A good general world history, that focuses strongly on the development of world civilisations and societies, from a broad perspective, and on their underlying influences. It's a great book if you want a broad overview of ancient societies and important developments in the history of mankind. The book is divided into three parts: from dawn to the spread of the main religions (Christianity, Buddhism and Islam), the conquest of the planet during Middle Age, reformation, and European scientific revolution and finally, the third stage starting with the American Revolution until today. The first two parts make up the bulk of the book, which makes sense, as that covers the bulk of human history. However, I was disappointed at how little coverage there was of the last century– WWI and WWII were breezed over in just a chapter. I bought this book to read to prepare for an exam where I'd be tested on both pre-modern and modern history, and I thought this book would be a great study tool. It was really helpful in refreshing my memory about the pre-modern part, but it was no help at all in preparing for the modern-history part of the exam. Obviously in fitting the history of the world into a book of this size, some sacrifices had to be made. Some of the major political upheavals of history are merely skimmed over. Barely mentioned are the first Persian empire, the conquests of Alexander, the Crusades, the Hundred Years War, the Thirty Years War. Instead, we get a gradually evolving look at the way life was lived: the crops, the farming techniques, the inventions, the technology, the philosophies and religions. Also, Blainey has gone to considerable trouble to bring in areas of the world often missing from such a "global" history: New Zealand, Australia, Africa, China, Japan, and Indonesia. One problem is that this God's-eye view leaves out almost all the detail connecting us to particular times and places, although Blainey takes care to come down to earth periodically and talk about actual events and people. Still, if you're interested in learning specifics about famous people, events, or cultures from history, this book won't be for you. Also, the writing style gets tedious after a while– I like histories that are told like a compelling story, but this isn't that type of book. It was readable enough though.

The Story of the World is a wonderful history curriculum and I love the audio book option. I actually use it in conjunction with Layers of Learning. It gives me a break and the kids can listen to it while they color or do other arts and crafts. We also listen to it in the car on longer drives. They really enjoy it.Elizabeth
I never enjoyed learning history as a child, especially ancient history. This audio collection has changed my perspective. My kids beg to listen to it every time we are in the car. I have the original hard back issue of this book. The original was of a larger format and the paper used in it was of a thicker and better quality. The colour plates were very well detailed. The quality of the original publication was excellent and because of this the reading experience was very enjoyable. By comparison this paperback version is very poor. So poor in fact that it detracts from the enjoyment and experience of reading. It is a standard paperback size. It is sad as I bought this for a gift for a friend but I do not feel able to give it such is the quality of printing materials and format used. In reading this paperback I suppose it would be comparable to watching a film produced for cinema on a mobile phone. The information has not changed but presentation is key. Books should be beautiful things to value.nichclar0

The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. Some chapters are a bit of a stretch, though when someone tries to summarize the course of 70,000 years of human history into 416 pages, one can hardly complain. I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and had me gripped from page one. The author puts things into perspective – drawing analogies and parallels – that is shocking , surprising and even funny. Well, this book was a nice surprise! Whenever you want to learn about something you think you don't know anything about, it's sometimes good to start with a children's book on the subject. I had never heard of a world history text for youngsters of elementary age before. I sent a copy (not found on eBay) to my young grandchildren. But before I sent it, I looked at it myself. The narration was simple and reader-friendly without being wimpy – and I found myself learning things about world history that I vaguely had heard of but never really had a handle on! Wasn't I supposed to have learned this stuff long ago in school? Maybe I wasn't taught it – or maybe I didn't care to learn it. It might have been both. I became so interested in the basics of world history that I bought a copy on eBay for myself. It's a little like learning to read – you discover things that were only hints in your brain before. The writing is very clear and elementary-level reader-friendly. It was written by V. M. Hillyer, the guiding light of the Calvert School of Maryland, whose home education system was one of the first homeschooling systems in the country. This book was written long ago and apparently updated in several aspects, and some people would think it's old-fashioned; I think it'sfine. The lesson? Old dogs can learn new tricks! I have a very sensitive 1st grader who read this with me. It was by far his favorite subject, and the writing style certainly is engaging, however, there were some parts that made him cry. Yes, it's history and reality and I don't want to shield him from that, but, be aware that there is a lot of death in this book. Your child may not be ready for all the gruesome tales of cyclops, or Julius Ceasar's murder, etc. If your child is sensitive, then you may want to wait a year or two to do this series or plan to preview what parts you might want to skip/soften.User
Lots of people had written raves about this book. It is ok, but because it covers history from different parts of the world it seems to jump all over the place. It does each time period from different parts of the world and then goes around again for the next time period. I think younger kids would not be understanding it well unless you made a timeline to go with it. I felt that if you didn't have some sort of history understanding you wouldn't be able to piece it together. For this reason I think kids need to be older to get the most out of it. I have a very sensitive 1st grader who read this with me. It was by far his favorite subject, and the writing style certainly is engaging, however, there were some parts that made him cry. Yes, it's history and reality and I don't want to shield him from that, but, be aware that there is a lot of death in this book. Your child may not be ready for all the gruesome tales of cyclops, or Julius Ceasar's murder, etc. If your child is sensitive, then you may want to wait a year or two to do this series or plan to preview what parts you might want to skip/soften.User
Lots of people had written raves about this book. It is ok, but because it covers history from different parts of the world it seems to jump all over the place. It does each time period from different parts of the world and then goes around again for the next time period. I think younger kids would not be understanding it well unless you made a timeline to go with it. I felt that if you didn't have some sort of history understanding you wouldn't be able to piece it together. For this reason I think kids need to be older to get the most out of it. I couldn't stop reading his previous book Sapiens, and was super keen on both Deus and the 21 Lessons books. Deus is still mostly about the past, and only the last quarter of the book touches on the future. There's still some great insights, but more could have been done with the discussion on AI, nanotechnology, and whether humans are upgraded or replaced. Less on the past and more on the future would have scored 5 stars.David L
Interesting view of the future, oversimplified in places. It provides one view of the future that is quite compelling and worth reading about. IMHO, it overstates the probability of transition from task specific AI to generalised AI. It also completely overlooks the role of complexity and emergence in the way it describes living organisms and organic brains as merely algorithms.
The subject matter is very important for an understanding of our past and future. His revision of the more traditional parameters for describing the past of homo sapiens is thought provoking, but he does not seek the false status of an "authority". He writes clearly and with sufficient detail but without swamping the reader with indigestible facts. The reader is able to move on their thinking, but will definitely keep the volumes for regular future reference,sbgarton2012
