leaving me gutted and a fan for life. This novel is a heavy hitter in the same way, showcasing the human bonds that we forge that can last us a lifetime, shining a light on the indigenous people that are always further and further swept into tighter corners of a land that used to be open, beautifully wild, and theirs; but now often burning or drowning. I have watched or read horror from single digits; Hitchcock, Poe, then Lovecraft and some King were my introductions via my dads library and blessing. I adopted a quirk for keeping myself from getting too scared while diving into my horrors, it couldnt happen to me because Im not breaking whatever rule the poor characters in question were breaking. Example, I did not allow myself to enter the house of redneck cannibals of my own volition, ending in my murder. That doesnt really hold up with SGJ. Innocents are just as liable to be struck down, if not more so, before the guilty. And then this even harder one, what if there are no seriously guilty ones being punished, no tremendous enemies to hate on? Four friends make a memory. There are parts that all of them share equally, they could agree easily Thats the way it happened. But one made a secret pact, a private promise; he sealed the fate of his friends as well as his own, and even past that, to those attached by association or circumstance. So many lives were held accountable to one mans promise, and I still got to the end and cant say where there is an enemy. Thats the thing that tore me up, that SGJ wrote in a way that hit me right between the eyes like a freaking brick; the debt has to paid, sorry isnt enough, and I can mourn both sides. There are many elements present in this novel, this is one that made the book that touch more horrific to me, kept my mind from resting, gave my pulse that little drop and catch, and coupled with that ending, led to my liberating, messy and over the top cry fest at the end. 10/10 am going to do it again.DedDuckie
In my opinion, The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones falls under the slow burn style of horror fiction. I can see how this author has been compared to filmmaker Jordan Peele and author Paul Tremblay (and if you haven't read Paul Tremblay, then you should – especially Cabin at the End of the World). Anyhoo… Jones takes a bad decision made by four childhood friends and turns it into a creeping tale of revenge. The setting, an Indian reservation and the surrounding areas, is unique, the "big bad" is definitely creepy, the writing style is detailed and the characters are well developed. This is absolutely a one-of-a-kind horror story.thewellreadpug
The Only Good Indians is a well written and superbly crafted horror story which takes place in the northwestern US and has characters from the Blackfeet and Crow tribes. Four young Blackfeet men embark on a badly planned and illegal elk hunt which results in a violation of tribal values and the desecration of nature. Ten years later, an entity exacts her revenge in a chilling, suspenseful and brutal fashion. The characters are incredibly well developed given the length of the novel, and the reader develops sympathy for them. The reader also empathizes with the perspective of the entity who pursues the four men. This story has great depth in its exploration of themes of cultural identity, tradition, social justice, revenge and respect for the natural world. Horror readers will love this, but I would also recommend this book for readers of fiction in general. I can see why this The Only Good Indians is receiving so much critical acclaim.lurkykitty
13. Desertion: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
Writing at the peak of his powers, abdulrazak gurnah gives us in desertion a spellbinding novel of forbidden love and cultural upheaval, with consequences powerfully reverberating through three generations and across continents—from the heyday of the british empire to the aftermath of african independence.early one morning in 1899, in a small, dilapidated town along the coast of mombassa, a muslim man, hassanali, sets out for a mosque but doesn’t get there. out of the desert stumbles an englishman who collapses at hassanali’s feet: martin pearce—writer, traveler, something of an orientalist. hassanali cares for pearce until the englishman is taken to the home of colonial officer frederick turner to recuperate. when pearce returns to thank his good samaritan, he meets and is enraptured by rehana, hassanali’s sister—by her gorgeous eyes and tragic aura. and so begins the passionate, illicit love affair—two lives and cultures colliding—that informs the rich, finely woven tapestry of desertion.gurnah, who has been short-listed for the booker prize, deftly and dramatically evokes the personal and political scandals of empire, the weight of tradition—of religion and culture—in everyday lives, the role of women in muslim society, the vicissitudes of love, the complexities of filial relationships, the inexorability of miscegenation, and the power of fiction to charm and to harm. desertion is a highly achieved, riveting work of imagination, brimming with controlled figural inventiveness, psychological acuity, and moral complexity.

17. Born A Crime: Stories From A South African Childhood [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller * the compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime story of one man's coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed named one of the best books of the year by michiko kakutani, new york times * newsday * esquire * npr * booklist trevor noah's unlikely path from apartheid south africa to the desk of the daily show began with a criminal act: his birth. trevor was born to a white swiss father and a black xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. living proof of his parents' indiscretion, trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. finally liberated by the end of south africa's tyrannical white rule, trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle. born a crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. it is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother–his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. the stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. his stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love. praise for born a crime "[a] compelling new memoir . . . by turns alarming, sad and funny, [trevor noah's] book provides a harrowing look, through the prism of mr. noah's family, at life in south africa under apartheid. . . . born a crime is not just an unnerving account of growing up in south africa under apartheid, but a love letter to the author's remarkable mother."–michiko kakutani, the new york times "[an] unforgettable memoir."–parade "what makes born a crime such a soul-nourishing pleasure, even with all its darker edges and perilous turns, is reading noah recount in brisk, warmly conversational prose how he learned to negotiate his way through the bullying and ostracism. . . . what also helped was having a mother like patricia nombuyiselo noah. . . . consider born a crime another such gift to her–and an enormous gift to the rest of us."–usa today "[noah] thrives with the help of his astonishingly fearless mother. . . . their fierce bond makes this story soar."–people "[noah's] electrifying memoir sparkles with funny stories . . . and his candid and compassionate essays deepen our perception of the complexities of race, gender, and class."–booklist (starred review) "a gritty memoir . . . studded with insight and provocative social criticism . . . with flashes of brilliant storytelling and acute observations."–kirkus reviews

Reviews:
Absolutely awesome read. I am not a fan of autobiographies, and yet this one was delicious! I fed my mind, heart, and soul. I was expecting to hear about how he was a jokester growing up or of something…who knows. I just know I was not expecting this…this book tells of his upbringing as a colored South African with a mother who set the foundation under which he currently functions. There is telling of his hunger to survive at all stages of life in a way that is very reminiscent of American children today. Definitely worth every bit of my time. Glad I picked it up!Abronxgirltoldme
The first half of the book made me laugh out loud. I have seen a lot of Trevor Noah’s daily show updates and those are just as hilarious so when I was reading this book, I could literally hear his voice. Trevor has a gift to have humor about the tragedies he and his family faced. How our system betrays certain groups of people. It’s great to see how he understands so deeply the right and wrong in what he did in his past whether as a kid or as an adult. I learned a great deal about South African history through this book. The ridiculous hunger of power by suppressing other people can still be seen in some parts of the world. We read all these stories about war, nazis, apartheid, slavery but do we actually learn anything? Do we stop discriminating against other people? Why don’t we respect every human being that came into this world, just like we did? Domestic violence is still a major concern and police in many male dominating countries take it the same way it’s shown in this book. They don’t file a complaint and it gives the edge and the power to such men to repeat their horrific actions without any consequences till they eventually beat the woman to death. I wish in this century, we can all start respecting women and start taking crimes like rapes and domestic violence seriously all over the world. I loved this book and the writing style. I hope more and more people read it.p.a
A book made up.of short chapters each a self contained episode of the author's very colourful.life. An easy read, vibrant and lively. One of our bookclub did wonder how such could be fitted into 19 years…? But an enjoyable, interesting read, giving great insight into life in South Africa as a mixed race kid, only a few years ago…MrsDent
