1. Relativity: A Very Short Introduction [Book]

Product Details:
If you move at high speed, time slows down, space squashes up and you get heavier. travel fast enough and you could weigh as much as a jumbo jet, be flattened thinner than a cd without feeling a thing-and live forever! as for the angles of a triangle, they do not always have to add up to 180 degrees. and then, of course, there are black holes. these are but a few of the extraordinary consequences of einstein's theory of relativity. it is now over a hundred years since he made these discoveries, and yet the general public is still largely unaware of them. filled with illuminating anecdotes and fascinating accounts of experiments, this book aims to introduce the interested lay person to the subject of relativity in a way which is accessible and engaging and at the same time scientifically rigorous. with relatively few mathematical equations–nothing more complicated than the pythagoras's theorem–this vsi packs a lot time into very little space, and for anyone who has feltintimidated by einstein's groundbreaking theory, it offers the perfect place to start. about the series: combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, very short introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to freud, quantum theory to islam.
Reviews:
I could not possibly get it fully, but there were lots of examples that made the theory more understandable and the author did his best to try to explain it.Mr. T. C.

The philosophy of friedrich nietzsche (1844-1900) was almost wholly neglected during his sane life, which came to an abrupt end in 1889. since then he has been appropriated as an icon by an astonishingly diverse spectrum of people, whose interpretations of his thought range from the highly irrational to the firmly analytical. thus spoke zarathustra introduced the 'superman' and the twilight of the idols developed the 'will to power' concept; these term, together with 'sklavenmoral' and 'herrenmoral', became confused with the rise of nationalism in germany. idiosyncratic and aphoristic, nietzsche is always bracing and provocative, and temptingly easy to dip into. michael tanner's readable introduction to the philosopher's life and work examines the numerous ambiguities inherent in his writings. it also explodes the many misconceptions fostered in the hundred years since nietzsche wrote, prophetically: 'do not, above all, confound me with what i am not!' about the series: the very short introductions series from oxford university press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. these pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

9. Socrates: A Very Short Introduction [Book]

Product Details:
Socrates has a unique position in the history of philosophy; it is no exaggeration to say that had it not been for his influence on plato, the whole development of western philosophy might have been unimaginably different. yet socrates wrote nothing himself, and our knowledge of him is derived primarily from the engaging and infuriating figure who appears in plato's dialogues. in this very short introduction, christopher taylor explores the life of socrates and his philosophical activity, before looking to the responses his philosophical doctrines have evoked in the centuries since his betrayal and execution at fellow athenian hands. examining the relationship between the historical socrates and the platonic character, taylor considers the complex question of how far it is possible to distinguish the philosopher's own thought from that of those others who wrote about him, and explores the enduring image of socrates as the ideal exemplar of the philosophic life – a thinker whose moral and intellectual integrity permeated every detail of his life. this new edition also includes a new chapter analysing the reception and influence of socrates in 19th and 20th century philosophical thought. about the series: the very short introductions series from oxford university press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. these pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

12. An Introduction To Rights [Book]

Product Details:
An introduction to rights is an accessible and readable introduction to the history, logic, moral implications, and political tendencies of the idea of rights. it is organized chronologically and discusses important historical events such as the french revolution and the abolition of slavery in the american south. it deals with historical figures, including grotius, paley, hobbes, locke, bentham, burke, godwin, douglass, and mill, and covers contemporary debates, including consequentialism versus contractualism. hohfeld's notoriously slippery distinctions among rights are lucidly explained by the use of examples. rights come in various types – human, moral, civil, political, and legal – and claims about who has a right, and to what, are often contested. what are rights? are they timeless and universal, or merely conventional? how are they related to other morally significant values, such as well-being, autonomy, and community? can animals have rights? can fetuses? edmundson addresses these issues from both philosophical and legal perspectives. as an undergraduate text, an introduction to rights is well-suited to introductions to political philosophy, moral philosophy, and ethics. it may also be used in courses on political theory in departments of political science and government and in courses on legal theory in law schools. book jacket.

Reviews:
This book was referred to me by a friend. We have similar taste in books. I had a really hard time rating this. I went back and forth over and over whether it should be a three or four. I had to go with three because there were just too many issues….although it's very addicting. I'm sure I'll read every book in the series just to find out what happens. If I don't I'll probably go crazy from not knowing. I definitely could relate to Sang in the beginning. I was rather awkward in my opinion as a teenager. I still to this day am completely oblivious to flirting. I stopped relating when all of the sudden she had these gorgeous talented all different walks of guys with these skills fawning all over her. I'm not exaggerating either. There were like 9 of them! They were overly protective. One actually washed and styled her hair after meeting her. They even bought her a cell phone to keep in contact so her crazy family wouldn't find out. (That's a whole other can of worms.) It's like where were all those hot caring too good to be true guys when I was an awkward new girl in high school with controlling parents? Where was my pink cell phone? lol Alright there is some serious child abuse going on in her household. It confused me that all of the guys were very protective right from the start with Sang over the tiniest things like tripping or falling but when they hear her mother made her chug lemon juice and vinegar as a punishment for a male caller they allow her to go home and don't report anything? Unbelievable. Okay now onto the guys. At first my initial observation was a cult….apparently that's not it. There's a leader. They know where everyone is at all times. Apparently there is some training. As we know they are sent from the Academy to attend a rather dangerous and low funded public school to try to set an example. I wondering if their FBI? Or undercover cops? I've even thought they were werewolves in some pack but maybe I've been reading too much paranormal books lately. So at the end of the book I didn't really get any answers that I wanted. I guess that is what keeps readers hooked. Now I have to know what the academy is and who Sang chooses out of the many eligible bachelors that are obsessed with her. My emotions reading this were so confusing because I was so annoyed with the too good to be true things that happened but at the same time addicted to the story. Let's hope I'll get more answers with the next book because I know I'm going to break down and buy them all. For more reviews…check out my blog! ) thelatenightlamp.blogspot.comthelatenightlamp

This is an excellent starting point if you are researching or giving practical use of the contents. Scott Cunningham has written this very well and is a very smooth read. Very good book indeed.garseymo
Definitely great for begginers or anyone interested in Wicca/Magick. Easy to read and understand. It has all the information you could need on Magick. I see why so many witches recommend it.Sam the egg
This is easily the one of the best books I've read. It has lots of useful information for someone who is serious about becoming a Wiccan. As the title would suggest it's a great guide for people looking into becoming solitary practicioners in the religion, which is nice to have a book available for people who are unable or don't desire joining a Wiccan covern. It goes into the beleifs and practices in fine detail and is really easy to understand. A great book indeed.Dale

Reviews:
I was in a dark place with issues in dealing with not having emotions or if I did, not been able to express or cope with them. Life was not a joyful place and I felt lost, not being able see that life can be enjoyable. This book dealt with the authors experience in German concentration Camps, and how people dealt with it differently. Those who never gave up hope and imagined themselves going back to their home and life, survived. Those who couldn't see a future did not survive. I have read it numerous times and learn something new each time.Frogs
Most of the time when we learn about the Jews in death camps its all these the physical and brutal descriptions of the horrors, the wounds, the starvation, the endless piles of corpses, but this book takes a more psychological approach and explains how exactly the Nazis broke and dehumanized the Jews into complete nonentities, into something lesser than livestock. Fankl however on top of this gives one of the most life firming stories, its all about transforming suffering, and living life.Cougar
This book is life-changing, at the very least it's undoubtedly shifted my perspective on life and suffering. Dr Frankl writes about his time spent in concentration camps and his founding of logotherapy. Frequently quoting Nietzsche, especially "He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how", Frankl goes on to suggest the need or search for meaning in our lives is of the most paramount importance, and a crucial part of maintaining good mental health. Frankly explains suffering is an inevitable part of our lives, and that regardless of the burden placed upon us, we all have the choice to accept our suffering or succumb to it. Whether we're being a role model for others who experience the same circumstances, or use our suffering as a means to improve ourselves in different aspects of our lives, we can all find a meaning in our suffering and through finding meaning we can overcome anything. There are quite a few concepts I learned about in this book such as paradoxical intention, the importance of meaning in our lives, as well as enduring and using our suffering for a greater good. I read this at a time when I really needed it, and this book has been a catalyst for positive change in my life.Dane

18. Logic: A Very Short Introduction [Book]

Product Details:
Logic is often perceived as having little to do with the rest of philosophy, and even less to do with real life. in this lively and accessible introduction, graham priest shows how wrong this conception is. he explores the philosophical roots of the subject, explaining how modern formal logic deals with issues ranging from the existence of god and the reality of time to paradoxes of probability and decision theory. along the way, the basics of formal logic are explained in simple, non-technical terms, showing that logic is a powerful and exciting part of modern philosophy. in this new edition graham priest expands his discussion to cover the subjects of algorithms and axioms, and proofs in mathematics. about the series: the very short introductions series from oxford university press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. these pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Reviews:
Started reading it with some enthusiasm but that waned. It is no doubt about logic but I thought it would explain theoretical and practical approaches considering issues in 'logical' manner. The first part of the book seems a rather tortuous analysis of understanding logic in a narrative expression of a situation. Perhaps this is harsh given I haven't made much headway but it wasn't an inviting start.Arfie

20. The Brothers Karamazov: Introduction By Malcolm Jones [Book]
Product Details:
The brothers karamazov, dostoevsky's last and greatest novel, published just before his death in 1881, chronicles the bitter love-hate struggle between the outsized fyodor karamazov and his three very different sons. it is above all the story of a murder, told with hair-raising intellectual clarity and a feeling for the human condition unsurpassed in world literature.dostoevsky's towering reputation as one of the handful of thinkers who forged the modern sensibility has sometimes obscured the purely novelistic virtues–brilliant characterizations, flair for suspense and melodrama, instinctive theatricality–that made his work so immensely popular in nineteenth-century russia. this award-winning translation by richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky–the definitive version in english–magnificently captures the rich and subtle energies of dostoevsky's masterpiece.( book jacket status: jacketed)
