Product Details:
Now a major motion picture a man called otto starring tom hanks! #1 new york times bestseller—more than 3 million copies sold! meet ove. he’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. he has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. people call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” but must ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. so when one november morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a u-haul. all of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations. fredrik backman’s beloved first novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “if there was an award for ‘most charming book of the year,’ this first novel by a swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (booklist, starred review).
Reviews:
Both my mother and I are book addicts and devoured the first book that we've read by Frederik Backman. I immediately ordered 2 others by him. Ove is an "outsider" in terms of modern-day society, or as it's described, a curmudgeon. As I am a bit the same, I found this book particularly delightful as Ove is forced out of his inner life due to circumstances. It is a commentary on modern society. Those of us who prefer a solitary life, to read or spend time alone, are viewed as outsiders, yet Ove learns that helping others changes his life and theirs. The humor is a surprising bonus! A MUST READ and you will be through it in 3 readings and order his others from BAM.Susan
I liked this book but I didn’t love it, I’ve read much better novels. I read about 1/3 of it and then stopped as I couldn’t really get into it as I found it pretty boring. After a year I decided to read the remainder of it since I had spent the money on purchasing it. It all came together and I found it heartwarming. It’s not a book that would be on my top 10 to recommend but I wouldn’t discourage someone not to read it.essie.p
What a brilliant book , well written brilliant translation and funny. Observations are excellent and really funny. The topic is interesting as is the living in spite of everything. It touched parts of me deeply and is incredible to make me laugh and cry in the same book. Really really great read followed by watching the Swedish sun titled film! Love itnashhy

Reviews:
I just got done rereading this book for Halloween and it’s so amazing! Such a good read from cover to cover! There are a lot more details and back stories in the book and it does answer a lot of questions I had about the movie. If you are a fan of the movie or a horror aficionado this is a great book for you.robin.h
Such a fantastic read. The kind of book you can’t put down… what else are you to expect when picking up a SK novel? The man is a genius. As for the movie…. it was infuriating. If you’re a book snob like me and can’t stand when movies don’t stick to the script, do yourself a favor and don’t watch this one.alexandria.w
Quite simply put, The Shining is the best horror story I have ever read. It scared the hell out of me. Over a period of time, I have noticed certain standard "motifs" in horror stories. One of these I call "The Lost Child". Such stories will typically involve a child, who can see what the silly grownups cannot see (or, even if they do see, don't acknowledge because it goes against reason and logic): and who fights, however high the odds stacked against him/ her are. Danny Torrance is such a boy. Danny can read minds. He can see the frightening thoughts inside his Dad's and Mom's heads ("DIVORCE", "SUICIDE") but is powerless to do anything about it. Danny does not know that he has a gift; he takes it as a matter of course, until Dick Halloran of the Overlook Hotel tells him that he "shines on". Jack Torrance, Danny's Dad, reformed alcoholic and struggling writer, is trying to put his life back together after a tragedy. He gets what he sees as the ideal chance when he lands the job of caretaker of the Overlook Hotel for the winter. In the snowed-in hotel with only his son and wife Wendy, Jack assumes that he will get enough quality time to be with his family, patch up old quarrels, and write that breakout novel. But the Overlook has other plans. The hotel, which feeds on and grows in strength from the evils committed on its premises, wants Danny-permanently-to join its crew of ghostly inhabitants. And to do that, it needs to get to Jack… The novel slowly grows in horror, starting with mild unease, moving up through sweaty palms and dry mouth, to pure, gut-wrenching terror. Jack's slow slide into madness is paralleled by the growth in power of the hotel's dark miasma, and Danny's extraordinary capabilities. We are on a roller-coaster ride into darkness. The world of grownups is often frighteningly incomprehensible to young children: these fears seldom die as we grow up, but remain dormant in our psyche. There are very few of us who does not have a ghost in our childhood somewhere. It is when the writer invokes this ghost that story gets to us. King does a masterly job of awakening that child, and putting him/ her in the midst of childhood terrors through the alter ego of Danny Torrance, lost in the cavernous corridors of the Overlook. There are a lot of passages which literally creeped me out in this novel (the topiary animals, the fire hose in the corridor, the woman in the bathroom to name a few). As King has said elsewhere, the monster behind the door is more frightening than the monster slavering at you: this book is full of such monsters. More importantly, you will keep on remembering your own boogeymen while you are reading; and long after you finish, you will feel the urge to look behind you. Horror stories are a form of catharsis. As King says, the writer takes you to the body covered under the sheet: you feel it, and are frightened. At the same time, you are relieved that the body is not you.Rene
6. Sapiens: A Brief History Of Humankind [Book]

Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout.new york times bestsellera summer reading pick for president barack obama, bill gates, and mark zuckerberg from a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.” one hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited earth. yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. what happened to the others? and what may happen to us? most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but dr. yuval noah harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. from examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.dr. harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of jared diamond, james gleick, matt ridley, robert wright, and sharon moalem.
Reviews:
Sapiens is an insightful, history-laden explanation of how and why we humans organize ourselves the way we do. At the same time, it's a readable story of human history. Harari is an apt guide who doesn't preach, but lays out for us how we may have come by some of our inner workings. At a time when the future looks opaque, an unflinching look at our past can do wonders. I read all three Harari books this past summer, but found Sapiens to be the most compelling and important work of the three. A book that will change your mind, if you're open to it.jwregularguy
The book is a modern day classic which tries to reason why certain decisions were chosen over the other and how these decisions have shaped up the course of human history. While giving us potential explanations, Yuval also reminds us that these are mere speculations or theories and nobody can be sure what was going inside the minds of homo sapiens at that time. Some chapters are a bit of a stretch, though when someone tries to summarize the course of 70,000 years of human history into 416 pages, one can hardly complain. I have given an extra star for BookishSanta team who have provided the book in original (color edition) form with a nice touch of handwritten note.Utkarsh Y.
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and had me gripped from page one. The author puts things into perspective – drawing analogies and parallels – that is shocking , surprising and even funny. I felt a number of emotions reading this, from ignorance, astonishing intellect, shock, horror, surprise, anger, sadness, hunger? I highly recommend for anyone looking for a easy, albeit enlightening read about the development of human, society and life as we know it.Gene
7. Iron John: A Book About Men [Book]

Product Details:
The 25th anniversary edition of the groundbreaking new york times bestseller, with a new afterword by the author–which offers a new vision of what it is to be a manin this timeless and deeply learned classic, poet and translator robert bly offers nothing less than a new vision of what it means to be a man. bly's vision is based on his ongoing work with men, as well as on reflections on his own life. he addresses the devastating effects of remote fathers and mourns the disappearance of male initiation rites in our culture. finding rich meaning in ancient stories and legends, bly uses the grimm fairy tale "iron john"-in which a mentor or "wild man" guides a young man through eight stages of male growth-to remind us of ways of knowing long forgotten, images of deep and vigorous masculinity centered in feeling and protective of the young. at once down-to-earth and elevated, combining the grandeur of myth with the practical and often painful lessons of our own histories, iron john is an astonishing work that will continue to guide and inspire men-and women-for years to come.
Reviews:
This book is one I read years ago in my twenties. I read it again in my forties a few years ago. I'm buying it soon to read again. I gave my copy away. Basically, for every man in any society, this is a must-read. Robert Bly poetically crafts an absurdly insightful book based on what men need in today's world – balance. To balance the need for sensitivity without the crippling crutch of toxic masculinity. Masculinity is good and needed, but when it's coupled on the back of confidence that isn't genuine, it's arrogance. This and the development of a brand of men that have no genuine backbone is the focus of Robert Bly's work. Bly artfully creates and identifies a societal archetype that has infected and metastasized throughout our country. I highly recommend this book for any man of any age who'd like to come to the realization that they have feelings and want to be in touch with those feelings.Robert
Rather intense, philosophically influenced story about the coming of manhood. While I read this on a recommendation for relating to my young teenager and his experience through growing up in two blended families, I find myself diving deep into my own psyche to understand where I am on this journey. Not for the faint of heart and not an easily understood story, but with a little investment it is eye-opening and thought-provoking.Clinton

Reviews:
What can I say? If you haven't read Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck you are definitely missing out on something! Giving a synopsis of the story doesn't really do any justice to what you will find inside this fantastic book. Of Mice and Men is a really nice insight not only into issues at the time such as industrialisation, but into basics such as human nature, a theme which is timeless in its own regard. I recommend this book to anybody who likes to read full stop.
The book had rough cut, uneven pages. I've never actually seen a book that had pages cut to different widths like this. Book was supposed to be a Christmas Gift, but after seeing the poor quality of the pages, I just let them have the book early and I'll have to find another gift. (It wasn't worth the time and effort to return right now). I would've rated it 1 star, but the cover was unexpectedly high quality and really nice looking. It's a shame the pages weren't the same high quality.Lee

William Gibson tillbaka i god stil. Tove S
THE PERIPHERAL by William Gibson is one of the most prescient Science Fiction novels of the twenty-first century. Gibson, best known for his cyberpunk novels NEUROMANCER and MONA LISA OVERDRIVE, creates a future North America where governments are micromanaged not only by big businesses, but from multi-national conglomerates from other dimensions – corporate entities with the means to contact one reality from another. The most telling feature of THE PERIPHERAL is how the author includes the use of drones – those that fly, and others that walk and talk and look very much like "us." Having met and listened to the author speak on various subjects, I am in awe of his writing style, but even more his uncanny knack for maintaining steady pressure on the very pulse of all that is current, hep, and NOW. Readers will find his latest novel a compelling journey, with memorable characters – one of those books that, once one is finished reading it, the reader is sad to have left the world and its people.vonblut

Reviews:
I have just ordered two more copies, after only reading the intro.—and Prof. Peterson's numerous interviews simply expand my own heart. In this climate of high anxiety and appalling lack of compassion, echoed by Hugh MacKay in AUSTRALIA REIMAGINED. It is no wonder that he has an enthralled audience of millions, world- wide. My wish is that Prof. Peterson will produce a primer affirming our children and youth, to give them hope— for our learning young to master before they get to our Uni's. that have to do their own serious reflecting. In my opinion. AND to give our valiant teachers stronger morale and endurance—as so vividly depicted in Gabbie Stroud's TEACHER, also published last year. Finally, the more I devour of the Prof.'s 'Rules' the more I want to yell my rental's roof off , in agreement—our kids CAN be brought up in a far better world, if we follow Jordan's example of such raw courage and exemplary scholarship and teaching. I only wish that I could buy another 12 copies to share around !KCKLL
This is the third book I purchase as a gift. Jordan Peterson tells it as it is in how one should behave to be a functional human being in society. This is sadly supposed to be the role of parents but not many parents nurture their kids anymore by teaching them the basic life skills. I've seen so many young people can't keep their own room organised yet trying to solve the world's most complex problem. Let's keep it to basic – stand up straight, make yourself better than who you are yesterday and clean up your room before you try to solve any life's complex problem. You will be more content and happier in life and no longer feeling depressed all the time. Great for both men, women and anyone. I'm a woman who loves this book. This book has changed my life!!This book changes my life
An excellent book written with great depth and understanding about living a life. It is necessary to read at least twice to get a more complete picture of what Peterson is on about. Best of all this book made me think deeply about living a life and the ultimate ending of that life. Highly recommended but only to serious readers and certainly not for shallow thinking people.Bob
13. Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir Of A Family And Culture In Crisis [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller, named by the times as one of "6 books to help understand trump's win" and soon to be a major-motion picture directed by ron howard "you will not read a more important book about america this year."—the economist "a riveting book."—the wall street journal"essential reading."—david brooks, new york timeshillbilly elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class americans. the disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.the vance family story begins hopefully in postwar america. d.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love,” and moved north from kentucky’s appalachia region to ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. they raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from yale law school, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. with piercing honesty, vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history.a deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, hillbilly elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. and it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the american dream for a large segment of this country.
Reviews:
In all areas of the USA there are "hillbilly" people even if they don't go by that title. Ignorance is not limited to the southern part of our nation, nor is drug use, illegitimate children or low income jobs. We all have issues of some kind no matter where we live. Yes, he pulled himself up by his boot straps to make something of himself, but there are people like that all over the country.spo5158-6fasuqitzw
This movie, hands down, is the best movie I have seen yet! This movie really can make you feel what it’s like to have a loved one succumbed in addiction, or even show you how another views you in addiction. I am a recovering addict, I have never had something touch me and show me the reasons I stayed sober, furthermore I could see how I truly acted towards others. This movie is truly an inspiration!!!!!katlin.w
This is an excellent memoir of life in a disadvantaged community in rust-belt USA and how the author escapes from it and climbs the social ladder to achieve a successful career. However, whilst he achieved the American dream most people in the community did not and they still live in poverty surrounded by unemployment and drugs. The book sheds some light on why many people became disillusioned with the Washington elites and voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Whether he can solve their problems is a question unanswered.John

I feel like this is just a book you need to have on hand. It was required reading for my youngest sister, but not for me (it hadn’t been out long when I was in HS). I’m happy I finally got around to reading it. I was engaged in the story and definitely wanted to know what was coming next. I can see this being most beneficial to young adults who are figuring out life’s next steps. But, it’s also got a nostalgic sense about it for middle aged adults (myself) as well.Tattooedbluebird
It’s a good read. Love it. I read it before but I wanted to read it again and have it in my bookshelf. The cover is a paper cover that moves around sometimes it might bug people. You can remove it and it’s a hard blue book underneath. It doesn’t bother me. I like it. I will buy more to give out as gifts.Kiki

Product Details:
Now a major motion picture directed by peter farrelly, starring zac efron and russell crowe! instant new york times bestseller instant usa today bestseller "chickie takes us thousands of miles on a hilarious quest laced with sorrow, but never dull. you will laugh and cry, but you will not be sorry that you read this rollicking story."–malachy mccourt a wildly entertaining, feel-good memoir of an irish-american new yorker and former u.s. marine who embarked on a courageous, hare-brained scheme to deliver beer to his pals serving vietnam in the late 1960s. one night in 1967, twenty-six-year-old john donohue–known as chick–was out with friends, drinking in a new york city bar. the friends gathered there had lost loved ones in vietnam. now, they watched as anti-war protesters turned on the troops themselves. one neighborhood patriot came up with an inspired–some would call it insane–idea. someone should sneak into vietnam, track down their buddies there, give them messages of support from back home, and share a few laughs over a can of beer. it would be the greatest beer run ever. but who'd be crazy enough to do it? one man was up for the challenge–a u. s. marine corps veteran turned merchant mariner who wasn't about to desert his buddies on the front lines when they needed him. chick volunteered. landing in qui nho'n, chick set off on an adventure that would change his life forever–an odyssey that took him through a series of hilarious escapades and harrowing close calls, including the tet offensive. but none of that mattered if he could bring some cheer to his pals and show them how much the folks back home appreciated them. this is the story of that epic beer run, told in chick's own words and those of the men he visited in vietnam.

I gave this book to my son as a gift. He is retired military and also enjoys beer! When I last spoke to him he was definitely loving this book and amazed how the whole beer run was falling in place. 20. Homo Deus: A Brief History Of Tomorrow [Book]

Product Details:
Official u.s. edition with full color illustrations throughout. – new york times bestseller yuval noah harari, author of the critically-acclaimed new york times bestseller and international phenomenon sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity’s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods. – over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. this may seem hard to accept, but, as harari explains in his trademark style—thorough, yet riveting—famine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. for the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. the average american is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at mc – donalds than from being blown up by al qaeda. – what then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? homo deus explores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century—from overcoming death to creating artificial life. this is the next stage of evolution. this is homo deus. – with the same insight and clarity that made sapiens an international hit and a new york times bestseller, harari maps out our future.

I couldn't stop reading his previous book Sapiens, and was super keen on both Deus and the 21 Lessons books. Deus is still mostly about the past, and only the last quarter of the book touches on the future. There's still some great insights, but more could have been done with the discussion on AI, nanotechnology, and whether humans are upgraded or replaced. Less on the past and more on the future would have scored 5 stars.David L
Interesting view of the future, oversimplified in places. It provides one view of the future that is quite compelling and worth reading about. IMHO, it overstates the probability of transition from task specific AI to generalised AI. It also completely overlooks the role of complexity and emergence in the way it describes living organisms and organic brains as merely algorithms.
The subject matter is very important for an understanding of our past and future. His revision of the more traditional parameters for describing the past of homo sapiens is thought provoking, but he does not seek the false status of an "authority". He writes clearly and with sufficient detail but without swamping the reader with indigestible facts. The reader is able to move on their thinking, but will definitely keep the volumes for regular future reference,sbgarton2012
