1. A Concise History Of Japan [Book]
Product Details:
To this day, japan's modern ascendancy challenges many assumptions about world history, particularly theories regarding the rise of the west and why the modern world looks the way it does. in this engaging new history, brett l. walker tackles key themes regarding japan's relationships with its minorities, state and economic development, and the uses of science and medicine. the book begins by tracing the country's early history through archaeological remains, before proceeding to explore life in the imperial court, the rise of the samurai, civil conflict, encounters with europe, and the advent of modernity and empire. integrating the pageantry of a unique nation's history with today's environmental concerns, walker's vibrant and accessible new narrative then follows japan's ascension from the ashes of world war ii into the thriving nation of today.

Reviews:
I really enjoyed this book. It does what it says without getting too bogged down in detail. I have never been to Japan, but after reading this book I really felt I had a better understanding of the country, its history and its people. A good book to read before you travel to Japan for the first time, I would think. Nothing ever happens in isolation, or at least it shouldn't be viewed in isolation, and, in this book, Japan's involvement in WWII, including the lead-up and the aftermath as well as subjects such as the environment, are all explored in the broader context of the nation's history. I would recommend it to anyone who has any kind of interest in Japan, but does not want to get mired down in complexities.

4. A Year In Japan [Book]
Product Details:
The land of the rising sun is shining brightly across the american cultural landscape. recent films such as lost in translation and memoirs of a geisha seem to have made everyone an expert on japan, even if they've never been there. but the only way for a westerner to get to know the real japan is to become a part of it. williamson did just that, spending a year experiencing, studying, and reflecting on her adopted home. she brings her keen observations to us in a year in japan, a dramatically different look at a delightfully different way of life. avoiding the usual clichés–japan's polite society, its unusual fashion trends, its crowded subways–williamson focuses on some lesser-known aspects of the country and culture. in stunning watercolors and piquant texts, she explains the terms used to order various amounts of tofu, the electric rugs found in many japanese homes, and how to distinguish a maiko from a geisha. she observes sumo wrestlers in traditional garb as they use atms, the wonders of "santaful world" at a kyoto department store, and the temple carpenters who spend each sunday dancing to rockabilly. a year in japan is a colorful journey to the beauty, poetry, and quirkiness of modern japana book not just to look at but to experience.

Reviews:
When I first started learning Japanese, I thought it would be painful to understand and a very excruciating process just to learn a couple sentences. Japanese from zero changed that for me, its like a personal teacher with his videos online reviewing each lesson in the book. Very useful for self study, it does not feel bland, and it gives you the information about vocab/grammar very slowly so it is very easy to keep up with. Highly recommend this book if you are trying to study Japanese at home currently and have no native speaker / classroom to learn it in.joshua
A lot of language textbooks dump you in the deep end with convoluted explanations of grammar usage and vocabulary, which can often be too much at once, but Japanese From Zero slowly introduces new things in a progressive way, making it a great choice for beginners. It builds on things you've learnt previously and everything is explained in simple terms. The added workbook exercises are great, especially for not having to need to buy a whole other book to do them. Though, for some people who prefer a faster pace of learning, this series may not be for you, as it does take its time to introduce new things and some people might get impatient with that format, but you never feel as if it is too much to grasp at once. If you do choose to learn with these books, make sure you watch the additional YouTube videos which go through and supplement the lessons, and help to reinforce what you're learning.Brent
I purchased this book after trying several other books and resources for learning Japanese. This is BY FAR the best Japanese instruction tool I have seen. Many books on the subject are too complicated for the typical everyday person on the street to pick up and understand. Let's face it, unless you're a college professor, writer or student currently immersed in the terminology of grammar, you're going to end up like I did; spending valuable time going online to look up what all their overly elaborate terminology means before you can even apply it to understanding its context. I don't want to have to learn more English just so I can understand how to tackle Japanese. But Japanese From Zero 1 is immediately understandable, entertaining and downright exciting to learn from! In the first chapter alone I was already reading and understanding sentence structure and context; something I'm sorry to say took many confusing hours with lesser books; trying to comprehend the instruction of wordy authors more interested in showing off their own vocabulary than imparting that knowledge to the student. There are many resources that are fine for reinforcing knowledge already gained, and some are helpful in one area over another. But for the all-around learning experience that's best for beginning students of Japanese, Japanese From Zero is the best. Once I started on the first book of this series, I immediately bought books 2-4 as well, knowing that I would have all the foundation I'd need to be reading, writing and speaking Japanese in the shortest amount of time possible. Don't be fooled by come-on titles of books that claim to teach you Japanese in a few weeks or months. Unless you have a photographic memory or an extraordinary natural skill for languages, you're not going to retain what you learn. To learn a language properly, you have to do more than merely memorize and endless list of words and phrases; you have to comprehend them and how they're put together. Japanese From Zero gives you that knowledge in simple, understandable terms. From sentence structure and pronunciation to the use of particles (which is kind of a biggie for learning Japanese) with a few interesting cultural tidbits tossed in, it all comes together in a very logical, compelling and entertaining way. And as you progress through the book, it keeps the stuff you've already learned fresh by reviewing and reinforcing it in your mind with fun exercises throughout. Before I bought this book, I had already memorized Hiragana and Katakana, and numbers 1-10, which isn't exactly a huge foundation for learning such a complex language, but it's far more than I ever needed with this approach to Japanese. This book is perfect for any beginner, whether you have previous knowledge and understanding of the language or not. And if you have intermediate skills, there are more books in the series for more advanced students. This book is fun. It makes me want to learn Japanese and I'm always excited to see what the next lesson has to teach me. I can't remember when I've been so enthusiastic about something so daunting as this fascinating and beautiful language. Buy this book, you will NOT regret it!jeditoonfox
7. Ancient Japan: A Captivating Guide To The Ancient History Of Japan, Their Ancient Civilization, And Japanese Culture, Including Stories Of The Samurai, Shōguns, And Zen Masters [Book]
Product Details:
If you want to discover the captivating history of ancient japan, then keep reading… japan, the country of the rising sun, is today known as one of the most prosperous and technologically advanced nations despite not having many natural resources. it is full of hardworking, ethical people that live with a mix of old-time traditions and new-age progressive lifestyles. it's the land of famed and virtuous samurai warriors, for whom loyalty is everything, and of legendary and adept ninja assassins, capable of bypassing any obstacle. no less famed is japanese art, unique in its style and form, from short haiku songs to breathtaking watercolor paintings, both amazingly vivid and simplistic in form. it's the country of buddhist zen masters, who were wise and spiritual, symbols of moderation and morality. at the same time, it's the culture of geishas, who represented indulgence, entertainment, and corporeal desires. today, it is one of the most liberal and democratic countries, yet it still has an emperor on the throne and a long tradition of shōguns, who were more or less military dictators. all in all, japan seems to be a country of paradoxes and oppositions, of yin and yang. yet it doesn't seem to suffer from it; instead, it is thriving, growing, and developing, and it has been doing so for a long time. from those contradictions, a sense of unity and pride arose, guiding japanese history and civilizational development through the ages, leaving an unquestionable mark on the world heritage and mankind. but this is only the surface of an astonishing culture that deserves a deeper look. this guide will lead you into that dive, showing how those characteristics synonymous with the japanese civilization gradually appeared, formed, and transformed through time. learning about japan's history, its past failures and successes and how they shaped their nation, will also illuminate how this civilization developed, while at the same time presenting a full array of interesting stories, persons, and events. – origins of imperial japan and its people – birth of imperial japan and its culture – early medieval japan – late medieval japan – japanese society – religious life in japan – and much, much more! so if you want to learn more about ancient japan, scroll up and click the "add to cart" button!

8. Bushido: The Samurai Code Of Japan [Book]
Product Details:
**independent publisher book award (ippy) winner** bushido: the samurai code of japan is the most influential book ever written on the japanese "way of the warrior." a classic study of japanese culture, the book outlines the moral code of the samurai way of living and the virtues every samurai warrior holds dear. it is widely read today in japan and around the world. there are seven core precepts of bushido: rectitude: "the power of deciding upon a certain course of conduct in accordance with reason, without wavering." courage: "doing what is right." benevolence: "love, magnanimity, affection for others, sympathy and pity." civility: "courtesy and urbanity of manners." sincerity: "the end and the beginning of all things." honor: "a vivid conscious of personal dignity and worth." loyalty: "homage and fealty to a superior." together, these seven values create a system of beliefs unique to japanese philosophy and culture that is widely followed today. inazo nitobe, one of japan's foremost scholars, thoroughly explores each of these values and explains how they differ from their western counterparts. until you understand the philosophy behind the ethics, you will never fully grasp what it meant to be a samurai–what it meant to have bushido. in bushido, nitobe points out similarities between western and japanese history and culture. he argues that "no matter how different any two cultures may appear to be on the surface, they are still created by human beings, and as such have deep similarities." nitobe believed that connecting bushido with greater teachings could make an important contribution to all humanity–that the way of the samurai is not something peculiarly japanese, but of value to the entire human race. with an extensive new introduction and notes by alex bennett, a respected scholar of japanese history, culture and martial arts with a firsthand knowledge of the japanese warrior code, bushido: the samurai code of japan is an essential guide to the essence of japanese culture. bennett's views on this subject are revolutionizing our understanding of bushido, as expressed in his japanese bestseller the bushido the japanese don't know about.

10. The Cambridge History Of Japan: Early Modern Japan
Product Details:
This is the fourth of six volumes designed to explore the history of japan from prehistoric to modern times. volume 4 covers the years from 1550 to 1800, a short but surprisingly eventful period in japanese history commonly referred to as japan's early modern age. at the start, in the sixteenth century, much of the country was being pulled apart by local military lords engaged in a struggle for land and local hegemony. these daimyo succeeded in dividing japan into nearly autonomous regional domains. before the end of the seventeenth century, however, the daimyo in turn were subjected to a powerful unification movement led by three colourful figures, nobunaga, hideyoshi, and ieyasu. it was under tokugawa ieyasu, the last of the unifiers, that japan was brought together under a single powerful command vested in the office of shogun. the tokugawa hegemony lasted until 1868 when it was brought down by the meiji restoration. this volume attempts to flesh out the historical tale with insights into the way that people lived and worked. it examines the relationship between peasant and local lord, and between the lord, as a unit of local government, and the emerging shogunate. it offers new insights into the evolution of indigenous thought and religion and it also deals with japan's foreign relations, particularly the impact of the christian missionary movement. each of these themes is examined by thirteen distinguished japanese and american scholars.

Reviews:
This is an easy read that summarizes a range of key topics. The book expands beyond the scope of the title, touching on thing such as logo-therapy, flow and yoga. Do you want a book that specialized in Japanese culture and its longevity? or A book that surmises a range of ideas in relation to longevity and life purpose, loosely tying it to the authors interpretation of 'ikigai'? I believe they used this title as a unique selling point and not because it accurately denotes the content. This book satisfies the latter, and it did change my perspective on aging into something more hopeful and positive. – Find what you love, make it your central focus, your life's work. Cultivate strong community ties, eat until only 3/4 full. Overall an easy and informative read.Chris
Ikigai was an accessible, easily digestible self-help book. While it was deeply informative about approaches to longevity and eastern approaches to healthy lifestyles, it did not actually delve very deeply into the idea of ikigai. The philosophical background on ikigai was well-informed but the book was not a guide to finding your ikigai, as the blurb suggests. It was of more a study into Okinawan centenarians whose ikigai is just one factor that contributes to their longevity. I would highly recommend this book for those wanting to learn about lifestyle approaches that promote health and longevity, not those seeking help in finding their ikigai.LA
The book condition was like NEW – no turned pages. The book? OMG it is a MUST! if you are hitting a wall in your life, or seem to be going nowhere, get this book. It will awaken your inner self! <3 I bought one for me – and getting one for my best friend on her birthday!purrchitect
12. The Cambridge History Of Japan
Product Details:
This volume covers the end of feudal society and the shogunate in japan, and the growing power of the emperor. volume 5 of the cambridge history of japan provides the most comprehensive account available in any western language of japan's transformation from a feudal society to a modern nation state. it traces the roots and course of political, social, and institutional change that took place in japan from late tokugawa times to the early twentieth century. during this period japan, under pressure from the intrusive west, abandoned its policy of national seclusion and remodeled its institutions to build the strength necessary to join the great powers and to fashion an empire in east asia. the volume consists of an interrelated collection of authoritative and analytical chapters by specialists in the history of nineteenth-century japan that discuss the fissures in late feudal society, the impact of and responses to the west, the overthrow of the shogunal government, and the revolutionary changes that were instituted as defensive measures to strengthen the country against what seemed a dangerous competition with the western world.

14. Showa 1926-1939: A History Of Japan [Book]
Product Details:
A fascinating period in japanese history recounted by manga’s most distinguished authorshowa 1926–1939: a history of japan lays the groundwork for eisner award-winning author shigeru mizuki’s historical and autobiographical series about japanese life in the twentieth century. depicted against his trademark photorealistic backdrops, mizuki effortlessly portrays a nation forced into a period of upheaval and brings history into the realm of the personal. indeed, as a child coming of age in the showa era, the author’s earliest memories coincide with key events of the time.it all begins with the great kanto earthquake, a natural disaster that forces the country into a financial crisis. the period leading up to world war ii is thus a time of economic hardship and record unemployment. forthright descriptions of ensuing militarization reveal mizuki’s lifelong stance as a thoughtful pacifist, critical of domestically disputed events like the nanjing massacre clearly painted here as an atrocity. this first volume in a four-part series is a captivating historical portrait tracking the industrial and societal developments that would come to shape japan's foreign policy in the interwar period.

These books are amazing. They have a lot of vocabulary with example sentences. The sentences also include simple grammar so you can practice those as well. And there’s audio as well! I’m putting all the vocabulary into anki with the sentences and audio. The only thing that’s a little bothersome: they included a red sheet to hide the words. But sometimes theres an explanation underneath the vocabulary and it’s not in red so I sometimes accidentally look at that.Joey P.

This authoritative and accessible book charts the history of japan from c.8000 bc to the 1990s. conrad totman conceptualizes the country’s history in terms of four major ages: the age of foragers, dispersed agriculturalists, intensive agriculture, and industrialism. within this framework, he traces the changing patterns of human-environment relations and examines their interplay with the more familiar realms of political, socio-economic, and cultural history. the book treats the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries in considerable detail and gives fullest coverage to the twentieth century when this island nation became a major player on the stage of world history. in its survey of this recent history, it explores: diplomatic and domestic political affairs; economic development and change; class, gender, and ethnicity; ideology and political punditry; cultural production in the arts; letters, music, and popular entertainment; and environmental issues. for the second edition, an epilogue has been added looking at japan today and tomorrow, paying particular attention to environmental and diplomatic issues.
