Reviews:
The Girl on the Train was hyped up to such an extent that I really felt that I would be missing out on something if I didn't read it. It has been plastered over bookshop store fronts and has had it's own dedicated display areas which lead me to believe this was the next big thing. Sadly, I was mistaken. I started with the best intentions. I like to keep an open mind before totally discarding a book, which I feel I did with this book. But, I also feel one of the reasons I did finish it is because it's not really a long read. We meet the character Rachel. From the offset I got the impression that she was quite a lonely, sad character, however, as the plot goes on I got to learn not only is she sad and lonely but an alcoholic, love sick, overdramatic, non-sensical human being. Her character is annoying and foolish but honestly it doesnt stop there, as I soon learned there would be no love lost between me and any of the characters in this book. Rachel goes for a journey on the train everyday, passing by the house she used to live in with her cheating ex-husband Tom, who now lives there with his new wife and child, Anna and Evie. Although Rachel has no real reason to be travelling this route, she is quite obsessed with the fact that a new woman has taken her place in the house she was so happy in. The train tracks run alongside the gardens of this street of houses, giving Rachel a clear view of the goings on in each house. In her own mind she gets to know the neighbours, she creates names, identities and stories for them, all from her intense study of them from her seat on the train. One day whilst passing on the train, she witnesses something quite out of the ordinary in the neighbours house and soon learns a missing woman has been reported. We join Rachel on her unrealistic, detective mission to find out what really happened to the woman. There is no mystery as to what I thought of this book. It felt like a poor attempt to be in the same category as Gone Girl. There were very similar elements to this book, especially the writing style and diary entry layout but for me it just didn't work. I can appreciate a murder- mystery but this is not one I'll be recommending to friends. In a sentence: A very mild, boring version of Gone Girl. Rating: 2/5 Published: 2015maria.l
When this originally came out I rushed to Barnes Noble and picked it up right away- I was so excited to read it! But it sat on my bookshelf for hmmm over a year until finally I decided to read it. I don't know and also DO KNOW what I was waiting for! I lost a whole day plus a night of sleep reading this! WHOA. Rachel Watson, divorcee and alcoholic, rides the 8:04 train every morning into London and spies on the "perfect" couple whom she names Jess and Jason. Jess, beautiful blonde with a lithe body, and Jason the tall brooding protector- two strangers characterized out of a romance novel take up too much space in Rachel's mind. When Rachel sees something shocking from the train window her obsession reaches a peak moment and she immerses herself in the couple's lives. Jess has turned up missing and Rachel believes she may hold key information into finding her. As Rachel moves in on Jess and Jason's lives, she comes head to head with her past as well. Rachel is an utterly despicable character at times but deep down she truly is a good person. I identified with her probably more than I should have- thrust into her world of introversion and a little too much to drink, I couldn't "hate" her because I sympathized too much with her. I felt an emotional connection, especially during her darkest of pages. I felt her desperation, panic, loathing, and overall want to recognized- to be important. I thought this book was perfectly paced- enough was revealed bit by bit to keep the pages turning. There were major and startling plot twists but enough foreshadowing that I enjoyed trying to figure out the mystery myself. I found the ending sort of "meh"- how it all came together at once but I did not predict the "who dun it." (I really might think the worse of people). I have already borrowed this book out and am urging others to read it- its soooo good! Highly recommended! I cannot wait to see the movie adaption.regan.d
The first one third to half of the book is a little hard to get into, but inevitably I kept reading because the writer does a good job of drawing you into the mystery and making you too curious about the ending to stop reading. Initially it is a bit confusing if you’re not paying attention. The book is written in the first person perspective of three different characters; each chapter is labeled with the name of the character whose perspective you’re now reading, along with the date. I rated it highly because the actual mystery is intriguing and unpredictable. It will have you continuously guessing as it reveals further clues into the mystery. I knocked it down to 4/5 stars because none of the characters are likeable or particularly relatable. I found myself frequently frustrated and annoyed with the main female character, and the other two main female characters were extremely narcissistic and difficult to sympathize with. Overall, it’s an interesting, unique crime mystery and worth the read.afiyah.a

Reviews:
A bit of a struggle to get through at times, if I'm being honest. The cover drew me in because I was looking for a scary read, but the premise (a murderer in a house that can travel through time) was initially confusing. I also wasn't the hugest fan of the author's style–the story is a little all over the place at times and I feel it's because she lost her literary voice. However, I enjoyed it by the end.mary.p

Reviews:
What an incredible book. The story, the characters, the relationships between May, Danny, Tia and Mark, the connection felt with the characters, the reality and pain of suicide, the depth of May’s devastation at the loss of Danny, the journey to the rally and May deciding to speak – it was all just so moving and powerful. I loved this book and couldn’t stop reading it. I love how it will inspire and empower students to learn more of their own histories and tell their own stories. I also love how this book will inspire curiosity in teens and adults in to the histories and stories of those who have been silenced and whose histories have been whitewashed. I hope it leads to collective action like the Take Back the Narrative Rally. I really loved May’s journey and the transparency written in to her character as she learned about what Tia and Mark and Black students and the Black community face. I loved every single detail of the rally (from the artwork to the magazine to the students sharing their stories) and know it will inspire students to think of creative ways to do something similar. The beauty of this book is in the details – like how the encounter with the woman at the train stop helped heal May (her realization that her mother was always trying to show love by feeding her and how she could associate the train coming with relief for once). There is so much wisdom and instruction in the text about racism, whitewashed history, the importance of supporting other marginalized groups and how uniting against white supremacy is essential and will help everyone. This book is really phenomenal and I can’t wait to have my oldest two read it / I had to purchase a hard copy because I love it so much and I want my children to read it.Sarah
Couldn’t stop reading. Finished it in two days. Eye opening, heartfelt, kept me on the edge. 22y/o female.Emily
I can’t say enough about how amazing this book is. It is a beautifully written story that pulls you in from the very beginning and masterfully winds you through the journey told through the lens of the main character. You know a book has you in its hold when you’re dreaming about the story. Could NOT put it down!! I can’t wait to share this book with my daughter (12) and literally everyone else I know. Don’t wait any longer to get this book you didn’t know you needed in your life!Mom of 3

Reviews:
All the Bright places is a truly honest and beautiful book, daring to give a raw, unfiltered story of love and loss. This story is heartbreaking and thought-provoking brilliantly depicting the struggles of mental illness. The characters of Finch and Violet are unapologetically authentic, flaws and all. The way in which their characters develop is flawlessly portrayed. The pace is also held strongly throughout the book, allowing for the full attention of the reader. This book is brilliantly written and deeply moving.Sarah
I finished this book in 6 days (which is extemley fast for me, it usually takes me a couple of months to finish a single book). It was very easy to get hooked on. If you like super depressing and heartwrenching stories than this book is for you. Although I would be cautious if you struggle with any triggers.Moni
Well told story about teenage angst. Characters are fully developed and believable. It is a rough subject but the author does a great job. I would read more by Jennifer Niven.tasson
12. Big Life Journal: Teen Edition [Book]
Product Details:
A guided journal for tweens and teens.
Reviews:
Love this for my 7 yr old who has had a hard time with anxiety especially due to the pandemic. It has helped reframe his days in a positive light. As well reminds him that failure is an opportunity for learning a lesson. It takes maybe 3 mins a night to fill it out and he loves to share it with my husband and I.Shannon M.
The Big Life Journal just arrived at our house the other day. Being a perfectionist, my son struggles with accepting ownership of his negative emotions and behaviours; according to him, his emotions and behaviours are everyone else’s fault. Last night he struggled and was quite rude (yay pre-teen). Eventually, I had to remove myself from the situation and just got ready for bed. About 1/2 an hour later my son comes into the room with his Big Life Journal. He showed me the pages he filled out and we had a good conversation about them. He was calmer and apologized for his earlier behaviour. He enjoyed seeing where he had a fixed mindset and where he had a growth mindset. It was super cool to see that he could identify that. It was a good conversation and it was nice to see him feel good about himself and see where he could be more open minded. A great start!! Thank you!!!Maureen
It would always seem like I just had too much going on. I kept trying and implemented questions off and on with my preteen. I have loved this since we started. I did have to rush through. We set the same time once a week and went through the journal weekly and wow it spurred some really good discussions and a deeper understanding. It seemed to help her knowing I went through a lot of the same things, but was very careful not to answer things for her but just prompting and taking time. Time is key. She loves this journal and is now doing the teen version in her own and discusses topics with more ease. Raising a healthy, independent adult is the goal.Jd

Reviews:
My Review: American Singer lives in a world where rankings rule. The higher your ranking the poorer you are and the less you contribute to society. For America she and her family are 5's and life is hard barely having enough food or money to support the family. However their lives just might change forever. 35 girls are in competition with each other to win the heart of Prince Maxon and wear the crown. For America the Selection is a nightmare how can she possibly love someone like Maxon? Especially when her heart is committed to someone else? All right so I have some mixed feelings about this book. First off I want to say that I always try my best to never compares books. But sometimes those thoughts creep up and there's nothing you can do to stop them. All I could think about during the first few chapters of this book was how it echoed Amiee Carter's Pawn. I was going to list a few similarities but I decided against that. I have the 50 page rule if I do not like the book within 50 pages I move on. But thank goodness I gave it a try! While those similarities were hard to get past and mind kept going back to Pawn the rest of the book was amazing! The farther in the book the less those similarities kind of faded a little so I was able to get into the book much better. During the last 5 or so chapters I had a hard time putting the book down I had to see what would happen next. I loved the Bachelor aspect of the book and it was just a very good read. However there was something that annoyed me to now end and reading other reviews of this book I know I'm not alone. The names. The names in this book drive me batty! While some are not too bad like Sylvia America Celeste. Others just made my skin crawl when I read them they were a little on the silly side like New Asia Amberly and Sosie to name a few. Something else that bothered me was the use of whisper-yelled I thought when it was used it was again on the silly side. Overall though the book was really a good read I already have the 2nd book in the series waiting for me to read and I'm excited to so. I'm rooting for America and Maxon to fall in love! I think America is too good for Aspen I think he's just playing games with her. Positive Elements: America is a strong young woman. Negative Elements: America's mother is so high strung and can come off rude on occasion. She seems to want nothing more in life than to run America's life and it seems that no matter what she and her family have it never is enough. There were a few swear words in the book like hell and dam*. Spiritual Elements: During one of the rebel attacks some of the Selected were praying. Other Thoughts: This really was a good read and can't wait to see what is in store for America.Elizabeth Marie (Enchanted Book
The Selection was such a surprise to me, and a great book to read! I'm not quite sure what I expected, but as soon as I flipped through the first page, I couldn't stop. (I sucked these books in, in a matter of hours. Whoops.) To set the scene, the country has become a "seemingly organized" (yet unorganized) place where the people revolve around a caste system. The system ranks people and families from one to eight–one being very rich (the royal family) and eight being very poor (usually having jobs as house cleaners, etc.). The Selection is an event where the Prince gets to choose his future bride. Women all over the country submit their applications and 35 are chosen (Yes, it is basically The Bachelor, rewritten). America Singer, our heroine of the story, is a five in the caste system. She's smart, witty, feisty and most importantly, wants nothing to do with The Selection. She's found true love, she has a talent and provides support to her family, and she sees no reason for anything to change. Her mother begs her to enter her name, as entering and winning would not only mean a status change for America, but for her family as well. Any girls in The Selection also receive checks sent to their families to help out while they are away. America, however, would rather be with her true love, Aspen (who is a six in the caste system). Forbidden to be together, they have kept their relationship a secret from family and friends. However, Aspen wants more for her and wills her to give The Selection a try, to submit her application as a "what if". SURPRISE. America gets chosen to be one of the thirty-five girls selection for The Selection. (Didn't see that coming did you?) She has to adjust to new lifestyles, new friends (and enemies), and to what her heart is trying to tell her to do. Of course, being her feisty self, her and the Prince, Maxon, don't always hit it off in the best of ways, but where would be the fun if they did? AMERICA : I loved America. I felt like she was a very strong-willed heroine. She's also kind and unselfish, wanting to stay in The Selection as long as possible to help provide for her family and get some distance from Aspen, who's back in her home town. Her feelings and emotions felt real and connected and she seemed so strong, yet she was struggling with things I felt like I'd be struggling with too if I was in her shoes. MAXON : Prince Maxon is a heartthrob, of course. He seems genuinely nice, well-rounded and just as confused from the whole event as the rest of the girls are. With hidden secrets of his own, he's a character I'm sure we will see growing as the series carries on. I found myself routing for America to just fall in love with him already, since his feelings towards her are quite clear from the beginning. Why couldn't this book just be three rolled into one! It left me needing to know more as the competition narrowed down to six girls. I thought this was a great read and I'd recommend it to anyone trying to find something new.chanon.c
I don’t enjoy reading very much, but this book was actually really enjoyable. I sat down for hours ignoring the rest of the world while I read, and I was so excited to keep reading. They are coming out with a movie soon as well. I definitely recommend for everyone that loves a little romance novel!Queen
14. Girl, Woman, Other [Book]

Product Details:
National bestsellerwinner of the booker prize "a must-read about modern britain and womanhood . . . an impressive, fierce novel about the lives of black british families, their struggles, pains, laughter, longings and loves . . . her style is passionate, razor-sharp, brimming with energy and humor. there is never a single moment of dullness in this book and the pace does not allow you to turn away from its momentum." –booker prize judges bernardine evaristo is the winner of the 2019 booker prize and the first black woman to receive this highest literary honor in the english language. girl, woman, other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of black british women that paints a vivid portrait of the state of contemporary britain and looks back to the legacy of britain's colonial history in africa and the caribbean. the twelve central characters of this multi-voiced novel lead vastly different lives: amma is a newly acclaimed playwright whose work often explores her black lesbian identity; her old friend shirley is a teacher, jaded after decades of work in london's funding-deprived schools; carole, one of shirley's former students, is a successful investment banker; carole's mother bummi works as a cleaner and worries about her daughter's lack of rootedness despite her obvious achievements. from a nonbinary social media influencer to a 93-year-old woman living on a farm in northern england, these unforgettable characters also intersect in shared aspects of their identities, from age to race to sexuality to class.
Reviews:
Girl, Woman, Other is the winner of the Booker Prize 2019 and deservedly so. Bernardine Evaristo has written a powerful story featuring 12 mostly black female characters of different ages from a teenager to a great grandmother from different backgrounds living in the UK. The novel captures a portrayal of modern Britain, presenting 12 original tales of women and their struggles of living in a predominantly white society. Each tale is unique, yet they are all linked. There's a lot packed in this book, with race and gender discriminaton being the most dominant themes of the book. Evaristo adopted an experimental writing style with no full stops or capital letters at the end and start of the sentences. Neither there are quotation marks for dialogues. While the lack of punctuation threw me off balance at first and got me worried this was going to be another Milkman, luckily, that was not the case. After just a couple of chapters I got used to the style and it didn't bother me at all after that. This book is unique and original, unlike anything I've ever read. It is a fascinating, timely and eye-opening read. I'm already thinking that I probably want to re-read the book next year which says a lot as I hardly ever do re-reads.Jim The Runner
If I could miss first 3 chapters, without it meaning the reader would be unable to locate later characters it would be super for me. First half too much change of thought for me. it was still challenging and I appreciate updating the products of my ancient thinking. My critique must be around 40 years out of date, re sex but I am leading the field on colour issues and felt deeply for those dealt with here. Just coming to terms with ageism my self, but at 86 beyond caring too much about that. In this day and age it seems one can still think and feel BUT just do not spout about it, in case someone takes offence at friendly banter. What a challenge this book is. So much so I will read it all again.sheilashmor0
i actually read it before buying my own personal copy ( a friend lent me their copy) but doesnt that say enough about how brilliant this book is??? i rarely ever buy lent books but i simply had to get my own copy. God blesssss this book 10/10! absolutely no faults!far_9179

I love this book !! It is so hard for me to actually finish a book, it has to be so good… yes I am picky !! I am 22 years old and I fell in love with the character of Penny. The book also inspired me to write on my blog again and I really just felt so close with the main character. I cried so much at one point in the book where there's a quick change to the story from it being from a high happy point to then turning into a low point in Penny;s life. I cannot wait to get my hands on the second book !! If you want something fun and romantic and heartwarming to read over the holidays , I RECOMMEND this one 😀 xxkezia.a
When I read this I was in my late 20's. That said I still enjoyed the book. It was a lovely story about a teen blogger that falls for a musical heartthrob. The story was cute, and easy to read, a tad predictable. The part I really enjoyed were discussions of her photography and little blog excerpts.amanda.b
This book has unedited feel which makes me want to attack it with a red pen for a few hours and send it back to the writer. Not Zoe Sugg, the real writer. Yes the admission by Zoella that her book was ghost-written takes away any excuse it may have had for its poor storytelling and complete disregard for basic grammar and syntax. If you are looking for Zoella's usual quality, go back to her blog. If you are looking for a well-written teen girl novel, close this tab as fast as possible.Frankie
