Reviews:
Being a man and reading this book made me angry at first and there was a lot of stuff I really did not want to face, but I wanted to be open and honest and have to admit that the book presents a lot of truths about verbal abuse and narcissistic men. I really didn't think I had and narcissistic traits but I found that I had more than I thought and I really want to repent and deal with it. I was abusive also and it helped me to see what subtle abuse can cause and it magnifies the actual abuse I had done. It's amazing what bringing things to light can reveal. It also reveals how our culture really doesn't deal with abuse as we ought to and how harmful it can be in a seemingly innocent but deceptive way.justme2-us

Has really helped and is a great read for anyone struggling.ellierwill
This isnt just a book about the way that men treat women. This is a book about the way anyone, male or female, interacts in a relationship. The book plunges much deeper into the twisted turbulence of emotional abuse than merely gender based abuse. The author goes much further with her analysis of emotional abuse than any previous book Ive encountered and Ive read several self help books on similar topics. This writer/therapist simplifies the definition while exploring the range of abuse and its widespread destruction in relationships between partners, siblings, friends, parents and even employee/employer relationships. The author uncovers some remarkable facts and candidly explains the basic principles of emotional abuse and the many ways that we have been brainwashed, in many instances, to believe that the abuse we suffer with is normal and even expected. This is definitely a book that every woman and possibly man, should read and absorb. I believe this is one book that will inspired change and help numerous relationships.onesecondchance

Maybe I needed to look further into what this book contained, but it's not a WFPB book. There are some good things in here, but not enough for me to keep it ( same with its predecessor).Tony

Reviews:
A mental health counselor suggested I purchase this book because several of her patients had been helped by its insight. She asked me to let her know what I thought of it. By chapter 6, it had become the best book I've ever read about emotional healing, abuse, psychological damage. The authors keep it realistic and away from self-pity so the reader does not feel like they've been wronged, life is unfair and therefore the world owes them. Instead, it shows the role, how to heal and empathizes with the reader's experience without pity. I felt stronger instead of weaker as I completed each chapter. Another bonus is a summary of what was learned at the end of each chapter to keep the information fresh. Truly recommend it for everyone!chocolateroger

This book was written in a way that you can't help but understand the truth concerning abuse. If you were a victim, the questions were meant for you to answer so that you're better able to understand you're not to suffer the after effects. When this book is used in an accountability group setting, better progress is obtained and you'll grow from your past. When you tell the truth, you won't have to remember anything. By writing it down on paper and sharing this with others, it will free up your mind of unnecessary stress and you'll be able to dredge up more of your past much easier. The bible says to trust in the Lord with all of your heart and don't lean on your own understanding. In all of your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct you and crown your efforts with success. I personally believe that Steve had to yield his mind and heart to the Holy Spirit's guiding in putting this book together. The resulting book is well written and I've witnessed how others are benefitting by being able to better understand why their behaviors are being transformed into ones which are God honoring, instead of yielding to the devil.sluss-richa

Encouragement for the emotionally abused woman is an excellent book that runs alongside her other book with the similar title. This is a bit like daily readings but not so many. It hits the point and reinforces the principles set down in Emotionally Abused Women. It's excellent, I can highly recommend it.

When you have been or are living in an abuse situation self esteem is usually very low and the scripture is very uplifting. To learn more about verbal abuse. I loved all the valuable information. I've read a lot of books on abuse and I must say this is one of the best that I've read.codydom
There are so very few self help books for this type of abuse. It may be your sister or your parent. Yes it is ideal for a male or female in domestic turmoil where there significant other is a narcissist or bully. Too often men suffer at the sneaky word skills of a female abuser. For all those who know there is something a bit off in their relationship or catch themselves doubting their own memory of what they just did. For the children dependent on dysfunctional adult carers. An important book to empower the disempowered.Due force reader
The secret is the use of rational emotive therapy. Contrary to the theory of rational emotive therapy (RET) this book is perhaps too concerned with the victim/crime viewpoint and the motives of the "criminal" (hence its title). This seems to me to work against what RET aims to achieve. A reasonable explanation of RET but perhaps Albert Ellis's book "The Myth of Self-Esteem" would be more useful.

Reviews:
This book changed my life. I am recommending it to everyone I know. It helped me understand verbally abusive relationships and what to do if you're in one. I feel that even if you aren't married to a verbal abuser, you can benefit from reading this book because there are people in everyone's lives that are abusers. This book helped me understand their way of thinking, how to communicate with them, and why what I had tried wasn't working. I think a lot of people don't realize verbal abuse runs much deeper than name-calling, in the same way physical abuse is much deeper than hitting. I think a lot of people don't realize how subtle and manipulative and damaging it can be. This book brings all of this to light. I'm going to encourage my daughter to read it before she starts dating.unbirthday
I first read this book in the late 90s. I was in tears, since it validated all my experiences and helped me feel understood and less alone. Patricia Evans is exceptionally talented at balancing her discussions of the dynamics of abuse *while* empowering victims. There's so much victim-blaming literature out there, and after being verbally abused, the last thing a victim needs is to hear it's her/his fault. Patricia Evans validates the life view of many victims, explains to them why they feel so confused and upset, and offers sensitive, loving, and nonjudgmental advice for dealing with verbal abusers. Now that I'm a college instructor, I keep multiple copies of this book on hand and distribute them when students come to me to discuss their experiences with verbal abuse. I hate to sound like a commercial for this book, but I honestly think this is essential reading for anyone who thinks she or he is experiencing or has experienced verbal abuse. Evans' characterizations tend to be painted with an overly-broad brush, IMO, but she accomplishes what I think is the most important thing: validating and empowering victims and survivors of abuse.valkyrrie
Easy to read and understand for a 'non reader' – Information is Clear and Life-Changing-Helpful. It changed my life when I read it 20 years ago. Since then, I have given a copy of this book to help others when I recognized they were in a verbally abusive relationship. Most recently it was given to a man who has been an extremely abusive marriage for 50 years. He got it. He got out. Most all hope was lost for him, and now he has a chance for true happiness late in life. This book worked like a miracle worker. I, personally, will be forever grateful to Patricia Evans for putting a name on this and putting it out there.bestquest

She makes the book interactive by asking her readers to do certain things to demonstrate many of her points in the book. No one with an open mind and willing spirit will remain unchanged by the book and its message.lladrogiver

How many times have you heard the quote "love heals everything" or "love is the only hope in life" or something similar to those lines? when you look around you, you see all these people happily in love and singing poems about the wonders of love. and then you are confused why you are not able to feel anything on those lines. all you feel is a pit in your stomach, a sense of fear and of always being on edge, but all you did was love, right? you did or are doing everything right, yet this "love" does not seem to be magical or does not seem to be healing you; rather, it appears to be destroying you by driving you crazy, and you notice that you have changed not for good. my first book on narcissistic abuse was published in october 2018, and i started writing it, just to share what had helped me after i left my husband after 10 years of emotional abuse. i had been researching a lot on the subject and found some great books online however i just wanted to share the scriptures and prayer plan that had helped me and a few women in my close circle, to get over our terrible experiences. even though i had been divorced for 3 years at the time i wrote the book, i didn't feel ready to share my personal story. in this book, i will share parts of my story, not because i want to prove a point of how much i suffered, but i realize that survivors of psychological abuse share the same fears, and the purpose of my writing this book, is to hold your hand and give you the courage to face yours as i still do every single day to this very day. i am assuming that if you have arrived here reading this book, then you have already begun the journey of true healing and magic. god has directed our paths to cross at this moment in time and i feel privileged to help guide you in the right direction to find true healing and peace. love, for sure, heals and is magical but only when done in the right manner. in the name of love, people can be poisonous and damage even the strongest souls. it is for this reason that love with a narcissist is bad because it is the wrong type of love. a narcissist does not understand love the way normal people understand it. narcissistic abuse is high on the ranks of toxic forms of love. it damages and destroys the soul like no other, completely changing the way you look at yourself. it rips your soul apart and causes destruction. and that is the biggest danger because no matter how the world looks at you, once your idea of yourself changes, then the damage is done. in this book, you will be taken on a journey of healing by understanding the various forms of abuse, the ways to heal, and finally, the ways to find closure. if you are not the victim who is reading this but know someone who may be in the situation, then this book will help you empathize with the victim and help them deal with their situation. congratulations on taking the first step toward healing: accepting the problem. as it has been said, "to err is human, to forgive is divine," by the time you finish this book, you will be able to forgive yourself and attain closure. what are you waiting for? click buy now
