The story of the struggle for success in Hollywood, particularly that of a reluctant child and an obsessed stage mother is well-worn territory. So what made this worth reading? Ms. McCurdy spent several years as a Nickleodean star in the early 2000s, even dabbling in a recording career. What makes this so compelling is her ability and willingness to share painful and unique details of her life, as well as that of her families' struggles, and how she was manipulated by her Mother and other adults at the network. She draws you in with a competing conversational style, and doesn't hold back on anything. By the end of the book, the reader is left feeling both moved and pleased with her decisions and intelligence in deciding to move beyond the grief left behind by her experiences. I was drawn from page to page and finished it in one sitting. I'll probably reread it more slowly, to be able to contemplate her unsparing exposition of the path she took to reach this point in her life. I wish her well. Buy it!fisheye

This book is a little different twist for Lisa Wingate. She has taken actual events, the adoption scandal of The Tennessee Children's Home Society that was exposed in 1950, and has woven an engrossing account of lives changed. A large family living on a houseboat on the Mississippi River finds themselves in a desperate situation one dark and stormy night. The father must take the mother, in the midst of a life-threatening childbirth, to the hospital leaving the five children on the boat. Operatives for the predatory orphanage grab the children and propel them into a terrifying situation. Big sister Rill tries desperately to protect her siblings and keep them together through it all. It is told in two different voices in two different times, but unlike some books that doesn't prove a distraction. It is very easy to keep it all straight, and it adds to the suspense by taking you up to a point and then pulling you back to a different aspect of the story. The characters are well developed, and you are allowed to peel back the layers slowly to get the big picture. As Rill's story unfolds, you are held spellbound by the unrelenting sadness of her situation, and horrified by the fact that these things really happened to some children. Wingate has a gift for imagery that pulls you into a scene. But in true Lisa Wingate fashion, there are also plenty of happier moments to relieve the sadness and many truths uncovered. The other voice is that of Avery, the daughter and heir-apparent of a political dynasty. Her story gives some interesting insights into how political families live their lives on display. She wasn't the most sympathetic character in the beginning, but she did grow on me as she learned to be more aware of her own aspirations and feelings. This is a well-crafted new effort from Wingate – one of those books you can't put down and you don't want to end!Pittypat

The story and people are fiction but based on true events that happened in Memphis Tennessee when Georgia Tann was investigated for child trafficking, running a black market baby adoption scheme that involved powerful political and Hollywood figures. Lisa Wingate gives life to each character and their surroundings; you'll hurt for the victims as if they truly existed. I can easily recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about human emotion, especially when the plot is based on historical events. It will captivate you with the first page, and you'll keep reading until you can make sense of the mess created by stolen children, whose identities were wiped clean, names and histories changed. Excellent read, but will leave you with a sadness that this situation happened and flourished during harsh times. This is the second copy of An Unquiet Mind I have purchased because it's a book you reread and wind up giving to someone, but want to keep reading. The quality of writing is excellent. Parts make me laugh, parts make me cry but I relate to it all.. It's not too technical although Kay is a psychologist; she writes as a human being with an illness, not analytically and from a distance. Get a copy for yourself if you have BPD or get one for a friend or loved one who has it. This is a top choice in my library.barbarsylvai0

I received this book from Kensington Publishing and Influenster in exchange for my honest review. I’m always down for books that are historical fiction. A time period I haven’t read as much about though is the depression era. And this one didn’t disappoint. I honestly had no idea about turpentine camps and turpentine farms etc. I definitely had to do some digging on what it even is. So I would have appreciated a little more detail there in the book. It didn’t take away from the story not knowing, but it would have been helpful. This story follows Del and Rae Lynn on their two converging story lines. I liked the character development of Rae Lynn becoming more of her own person and finding her own path. I also liked the development of Del and becoming a bit more honorable. I do wonder if he would have transformed as much had he not ran into the physical troubles he did. Overall I appreciate the light this story and ones like it shed on the hardships of that time and the ways people were taken advantage of. Mainly the ways we kept slavery well and alive just under a different name.amber.b
I loved how the author made the historical setting haunting and atmospheric. I always appreciate a book where I feel I learned something new, and the story did not disappoint. The author provides a rich history of North Carolina and its name as the Tar Heel Estate. The author also covers other topics like turpentine distilling and also makes the timeline of the Depression feel realistic. I was shocked, angry, moved, and satisfied as I read this book. It made me appreciate life and be thankful for so many things. Overall, “The Saints of Swallow Hill” is a beautiful historical novel that I would recommend to all. As a doctoral student, I rarely have time to read for pleasure like before. Thankfully, this interesting read has captured my attention at every chapter. Del is a hoot for sure and had to learn some valuable lessons about the importance to not coveting others wives. The author did a great job capturing every aspect of the scene and made you feel like you were there. The scenes involving racism, discrimination, and overall treatment towards Blacks were cringe-worthy at times, which was unsettling. However, as stated, the author did a good job illustrating what life was like during the great depression. In some instances, it resembled slavery. I look forward to reading other works by Donna Everhart. Great read.demorrow .l

A well done psychological thriller. This might even be my favorite psychological thriller book! A woman commits a horrific crime and then goes silent, and is placed In a psychiatric ward. Everyone has given up on trying to reach her except for one young therapist. I love how the author dives into such a serious psychological response and helps us all try to understand it as we read. There's no judgement for those with mental illness and he tries to paint a picture for us what it would be like and to what extents humans will go to when they are fearful and scared. It was amazing to see how the author could develop a character so well even when she didn't speak! There are many surprises, that's probably all I should write! You'll love this!ajskid
This book is an easy and pleasant read. There is little to no suspense, horror or macabre. The "twist" will please some, but will be a bit disappointing to others. The middle of the book is very interesting, moves well, and is the main reason that I pushed my review to 4 stars. The rest of the book (chapters 1-3 or so, and the final twist and conclusion portions) were very run of the mill. This was the first book I purchased in a few years. I am trying to get back to my tradition of buying a bestseller written by an author I am unfamiliar with over the holidays. (This is how I discovered Dan Simmons, whose book "The Terror" stands as one of my most rewarding choices so far). This one was mostly a disappointment. My advice is to find it cheap or even shop for a used copy. There's a good chance you won't hang on to this one.Father Wolverine

My opinion – Very well researched topic and the quotes at the start of every part of the book make sense at the end Every scenario described feels so realistic and I was amazed how much engrossed I was in this book Nice pace and a very easy to understand and read kind of language used The plot has a nice edginess and it wants you to keep turning pages to figure out what happens next! I was amazed at the flawless development of the characters, outstanding buildup and curiosity maintained and in fact increasing as pages turned! The final twist is the unique climax and no matter how much aware you are of the story, you'll still not be able to predict it and I was mind blown by that sole fact The chapters are well divided and the engrossing fast-paced read makes it a page turner for sure! I enjoyed this wonderful psychological drama ride and cannot believe it is debut novel by Alex. Kudos!! Conclusion – It is definitely a clever and intriguing story with a mind-blowing twist to enjoy! Way too depressing No more. The tiny bit of light at the end was far too small to make up for all the sadness. The notes at the end tell us her family lost someone dear in this pandemic so it appears Ms Hannah wants to be sure everyone shares her grief. We are already there. I needed something to lift me above today’s darkness and this sure wasn’t it. I can’t recommend it to anyone and will in fact recommend my friends NOT to read it. Unfortunately I know some have already bought it. I’ll not buy any more by her. This review was inspired by another reviewer. It is NOT a feel good book at all. The title of this book drew me in, but as I turned the pages the plot got better and better. Yes, most of what happens here I never saw coming, but it reads like real life, things you really don't know about another person. Once you finish the book, which really didn't take me long, I had to have answers, make sure you read the author's notes. Yes, sadly it is based on a true story, not the actual story, but I could see how the author used parts of it and then the reality of what happened through the eyes of the writer became even clearer. This one becomes a compelling page turner, and pulls in a lot of different areas, and how they all pulled together, you don't want to miss this one! I wasn't sure I wanted to read this one, but it was a selection for one of my book clubs. It has been a long time since I felt compelled to finish a book in a day. The sorry just kept sucking me in every time I thought I could put it down. The primary twist in the book I could see coming fairly early in the book but it really didn't detract from the story and there were some less predictable twists. I really did laugh out loud and the ending is satisfying. Why wouldn't you read a book primarily set in a town where the mayor is a dog?Kristen
