3. The Gift Of Failure: How The Best Parents Learn To Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed [Book]
Product Details:
New york times bestsellerin the tradition of paul tough’s how children succeed and wendy mogel’s the blessing of a skinned knee, this groundbreaking manifesto focuses on the critical school years when parents must learn to allow their children to experience the disappointment and frustration that occur from life’s inevitable problems so that they can grow up to be successful, resilient, and self-reliant adults.modern parenting is defined by an unprecedented level of overprotectiveness: parents who rush to school at the whim of a phone call to deliver forgotten assignments, who challenge teachers on report card disappointments, mastermind children’s friendships, and interfere on the playing field. as teacher and writer jessica lahey explains, even though these parents see themselves as being highly responsive to their children’s well being, they aren’t giving them the chance to experience failure—or the opportunity to learn to solve their own problems.overparenting has the potential to ruin a child’s confidence and undermine their education, lahey reminds us. teachers don’t just teach reading, writing, and arithmetic. they teach responsibility, organization, manners, restraint, and foresight—important life skills children carry with them long after they leave the classroom.providing a path toward solutions, lahey lays out a blueprint with targeted advice for handling homework, report cards, social dynamics, and sports. most importantly, she sets forth a plan to help parents learn to step back and embrace their children’s failures. hard-hitting yet warm and wise, the gift of failure is essential reading for parents, educators, and psychologists nationwide who want to help children succeed.

Finally, here is writing about the history of the PTSD diagnosis and how it came to be. And the compassion and caring that these psychiatrists and therapists and researchers express for their patients/clients is very touching. To me, it's as good a book as "The Road Less Traveled" by M. Scott Peck, MD. Easy to read, lots of case histories that actually make sense, and are to the point, and the history of research into causation and the relationship between early childhood trauma, and how the brain adapts in order to "function" after it interprets the trauma. Researchers are actually developing standards for measuring what used to be thought of as "immeasurable". As an accountant and financial analyst, it's the kind of stuff I LOVE!gemsfromjan
A guide for gaining empathy, The Body Keeps The Score: Brain Mind And Body In The Healing Of Trauma is a must-read for anyone recovering from trauma. The book has a three part thesis, supported by science, case studies and experience. 1. Trauma (violence, abuse) embeds itself in the most primal parts of our brains, 2. changing our bodies’ aches and pains into a document of our psychic distress, 3. and our rational minds “hide” the wounds through shame, convincing us the trauma was our fault. As a curious cat with PTSD, this book answered most questions about “how/why” I wound up so easily spooked. It also offers insight into various healing modalities. So far, I’ve tried yoga and psychodrama (#cosplay yay!).andrea.f

Reviews:
Mindset is a great book for anyone who wishes to learn how to learn. Most of us are taught what to learn in schools, work and universities but not how to go about learning. The two basic mindsets covered are the fixed and growth mindsets and everyone has a mixture of these. Recognising the triggers and shifting to the right mindset takes deliberate practice and reframing. Find out more IG: @vitalmindsetsRubik
Dweck presents a dichotomy between fixed mindset (grounded in innate talent/intellect/gifts, excessive judgement, intolerance of mistakes) against a growth mindset (an ongoing love for development/learning, acceptance of setbacks, continued striving to improve). In reality we are all a mix of both, varying along the spectrum and changing over time. More interestingly we each display various mindsets across different parts of our lives (growth in some areas and fixed in others such as artistic, athletic, parental, professional, intellectual, etc). She discourages an excessive amount of praise for success, and instead focuses on encouragement for effort as well as constructive processes. The book has case studies from education, sport, and business each distinguishing between the harm from fixed mindsets and the realised potential from growth mindsets.damay4323
