1. Flawless Execution: Use The Techniques And Systems Of America's Fighter Pilots To Perform At Your Peak And Win The Battles Of The Business World [Book]
Product Details:
"according to former u.s. air force pilot-turned-management guru james d. murphy, businesses need to take a lesson from the american military's fighter pilots. while f-15s, f-16s, and f/a-18s are the ultimate aerial combat machines, they are entirely dependent on the men and women who fly and maintain them. at mach 2, the instrument panel is screaming out information, the horizon is a blur, the wingman is occupied, the pilot's busy, the jet is hanging on the edge — and yet fighter pilots routinely handle the stress. it's not much different in today's fast-paced, unforgiving world of business. one slipup and the company is bankrupt before the employees know what hit them. what works on the squadron level for f-15 pilots will also work for your marketing team, sales force, or research and development group. by analyzing the work environment and attacking its centers of gravity in parallel, you'll begin to utilize the plan-brief-execute-debrief-win cycle that makes up flawless execution. the result will make a rapid impact on your business's future success. developed over the course of nearly fifty years, the rigorous practice of flawless execution has helped u.s. fighter squadrons reduce their mistake rate, cut casualties and losses of equipment, and rack up an envious victory record. through afterburner's multimedia seminars conducted by 'murph' and his fellow pilots-turned-businesspeople, businesses have benefited by adopting the techniques, systems and strategies of america's top guns. now, with flawless execution, you can too."–book jacket.

5. Strategy That Works: How Winning Companies Close The Strategy-To-Execution Gap [Book]
Product Details:
In a recent survey of executives, two-thirds of the respondents said they didn't think their organization could execute the company's defined strategy. why is the strategy-execution gap so pervasive? and what can executives do to close it? in strategy that works, paul leinwand and cesare mainardi share their latest research into how the best companies in the world connect strategy to execution. – having the right capabilities in place is essential; but subsequent research by the authors' firm, strategy&, shows that capabilities alone don't close the gap between what companies aspire to do and what they can actually accomplish. the authors identify, in all, five fundamental principles for connecting strategy and execution, and show how the best companies in the world use these principles to out-execute and out-compete their opponents. they:commit to winning by what they do best, instead of chasing multiple opportunities – focus on and build only those capabilities, instead of benchmarking against competitors – prune what doesn't matter to invest more in what does – leverage the culture they have instead of reengineering it – shape demand instead of constantly reacting to market changes – based on in-depth interviews inside companies that are known for their flawless execution and for redefining the competition in their industries, this book provides executives with the path for connecting strategy to execution.

6. The Art Of Execution: How The World's Best Investors Get It Wrong And Still Make Millions [Book]
Product Details:
Over seven years, 45 of the world's top investors were given between $25m and $150m to invest by fund manager lee freeman-shor. his instructions were simple. there was only one rule. they could only invest in their ten best ideas to make money. – it seemed like a foolproof plan to make a lot of money. what could possibly go wrong? these were some of the greatest minds at work in the markets today – from top european hedge fund managers to wall street legends. – but most of the investors' great ideas actually lost money. shockingly, a toss of a coin would have been a better method of choosing whether or not to invest in a stock. – nevertheless, despite being wrong most of the time, many of these investors still ended up making a lot of money. – how could they be wrong most of the time and still be profitable? the answer lay in their hidden habits of execution, which until now have only been guessed at from the outside world. – this book lays bare those secret habits for the first time, explaining them with real-life data, case studies and stories taken from freeman-shor's unique position of managing these investors on a day-to-day basis. – a riveting read for investors of every level, this book shows you exactly what to do and what not to do when your big idea is losing or winning – and demonstrates conclusively why the most important thing about investing is always the art of execution.
Reviews:
An absolute must for the private investor. Explains very clearly that when an investment starts declining in price, action is required, either to sell, or buy more, depending on the circumstances, doing nothing being the worst possible option. Lots of real life examples being used.perr.ns0v7861
A great book that explains strategies simply well worth the priceroger6869
The author writes well, from an insider perspective that most of us will never have, and the content is interesting and thought provoking. However, for the price there is not a huge amount of content; you could pick up the salient points of the book just from reading internet reviews of it.dcl7

11. Strategic Execution For Executives: How Top Leaders Bring Their A Game To Running A Business [Book]
Product Details:
Strategic execution for executives: how top leaders bring their "a" game to running a business is about the art and science of making things happen from the top. the ability to execute with excellence is one of the major markers of a great executive. conversely, poor execution results in short-term employment. you could say that consistently positive execution is table stakes to playing at the executive level. if you are reading this, and are an executive, you likely have significant expertise in this area. however, chances are you could stand to improve in a few of these competencies. this book will look at various aspects of executive execution and give you ways to capitalize on your strengths, address areas of weakness, and hopefully uncover any blind spots you may have. execution is the root of the word "executive," and excellence in this area is the minimum criterion for success as a business leader. your credibility depends on the results you get. that said, consider this statistic: "more than 64 percent of c-level executives from 250 midsized to large companies in the united states and the european union have said that being able to execute, to 'react quickly to changing business opportunities, models, technologies, and processes is critical for their success, ' and yet is nearly impossible to achieve." as an executive, you are relentlessly hounded to produce great quarter-over-quarter execution. pressured from all sides, with little time for missed expectations, it is no wonder that turnover is so high in the executive ranks. my estimate-based on significant research, conversations with top business leaders, and first-hand experience with more than 1,500 executives-is that one in five newly appointed executives gets fired or quits in their first year. the intense, seemingly impossible challenges facing you are increasing at a rapid rate. this is due in no small part to the ever-increasing speed at which organizations are moving, fueled by a dizzying array of technological advances. the expectations for execution have never been higher for boards, ceos and the executive team.as a senior executive coach, i have witnessed scores of executives fail in their roles due to poor execution. that is what prompted me to write this book. my hope is that in some small way during our time together, i will help you to improve in this critical area. but before you dive into the first chapter, please take the assessment provided later in this introduction. this will give you an idea of where you stand. then, if you have limited time, you can simply read those sections where you scored the lowest. if you are engaged with an executive coach, i suggest you go over the results together and develop an action plan for improving in your weakest area. you can also do this with a mentor. if you don't have a coach or a mentor, then you have already identified a gaping hole in your executive execution. no professional sports athlete would even think of taking the field without a strong team of advisors. neither should you. i am not "selling" you on executive coaching. in fact, you will find this book devoid of any kind of "pitch" for coaching beyond this: take your executive role seriously enough to invest time working with a mentor, trusted advisor, or executive coach. books will only get you so far. there is no more powerful relationship for the executive than one where you can gain objective, unvarnished feedback on your performance from a live human being who is wholly invested in your success.

Reviews:
Surprisingly engaging for a book that is written in some places with what could be described as sparse in detail and devoid of emotion. The foreword sets the tone and scene beautifully and really opens up this little-known corner of history.Needsy
This book provides a compelling snapshot of the life of a man and a city as the world changes from being medieval and takes the first steps to modernity. There are interesting background facts about the attitudes of the times, as well as the legal mindset of the era.gmchugh-uk

It is an undisputed fact that chris thomas was guilty of participating in a brutal double homicide. he was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s parents in november of 1990, was sentenced to death in november of 1991, and was executed by the commonwealth of virginia in january of 2000. chris thomas was one of the last juvenile offenders to be put to death before the supreme court ruled that the execution of juveniles constituted cruel and unusual punishment. peppers and laura trevvett anderson tell the entire story, shedding light on issues surrounding the death penalty—such as the quality of court appointed counsel, the execution of juveniles (from both a constitutional law and public policy perspective), conditions of confinement on death row, and the role of spiritual advisors in the condemned’s last days. while providing insight into the legal workings of the modern death penalty system, the book also offers a rare glimpse of a young, condemned man’s life before and after the crime: a childhood ravaged by loss and neglect, a toxic first love, the brutal murders, trial and sentencing, and, ultimately, a chance at redemption. this is not an effort to excuse a crime but an assertion that even a murderer’s life is worth more than its worst act.

Reviews:
Ola E

For leaders at work this book will assist you to engage your team members in achieving the most important team goals. (All goals are not equally important). Whilst lag measures (like budget performance) are reported after the fact and are therefore too late for the team to influence – 4DX shows you how to create "lead measures" which enable the team to focus their energy on driving the results. Weekly meetings seek staff input and commitment to impacting on the lead measures and ultimately these will impact on the lag measures and the team goals. The clear focus (on the goals and lead measures), engagement as a team member (on their commitments to influencing the lead measures) and the accountability for weekly performance creates a team which holds one another accountable for achieving the goal. It enables the team to celebrate success along the way, assist one another to remove the obstacles and always retain a clear focus on the scoreboard for team performance. Easy to follow step by step instructions give leaders the opportunity of coaching their team instead of driving unwilling participants.
Norman Vincent Peale has been reincarnated as a business consultant! That was my first thought on starting to read the 4 Disciplines of Execution. On seeing the cover pages extolling its own greatness I knew I was in for a tough time. The same name dropping, self-congratulatory tone of the late Mr Peale was off-putting to say the least. However, the book was recommended to me by a leader of my new team where quite a few others had also read it. I'm older and seen this sort of things many times, but felt I owed to myself to at least see what flavour of Kool-Aid the others were drinking. There is nothing new here, and once the self-absorbed detritus is bypassed it comes down to a simple common sense of deciding what you really want, making a plan to achieve it, measuring your progress and reminding yourself of it regularly. Kind of like the Larson cartoon where the guy is sitting on the edge of his bed looking at a sign saying, "Pants first, then shoes." Normally I would just laugh something like this off, but the advertorial nature of the text, sending people to their web site to buy their services as it does, became quite offensive. In particular, the notion that people change their behaviour when you start keeping score was the tawdriest aspect of it. Like handing out gold stars or pictures of unicorns to primary school students, their system of recognition never rises above something suitable for 10 year olds. It understands nothing but the basest psychology of motivation. Indeed, it some cases it would have the opposite effect, I know of many who would find it insulting. If you are a manager, and consider your subordinates to be cattle, then this is the book for you. The techniques will work for a while, at least until you drive your best people out of the company.Economic Irationalist
What a great book on building effective team performance. A guide on how to get action moving with the principle of setting and devoting time to Wildly Important Goals. That action that has the most impact for moving the business forward. The principles are applicable in any environment where the pace of day to day means that those "special' activities get lost that can actually change the outcome. A very worthwhile read and recommend to anyone who is looking for ways of improving performance either individually or in their team or business.LG coach
