1. Chaos: A Very Short Introduction [Book]

Product Details:
Chaos exists in systems all around us. even the simplest system of cause and effect can be subject to chaos, denying us accurate predictions of its behaviour, and sometimes giving rise to astonishing structures of large-scale order. our growing understanding of chaos theory is having fascinating applications in the real world – from technology to global warming, politics, human behaviour, and even gambling on the stock market. he uses accessible maths and physics (replacing complex equations with simple examples like pendulums, railway lines, and tossing coins) to explain the theory, and points to numerous examples in philosophy and literature (edgar allen poe, chang-tzu, arthur conan doyle) that illuminate the problems. the beauty of fractal patterns and their relation to chaos, as well as the history of chaos, and its uses in the real world and implications for the philosophy of science are all discussed in this very short introduction. about the series: the very short introductions series from oxford university press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. these pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Reviews:
I bought this book in New Zealand, because firstly I am interested in chaos theory and secondly it would fit in my coat pocket. I read it in a single sitting on the return flight from Wellington to Melbourne: this says the book is readable and interesting, because I usually fall asleep on planes. That said I was not satified. It was really a book about mathematical chaos in layman’s terms, and spent a good deal of time dealing with forecasting weather and climate. I particularly liked the quote – “Climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get”. Unfortunately I expected a general discussion on chaos theory, but got a specific discourse on modelling and forecasting. My feeling is the book is incomplete. Perhaps it is the format, which I quite like, but I suspect it has more to do with the author’s interests. Personally I think the James Gleick’s Chaos: Making a New Science , which was published in 1987, is a better introduction. I’m sure there are others. I also found many of the illustrations to be of very poor quality. I appreciate it is difficult in a book of this size to provide intricate illustrations, but surely a colour image or two of a fractual is possible. Altogether I enjoyed reading this book, because it did apply chaos theory to the real world with real examples. At $20 NZ it was excellent value for money and was a happy companion while travelling. It is of interest to anyone who is looking for a very short account on fundamental problems and principles in chaos theory. All in all I would rate it two and a half out of five. Why? Because telling the complete story matters! Regards Graham

4. Chaos : The Making Of A New Science. By Gleick, James. (Book)

Product Details:
Few writers distinguish themselves by their ability to write about complicated, even obscure topics clearly and engagingly. james gleick, former science writer for the new york times, resides in this exclusive category. in chaos, he takes on the job of depicting the first years of the study of chaos – the seemingly random patterns that characterize many natural phenomena. this is not a purely techinical book. instead, it focuses as much on scientists studying events as chaos itself. listeners will meet dozens of extraordinary and eccentric people in this learned but highly accessible book.

7. The Essence Of Chaos [Book]

Product Details:
Chaos surrounds us. seemingly random events — the flapping of a flag, a storm-driven wave striking the shore, a pinball's path — often appear to have no order, no rational pattern. explicating the theory of chaos and the consequences of its principal findings — that actual, precise rules may govern such apparently random behavior — has been a major part of the work of edward n. in the essence of chaos, lorenz presents to the general reader the features of this "new science," with its far-reaching implications for much of modern life, from weather prediction to philosophy, and he describes its considerable impact on emerging scientific fields.unlike the phenomena dealt with in relativity theory and quantum mechanics, systems that are now described as "chaotic" can be observed without telescopes or microscopes. they range from the simplest happenings, such as the falling of a leaf, to the most complex processes, like the fluctuations of climate. each process that qualifies, however, has certain quantifiable characteristics: how it unfolds depends very sensitively upon its present state, so that, even though it is not random, it seems to be. lorenz uses examples from everyday life, and simple calculations, to show how the essential nature of chaotic systems can be understood. in order to expedite this task, he has constructed a mathematical model of a board sliding down a ski slope as his primary illustrative example. with this model as his base, he explains various chaotic phenomena, including some associated concepts such as strange attractors and bifurcations.as a meteorologist, lorenz initially became interested in the field of chaos because of its implications for weather forecasting. in a chapter ranging through the history of weather prediction and meteorology to a brief picture of our current understanding of climate, he introduces many of the researchers who conceived the experiments and theories, and he describes his own initial encounter with chaos.a further discussion invites readers to make their own chaos. still others debate the nature of randomness and its relationship to chaotic systems, and describe three related fields of scientific thought: nonlinearity, complexity, and fractality. appendixes present the first publication of lorenz's seminal paper "does the flap of a butterfly's wing in brazil set off a tornado in texas?" ; the mathematical equations from which the copious illustrations were derived; and a glossary.

8. Chaos And Nonlinear Dynamics: An Introduction For Scientists And Engineers [Book]

Product Details:
Chaos and nonlinear dynamics introduces students, scientists, and engineers to the full range of activity in the rapidly growing field on nonlinear dynamics. using a step-by-step introduction to dynamics and geometry in state space as the central focus of understanding nonlinear dynamics, thisbook includes a thorough treatment of both differential equation models and iterated map models (including a derivation of the famous feigenbaum numbers). it is the only book at this level to include the increasingly important field of pattern formation and a survey of the controversial questions ofquantum chaos. important tools such as lyapunov exponents and fractal dimensions are treated in detail. with over 200 figures and diagrams, and analytic and computer exercises for every chapter, the book can be used as a course-text or for self-instruction. this second edition has been restructuredto make the book even more useful as a course text:many of the more complex examples and derivations have been moved to appendices. the extensive collection of annotated references has been updated through january 2000 and now includes listings of world wide web sites at many of the major nonlineardynamics research centers. from reviews on the 1/e: 'what has been lacking is a single book that takes the reader with nothing but a knowledge of elementary calculus and physics all the way to the frontiers of research in chaos and nonlinear dynamics in all its facets. […] a serious student, teacher, or researcher would be delighted to have this book on the shelf as a reference and as a window to the literature in this exciting and rapidly growing new field of chaos.' j.c. sprott, american journal of physics, september 19944 'i congratulate the author on having managed to write anextremely thorough, comprehensive, and entertaining introduction to the fascinating field of nonlinear dynamics. his book is highly self- explanatory and ideally suited for self-instruction. there is hardly any question that the author does not address in an exceptionally readable manner. istrongly recommend it to those looking for a comprehensive, practical, and not highly mathematical approach to the subject.' e.a. hunt, ieee spectrum, december 1994

9. Chaos: Charles Manson, The Cia, And The Secret History Of The Sixties [Book]

Product Details:
A journalist's twenty-year fascination with the manson murders leads to shocking new revelations about the fbi's involvement in this riveting reassessment of an infamous case in american history. over two grim nights in los angeles, the young followers of charles manson murdered seven people, including the actress sharon tate, then eight months pregnant. with no mercy and seemingly no motive, the manson family followed their leader's every order-their crimes lit a flame of paranoia across the nation, spelling the end of the sixties. manson became one of history's most infamous criminals, his name forever attached to an era when charlatans mixed with prodigies, free love was as possible as brainwashing, and utopia-or dystopia-was just an acid trip away. twenty years ago, when journalist tom o'neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents. when a tense interview with vincent bugliosi-prosecutor of the manson family, and author of helter skelter-turned a friendly source into a nemesis, o'neill knew he was onto something. but every discovery brought more questions: who were manson's real friends in hollywood, and how far would they go to hide their ties? why didn't law enforcement, including manson's own parole officer, act on their many chances to stop him? and how did manson-an illiterate ex-con-turn a group of peaceful hippies into remorseless killers? o'neill's quest for the truth led him from reclusive celebrities to seasoned spies, from san francisco's summer of love to the shadowy sites of the cia's mind-control experiments, on a trail rife with shady cover-ups and suspicious coincidences. the product of two decades of reporting, hundreds of new interviews, and dozens of never-before-seen documents from the lapd, the fbi, and the cia, chaos mounts an argument that could be, according to los angeles deputy district attorney steven kay, strong enough to overturn the verdicts on the manson murders. this is a book that overturns our understanding of a pivotal time in american history.

I bought this as a gift for my boyfriend and he absolutely loved it. He couldn’t put it down. I also bought it because I was very interested and I have to say I was not disappointed. So much information. However, you may need to buy a dictionary as well as there’s a lot of unusual vocabulary choicesKaitlynn
I'm sorry I threw away 20.00 on this book. This is purely fiction. Everything but the truth happened. He claims the motive was wrong. The Manson family told Bugliosi what the motive was, he didn't make it up out of thin air like this author does, in u want to read an excellent nonfiction book, read bugliosi's classic, Helter Skelter.Jason

Well, a lot of words to handle so few topics. Lots of short practical examples of how to do stuff, to maybe do stuff. Considering CHOAS MAGIK is a reform of Ritualistic MagiK, there is a lot of extra stuff in this book. However, lots of stuff related to about 5 different topics. USEFUL for the amateur or beginner, and a good skim for a real practitioner. The author claims 15 years of practice, I was doing this nonsense before he was out of diapers. I however am personally offended by the "Ovayki" a sigil in the title. Nice try.daytrader7951
11. Call Sign Chaos: Learning To Lead [Book]

Product Details:
#1 new york times bestseller – a clear-eyed account of learning how to lead in a chaotic world, by general jim mattis—the former secretary of defense and one of the most formidable strategic thinkers of our time—and bing west, a former assistant secretary of defense and combat marine. “a four-star general’s five-star memoir.”—the wall street journal call sign chaos is the account of jim mattis’s storied career, from wide-ranging leadership roles in three wars to ultimately commanding a quarter of a million troops across the middle east. along the way, mattis recounts his foundational experiences as a leader, extracting the lessons he has learned about the nature of warfighting and peacemaking, the importance of allies, and the strategic dilemmas—and short-sighted thinking—now facing our nation. he makes it clear why america must return to a strategic footing so as not to continue winning battles but fighting inconclusive wars. mattis divides his book into three parts: direct leadership, executive leadership, and strategic leadership. in the first part, mattis recalls his early experiences leading marines into battle, when he knew his troops as well as his own brothers. in the second part, he explores what it means to command thousands of troops and how to adapt your leadership style to ensure your intent is understood by your most junior troops so that they can own their mission. in the third part, mattis describes the challenges and techniques of leadership at the strategic level, where military leaders reconcile war’s grim realities with political leaders’ human aspirations, where complexity reigns and the consequences of imprudence are severe, even catastrophic. call sign chaos is a memoir of a life of warfighting and lifelong learning, following along as mattis rises from marine recruit to four-star general. it is a journey about learning to lead and a story about how he, through constant study and action, developed a unique leadership philosophy, one relevant to us all.
Reviews:
Great read. I've read it once, but I will be going through this book a few times in the near future. This was a war I was in as a young soldier, and it's nice to read about a General who is stating how things go. "Meaning how POLITICIANS start war, and snatch the victory form their own military, by playing regular "D.C" games! I don't see the need for POLITICIANS TO BE INCHARGE OF the MILITARY ONCE WAR IS DECLARED! We SOLDIERS CANT WIN with Washington in charge!ELMORE
I had just finished the first book I purchased from BAM on General Mattis and this is the perfect sequel. I learned a lot about the military and how our generals and other officers are taught to lead and how General Mattis – an astute student of history – applied many of past military leaders to the battles he was called to lead. Very good book and I know I will read it again.RICHARD
Written by a master. Jim Mattis has led at every level from platoon command to Secretary of Defense. He has thought deeply about his profession and his experience of leading across organizational and national boundaries in chaotic circumstances is essential reading for anyone who expects to lead, in government, humanitarian and the private sector. Unfortunately, he does not write about his experience as SECDEF, but his resignation letter speaks volumes. I'm going to read it a second time, this time with a highlighter – because he is so quotable! My only quibble is the way that his co- (ghost) writer creeps into the narrative. He might be a fellow marine, but it isn't about him. If you liked Team of Teams, this is an essential complement to that. I will be buying copies to give friends and family at Christmas!Alan
12. Chaos, Creativity, And Cosmic Consciousness [Book]

Product Details:
Three of the most original thinkers of our time explore issues that call into question our current views of reality, morality, and the nature of life. – a wide-ranging investigation of the ecology of inner and outer space, the role of chaos theory in the dynamics of human creation, and the rediscovery of traditional wisdom. in this book of "trialogues," the late psychedelic visionary and shamanologist terence mckenna, acclaimed biologist and originator of the morphogenetic fields theory rupert sheldrake, and mathematician and chaos theory scientist ralph abraham explore the relationships between chaos and creativity and their connection to cosmic consciousness. their observations call into question our current views of reality, morality, and the nature of life in the universe. the authors challenge the reader to the deepest levels of thought with wide-ranging investigations of the ecology of inner and outer space, the role of chaos in the dynamics of human creation, and the resacralization of the world. among the provocative questions the authors raise are: is armageddon a self-fulfilling prophecy? are the eternal laws of nature still evolving? what is the connection between physical light and the light of consciousness? part ceremony, part old-fashioned intellectual discussion, these trialogues are an invitation to a new understanding of what jean houston calls "the dreamscapes of our everyday waking life."

13. Order Out Of Chaos: Man's New Dialogue With Nature [Book]

Product Details:
A pioneering book that shows how the two great themes of classic science, order and chaos, are being reconciled in a new and unexpected synthesisorder out of chaos is a sweeping critique of the discordant landscape of modern scientific knowledge. in this landmark book, nobel laureate ilya prigogine and acclaimed philosopher isabelle stengers offer an exciting and accessible account of the philosophical implications of thermodynamics. prigogine and stengers bring contradictory philosophies of time and chance into a novel and ambitious synthesis. since its first publication in france in 1978, this book has sparked debate among physicists, philosophers, literary critics and historians.
Reviews:
I bought the paperback version which, having been printed in 1990, is not very readable. The book itself is brilliant, so I had to resort to getting the Google Books version online, which is brilliant. With the online version you can make comments and highlights and they are saved in a file which is downloadable. I would recommend anyone to read this ground-breaking work which has not aged at all! It is well written and easy to comprehend.John
14. Chaos And Dynamical Systems [Book]

Product Details:
Chaos and dynamical systems presents an accessible, clear introduction to dynamical systems and chaos theory, important and exciting areas that have shaped many scientific fields. while the rules governing dynamical systems are well-specified and simple, the behavior of many dynamical systems is remarkably complex. of particular note, simple deterministic dynamical systems produce output that appears random and for which long-term prediction is impossible. using little math beyond basic algebra, david feldman gives readers a grounded, concrete, and concise overview.in initial chapters, feldman introduces iterated functions and differential equations. he then surveys the key concepts and results to emerge from dynamical systems: chaos and the butterfly effect, deterministic randomness, bifurcations, universality, phase space, and strange attractors. throughout, feldman examines possible scientific implications of these phenomena for the study of complex systems, highlighting the relationships between simplicity and complexity, order and disorder.filling the gap between popular accounts of dynamical systems and chaos and textbooks aimed at physicists and mathematicians, chaos and dynamical systems will be highly useful not only to students at the undergraduate and advanced levels, but also to researchers in the natural, social, and biological sciences.
15. Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos: With Applications To Physics, Biology, Chemistry, And Engineering [Book]

Product Details:
This textbook is aimed at newcomers to nonlinear dynamics and chaos, especially students taking a first course in the subject. the presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples, and geometric intuition. the theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.a unique feature of the book is its emphasis on applications. these include mechanical vibrations, lasers, biological rhythms, superconducting circuits, insect outbreaks, chemical oscillators, genetic control systems, chaotic waterwheels, and even a technique for using chaos to send secret messages. in each case, the scientific background is explained at an elementary level and closely integrated with mathematical theory.in the twenty years since the first edition of this book appeared, the ideas and techniques of nonlinear dynamics and chaos have found application to such exciting new fields as systems biology, evolutionary game theory, and sociophysics. this second edition includes new exercises on these cutting-edge developments, on topics as varied as the curiosities of visual perception and the tumultuous love dynamics in gone with the wind.
Reviews:
The author Steven Strogatz was awarded prizes at MIT for excellence in teaching, a good reason to expect a good expository writing style. The book more than lived up to the anticipation. Strogatz takes the reader gently from elementary levels in differential systems into concepts and their relevance in a wide variety of physical applications. Topics are built on one another, as expected in a good exposition, reinforcing what's been taught. Illustrations accompany nearly everything discussed, so people with visual learning styles are not shortchanged. The book covers an impressive range of topics in differential equations with seeming ease, aided by a style that helps create intuition for the underlying technical points. Examples and problems abound, and references to material for deeper exploration are especially helpful where library resources are accessible.newlab
It's a good book for people looking to build intuition in nonlinear systems. It is not a theorem-proof type of book. If you are looking for those, there are several others by say Springer-Velag… This book offers many insights into the geometry of the systems and can be read for fun!yiranhu
