Product Details:
New york times bestseller – now a tnt original series – “a first-rate tale of crime and punishment that will keep readers guessing until the final pages.”—entertainment weekly “caleb carr’s rich period thriller takes us back to the moment in history when the modern idea of the serial killer became available to us.”—the detroit newswhen the alienist was first published in 1994, it was a major phenomenon, spending six months on the new york times bestseller list, receiving critical acclaim, and selling millions of copies. this modern classic continues to be a touchstone of historical suspense fiction for readers everywhere.the year is 1896. the city is new york. newspaper reporter john schuyler moore is summoned by his friend dr. laszlo kreizler—a psychologist, or “alienist”—to view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy abandoned on the unfinished williamsburg bridge. from there the two embark on a revolutionary effort in criminology: creating a psychological profile of the perpetrator based on the details of his crimes. their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who will kill again before their hunt is over. fast-paced and riveting, infused with historical detail, the alienist conjures up gilded age new york, with its tenements and mansions, corrupt cops and flamboyant gangsters, shining opera houses and seamy gin mills. it is an age in which questioning society’s belief that all killers are born, not made, could have unexpected and fatal consequences.praise for the alienist“[a] delicious premise . . . its settings and characterizations are much more sophisticated than the run-of-the-mill thrillers that line the shelves in bookstores.”—the washington post book world“mesmerizing.”—detroit free press “the method of the hunt and the disparate team of hunters lift the tale beyond the level of a good thriller—way beyond. . . . a remarkable combination of historical novel and psychological thriller.”—the buffalo news“engrossing.”—newsweek“gripping, atmospheric . . . intelligent and entertaining.”—usa today “a high-spirited, charged-up and unfailingly smart thriller.”—los angeles times “keeps readers turning pages well past their bedtime.”—san francisco chronicle
Reviews:
Once I got through the first few chapters, I was absolutely was hooked. I enjoyed the interplay of the characters; the plot continued to keep my interest. The last ten to fifteen chapters, however, seemed too rushed and too much about one character (you'll know when you read it). I enjoyed the read; I just wish the last part of the book was as strong as the beginning and middle.Nicole
What the story is about – the early days of detective work and profiling to catch a serial killer – is fascinating. There is also considerable information about New York in the late 1800's. For my taste, that slowed the story down. The descriptions are long. But in the end they get their man and the conclusion is satisfying.BETTY

Reviews:
Very enlightening story about the Korean experience in Japan. A must read if you are interested on Korean and Japanese history. The only flaw is the time line, sometimes the author goes ahead into the future and we misses the oportunity to draw the evolution of the characters. As a reader you are left to fill the blanks. Overall, I would give it a B – but I will still recomend you to read it.acs389
Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko is memorable and full of heart and life’s struggles, ups and downs, challenges, survivals and kindness portrayed in lives of many characters of this unforgettable novel. The author shined a light over Korean people who lived in Japan for many generations, their longing for their unreachable motherland and being forever “outsiders” in Japan. From the start to finish the author told a long but compulsively readable story, and described the harsh life of poor Koreans living in Japan. It also showed how hard work to provide for their family pushed them to work harder, and some of them were successful climbing out of the pit of poverty, and many were not so lucky. Pachinko is a well researched novel and is a pleasure to read.chipen.c
3. I'm Glad My Mom Died (Hardcover) Simon & Schuster

Product Details:
Jennette mccurdy details how she overcame harrowing struggles as a child tv star—including anorexia and bulimia, addiction, severe obsessive-compulsive disorder and a traumatic relationship with her mother. a heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by icarly and sam & cat star jennette mccurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. jennette mccurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. so she went along with what mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. she endured extensive at-home makeovers while mom chided, “your eyelashes are invisible, okay? you think dakota fanning doesn’t tint hers?” she was even showered by mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. in i’m glad my mom died, jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. cast in a new nickelodeon series called icarly, she is thrust into fame. though mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“hi gale!”), jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. these issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the icarly spinoff sam & cat alongside ariana grande, her mother dies of cancer. finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. told with refreshing candor and dark humor, i’m glad my mom died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
Reviews:
The story of the struggle for success in Hollywood, particularly that of a reluctant child and an obsessed stage mother is well-worn territory. So what made this worth reading? Ms. McCurdy spent several years as a Nickleodean star in the early 2000s, even dabbling in a recording career. What makes this so compelling is her ability and willingness to share painful and unique details of her life, as well as that of her families' struggles, and how she was manipulated by her Mother and other adults at the network. She draws you in with a competing conversational style, and doesn't hold back on anything. By the end of the book, the reader is left feeling both moved and pleased with her decisions and intelligence in deciding to move beyond the grief left behind by her experiences. I was drawn from page to page and finished it in one sitting. I'll probably reread it more slowly, to be able to contemplate her unsparing exposition of the path she took to reach this point in her life. I wish her well. Buy it!fisheye

Reviews:
I purchased a copy of this book for both my daughter and myself, on the recommendation of a friend, to gain further ideas in resolving difficult situations. I am still working my way through it, but am very impressed so far. I have gained some very simple tools I will certainly look to try should the need arise. Am looking forward to more ideas being revealed.Marg
My daughter is high functioning autistic and unfortunately she is also type one diabetic. Our home has become a bit of a conflict zone, every day. I was sick of the arguments over food, so i was telling my martial arts tutor about it and he recomended this book to me. The book has shown me how to deal with my daughters emotions from the inside, as well as the night time radio voice and listening for cues. This is just like a hostage situation, you have to know what they are thinking. We love our daughter, however the conflict has took my wife and I to the edge, the book thought has helped to pull us back and to calm our daugher down. Thank you Chris Vos11498

6. And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln And The American Struggle [Book]

Product Details:
New york times bestseller – pulitzer prize–winning biographer jon meacham chronicles the life of abraham lincoln, charting how—and why—he confronted secession, threats to democracy, and the tragedy of slavery to expand the possibilities of america. “in his captivating new book, jon meacham has given us the lincoln for our time.”—henry louis gates, jr. – one of the best books of the year: kirkus reviews – a president who governed a divided country has much to teach us in a twenty-first-century moment of polarization and political crisis. hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, abraham lincoln was at the pinnacle of american power when implacable secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. – at once familiar and elusive, lincoln tends to be seen as the greatest of american presidents—a remote icon—or as a politician driven more by calculation than by conviction. this illuminating new portrait gives us a very human lincoln—an imperfect man whose moral antislavery commitment, essential to the story of justice in america, began as he grew up in an antislavery baptist community; who insisted that slavery was a moral evil; and who sought, as he put it, to do right as god gave him to see the right. – this book tells the story of lincoln from his birth on the kentucky frontier in 1809 to his leadership during the civil war to his tragic assassination in 1865: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end. in a nation shaped by the courage of the enslaved of the era and by the brave witness of black americans, lincoln’s story illustrates the ways and means of politics in a democracy, the roots and durability of racism, and the capacity of conscience to shape events.

7. The Cellist: A Novel [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller"the pace of "the cel-list" never slack-ens as its ac-tion vol-leys from zurich to tel aviv to paris and be-yond. mr. silva tells his story with zest, wit and su-perb tim-ing, and he en-gi-neers enough sur-prises to star-tle even the most at-ten-tive reader."–wall street journal – from daniel silva, the internationally acclaimed #1 new york times bestselling author, comes a timely and explosive new thriller featuring art restorer and legendary spy gabriel allon. viktor orlov had a longstanding appointment with death. once russia's richest man, he now resides in splendid exile in london, where he has waged a tireless crusade against the authoritarian kleptocrats who have seized control of the kremlin. his mansion in chelsea's exclusive cheyne walk is one of the most heavily protected private dwellings in london. yet somehow, on a rainy summer evening, in the midst of a global pandemic, russia's vengeful president finally manages to cross orlov's name off his kill list. – before him was the receiver from his landline telephone, a half-drunk glass of red wine, and a stack of documents…. the documents are contaminated with a deadly nerve agent. and when the reporter slips from london hours after the killing, mi6 concludes she is a moscow center assassin who has cunningly penetrated orlov's formidable defenses. – but gabriel allon, who owes his very life to viktor orlov, believes his friends in british intelligence are dangerously mistaken. his desperate search for the truth will take him from london to amsterdam and eventually to geneva, where a private intelligence service controlled by a childhood friend of the russian president is using kgb-style "active measures" to undermine the west from within. known as the haydn group, the unit is plotting an unspeakable act of violence that will plunge an already divided america into chaos and leave russia unchallenged. only gabriel allon, with the help of a brilliant young woman employed by the world's dirtiest bank, can stop it. – elegant and sophisticated, provocative and daring, the cellist explores one of the preeminent threats facing the west today–the corrupting influence of dirty money wielded by a revanchist and reckless russia. it is at once a novel of hope and a stark warning about the fragile state of democracy. and it proves once again why daniel silva is regarded as his generation's finest writer of suspense and international intrigue.
Reviews:
I have read all Gabriel Allon novels to date. I love the main character and have thoroughly appreciated Mr. Silva's ability to weave historical events and contemporary espionage and political intrigue into terrific plots. For the second consecutive time, the author has determined sharing his own views to be more necessary than weaving a good tale. We don't all agree with his leanings, though he cites sources that think just like he does as proof he's right. He despises Christians and conservatives. He's entitled to his opinion. I simply suggest he write articles for that and leave it out of his fiction. Unless something changes, I have read my last Daniel Silva book as potentially good stories are lost in his self-righteous ramblings, which time and history have proven wrong.DMS
I love Daniel Silva's books and always wait for a new one to come out every summer. But this one was an unexpected disappointment. Too politically charged! Why is it called a fiction if you use real names of politicians and give your opinions of actual events. We can pick up New York times for that. This is not a novel. This is a political piece. And not a very good one. Very disappointed.LM
Weak and over played end. Heard it all before. Not the best Gabriel Allon. Daniel is running out of ideas.Ray

Fast read. Couldn't put it downNANCY
I love the Kendra Michaels character…as well as Adam Lynch! They are fireworks when they are together–I just wish they would make it permanent (but, I guess that will be another story…or two). This was another good book from Johansen and a great storyline, although I did figure it out midway through the book. I'm hoping Johansen's next book about Kendra Michaels will be the romance and love story between she and Lynch. Wow! Wouldn't that be spicy!! Integrating Jessie Mercado into the story also keeps you on the edge of your seat. A good–and quick–read.Dee

Reviews:
This was a terrific read. It's obvious that Gabel and Eichar were the most factual of any book on the subject! The entire book was set up in a manner that enticed me to keep reading and I really appreciated the flipping from the present to the past in an effort to tie the two together. Well written and thoroughly researched. It was a great purchase!1967scifihorrornut
I have been intrigued and fascinated by the tragic mystery of the Dyatlov Pass for many years. In 1959 nine experienced hikers/mountain climbers in the Ural Mountains in the former Soviet Union did not return from their trip. When search parties were sent out to find them, their tent was discovered with huge knife tears in it – made from the inside! As though something horrific had occurred inside the tent that sent the nine young, healthy, highly educated and mentally stable hikers running for their lives into 30 degrees below zero temperatures and extremely high winds. None of them had bothered to put on their boots as all the boots were neatly lined up inside the tent. There were no signs of struggle or violence inside the tent. Eventually all nine bodies were discovered not far from their camp site, none of them wearing their thermal boots and not properly dressed for the intense cold, snow and wind in this unforgiving climate. The official conclusion was that they were killed by an "unknown compelling force." This has left the incident open for 50 years of conspiracy theories concerning just what this "unknown compelling force" was. None of these theories came close to adequately explaining what happened to these nine young people. If you want to find out what most likely DID happen and is certainly the most scientific, logical and sane theory, read Dead Mountain by Donnie Eichar. After reading this book in just two sittings (I couldn't put it down!), now I feel that this tragic mystery has finally been put to rest.kiefer5000
A co-ed band of adventurers undertake a challenging climb. They do not return. Search and rescue teams discover their remains and the unsolved mystery gives rise to wild theories. Reviews:
So excited to read thisRachel
If you'd told me a couple of days ago that I'd be recommending a cozy fantasy book to everyone who crosses my path, I doubt I would have believed you. But here we are. An orc walks away from her old life to open a coffee shop. In a city where almost no one has even heard of "exotic bean water". And that's pretty much the crux of the story, give or take. At face value it sounds kinda cute but nothing I'd expect to be enthusiastically shoving in people's faces, telling them how much they'll love it. Viv's story felt like a comfort read from very early on and I can easily see this being a go to read when I need some time out. I adored Viv, Tandri, Hem, Thimble, Pendry and Cal individually but together this diverse group of kindred spirits felt like home (the good kind). I love that Viv was able to let go of the life that was expected of her and find a bunch of supportive friends who could see beyond her past to who she truly was, friends that encouraged her in her new venture and who had her back. "If mortal danger threatens us, I promise to hide behind you. Deal?" While Tandri was my favourite character, I also had a soft spot for Pendry. I enjoyed cheering them on as they gained the confidence to step outside their comfort zone. I absolutely need a dire-cat in my life. Favourite no context quote: "Things don't have to stay as what they started out as" I'm giving this book however many hm's it takes to fill five stars and can't wait to meet more of Thune's inhabitants in the author's next book. In the meantime, I'd like to order a bean water with milk and a heavenly frosted cinnamon pastry please. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Tor, an imprint of Pan Macmillan, for the opportunity to read this book.Schizanthus Nerd

17. The Christmas Spirit: A Novel [Book]

New york times bestseller – two lifelong friends decide to trade places the week before christmas and end up finding love along the way in this delightful novel from the queen of holiday stories, #1 new york times bestselling author debbie macomber. peter armstrong and hank colfax are best friends, but their lives couldn’t be more different. peter, the local pastor who is dedicated to his community, spending time visiting the flock, attending meetings, and, with the holiday season approaching, preparing for the christmas service and live nativity. as a bartender, hank serves a much different customer base at his family-owned tavern, including a handful of lonely regulars and the local biker gang. when peter scoffs that hank has it easy compared to him, the two decide to switch jobs until christmas eve. to their surprise, the responsibilities of a bartender and a pastor are similar, but taking on the other’s work is more difficult than either peter or hank expected. as the two begin to see each other in a new light—and each discovers a new love to cherish—their lives are forever changed.in the christmas spirit, debbie macomber celebrates the true meaning of the holidays and the inclusive community spirit that binds us all.
Reviews:
The Christmas Spirit by Debbie Macomber is a heartwarming Christmas story. I like the way this story was told. A grandmother is telling two of her grandchildren a story. The tale she tells takes place in 1977. There are chapters in the present with the grandmother and the kids plus the chapters in the past. This is a cute story. I liked the characters. Hank and Pete are the main characters. They have been friends since elementary school. They are having lunch and each one is complaining about their job. It is a busy time for both of them with Christmas only a week away. One of them proposes they switch jobs for the week. Pete, a pastor, will run Hank’s bar while Hank will handle Pete’s pastoral duties. Hank will have the added task of dealing with Pete’s sister and church secretary, Grace Ann who is not Hank’s biggest fan. It is an enlightening experiment for both men. There is plenty of humor. I laughed often while reading The Christmas Spirit. There is a scene with Pete, a biker gang, and darts that tickled my funny bone. There is romance for Pete and Hank as well. Miracles do happen during the holidays. I like Debbie Macomber’s writing style. It is conversational and friendly. I felt like grandma was telling me a story. I just loved the ending. This is one book that you will want to read straight through (make sure you have your hot cocoa and cookies nearby). The Christmas Spirit is a cheerful Christmas tale with a job swap, scrumptious snowballs, a dripping roof, a mulish mule, a biker challenge, a striking server, straightlaced secretary, a dour donor, and party planning.
This a really feel good read, and it really shows the true meaning of Christmas. A grandmother telling a real story to her grandchildren, and a true one, not a Once Upon A Time, and she has to tell her Grandson when there is kissing! Love it! The story is so heart warming, and kind of unbelieveable, a pastor and a bar tender trade jobs! Ok, can you imagine the surprises of the patrons and parishioners! Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall at both places! We have changes of hearts and many surprises, who would have thought that the bartender would give bible lessons? You don't want to miss this sweet read, I really enjoyed it, in fact once the first page was turned I kept reading to the end! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Random House Group – Ballantine, and was not required to give a positive review.MaureenT

Reviews:
great books, detail explain edMd S.A.
Melvyn Bragg is one of my heroes. This book is good but a little too "UK-centric", While the inclusion of a discussion of Newton's Prinicipia Mathematica is informative and worthy of inclusion as a book that changed the world, and while Shakespeare's First Folio is definitely worthy of discussion; other choices like a cricket rule book are so banal as to not even merit discussion. Why I recommend this book; is that unlike the endless procession of stupids who now write and pretend to be competent non-fiction writers; Melvyn Bragg is always erudite and argues his cases in an entertaining and persuasive manner.Al D
