1. Perfumes: The Guide [Book]

Product Details:
The first book of its kind: a definitive guide to the world of perfume luca turin and tania sanchez are experts in the world of scent. turin, a renowned scientist, and sanchez, a longtime perfume critic, have spent years sniffing the world's most elegant and beautiful—as well as some truly terrible—perfumes. in perfumes: the guide, they combine their talents and experience to review more than twelve hundred fragrances, separating the divine from the good from the monumentally awful. through witty, irreverent, and illuminating prose, the reviews in perfumes not only provide consumers with an essential guide to shopping for fragrance, but also make for a unique reading experience. perfumes features introductions to women's and men's fragrances and an informative “frequently asked questions” section including: – what is the difference between eau de toilette and perfume? – how long can i keep perfume before it goes bad? – what's better: splash bottles or spray atomizers? – what are perfumes made of? – should i change my fragrance each season? perfumes: the guide is an authoritative, one-of-a-kind book that will do for fragrance what robert parker's books have done for wine. beautifully designed and elegantly illustrated, this book will be the perfect gift for collectors and anyone who's ever had an interest in the fascinating subject of perfume.read luca turin and tania sanchez's posts on the penguin blog.

Reviews:
I recommend this little perfume companion. It features an intense range of little comments on perfume, from classics like Britney Spears Fantasy to lesser known European imports like Chanel No. 19. I say comments rather than reviews, because LT and TS enjoy showing off their knowledge of perfume history and classical music, and often sidestep actually describing what the fragrance smells like. Which to me is fine since there is nothing like experiencing Etat Libre d'Orange's Secretions Magnifique in person. They also help you find perfume that comes in nice hip looking bottles (Le Labo) and ones with terrible bottles (Creed) which is important, you may want to indulge your sense of smell, but be careful not to ruin its unique evocations with a garish side glance via your peripherins visuals. Just remember that LT has a doctorate in something scientific, which means everything he says is true.
If you are familiar with the other books on the subject written by Turin and Sanchez, you will be pleased to find more of same contained herein: witty, insightful, informative (and often hilarious!) commentary on the world of fragrances, both current and past. If this is your first foray into this particular world, you are in for a pleasant surprise! Warning: be prepared to spend some time (and $) seeking out fragrances that pique your interest. 🙂artandmusic22
An entertaining and informative guide that explores the key elements of perfumery while answering many questions about it. Includes reviews and ratings of several offerings that span feminine, masculine and unisex. Highly recommended for novices and experienced noses alike.banditman54
2. The Perfect Scent: A Year Inside The Perfume Industry In Paris And New York [Book]

Product Details:
From the new york times perfume critic, a stylish, fascinating, unprecedented insider's view of the global perfume industry, told through two creators working on two very different scents.no journalist has ever been allowed into the ultrasecretive, highly pressured process of originating a perfume. but chandler burr, the new york times perfume critic, spent a year behind the scenes observing the creation of two major fragrances. now, writing with wit and elegance, he juxtaposes the stories of the perfumes — one created by a frenchman in paris for an exclusive luxury-goods house, the other made in new york by actress sarah jessica parker and coty, inc., a giant international corporation. will she match the success of jennifer lopez? does she have the international fan base to drive worldwide sales? 5. will his pilgrimage to a garden on the nile supply the inspiration he needs? the perfect scent is the story of two daring creators, two very different scents, and a billion-dollar industry that runs on the invisible magic of perfume.
Reviews:
A wonderfully interesting story giving an insight about the workings of the industry… unfortunately the author is not so polished as a novelist as he seems to be a journalist. Having said that, if you're interested in the industry, then it's still a good read.Tracey Santa
I came to this as a fan of Chandler Burr's fragrance reviews already, some of which I've clipped out not because I wanted to try the fragrance, but because the language is both so gorgeous and precise at the same time. So I came to this book with a great deal of anticipation and was not disappointed. It reads like a novel, with great characters and plot, and the world of perfume making is so exotic and unlike anything I can ever imagine that there is something intriguing and interesting on every page. Fun to read, full of great facts (okay, you can use them to impress your friends, I'll admit that) and if you love perfume…or just stories of those who are passionate about what they do…it's a terrific read.hmik6787
This was a great book. Part catty hollywood-esque tell-all and part scientific behind-the-scenes non-fiction novel. Highly recommend.lighteast

10. Jitterbug Perfume: A Novel [Book]
Product Details:
Jitterbug perfume is an epic.which is to say, it begins in the forests of ancient bohemia and doesn’t conclude until nine o’clock tonight (paris time). it is a saga, as well. a saga must have a hero, and the hero of this one is a janitor with a missing bottle.the bottle is blue, very, very old, and embossed with the image of a goat-horned god. if the liquid in the bottle actually is the secret essence of the universe, as some folks seem to think, it had better be discovered soon because it is leaking and there is only a drop or two left.
Reviews:
This book is a MUST read if you're a literally enthusiast. NO ONE I've ever read can weave a story this verbally colorful, intricate and with such sophisticated reticulation and make it so totally believable!! One of his best works ever. You'll be sold by the very first enigmatic page! He has been described as a verbal "breakdancer" which I think is so appropriate for many of Robbins' works. If you want a book with a thorough plot; if you want to laugh, be intrigued by mystery, sex, evolution and spiritual ingenuity then pick this up. You won't regret it. On another note, my other two favorites are: Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates, and Villa Incognito.finerwares
At first Jitterbug Perfume seems a tad disjointed, jumping back and forth in time with seemingly random characters. Yet within a few chapters you get drawn into the wonderfully surreal world and find it hard to put the book down. The unique story is topped off by Tom Robbins' lyrical writing. Worth a few reads to really soak it up.twasa
Probably THE BEST book ever written – and I just LOVE used books…. they are so much easier to read and get lost in (new books tend to close themselves and the print is tiny and paper super thin). Well packaged and exactly as described. I first read this in 1987, and I've read it every couple of years until I lost my copy in a bushfire. I replaced it with a new one which I just couldn't get interested in. I'm already half-way through this!ferretgirrrl

16. The Emperor Of Scent: A True Story Of Perfume And Obsession [Book]
Product Details:
The emperor of scent tells of the scientific maverick luca turin, a connoisseur and something of an aesthete who wrote a bestselling perfume guide and bandied about an outrageous new theory on the human sense of smell. drawing on cutting-edge work in biology, chemistry, and physics, turin used his obsession with perfume and his eerie gift for smell to turn the cloistered worlds of the smell business and science upside down, leading to a solution to the last great mystery of the senses: how the nose works.
Reviews:
I was eagerly awaiting this after reading Chandler Burr's Perfect Scent which I thoroughly enjoyed-bon mots about perfume is what I am interested in. Of course there were a few in Emperor but I was discouraged by the amount of scientific process in it-I want gossip not lab reports. I must admit to skipping large chunks of words and turning to references to noses or specific perfumes. I am glad to have read it however- I loved the exchange in India!
In this book, Burr presents the the theories of Luca Turin — a scientist who has developed a radical new theory of how we smell. Proposing a model that had challenged the conventional understanding of how we react to smell, Turin has in some circles been applauded and in some ridiculed. It's a fascinating read, particularly if you are attracted to science.zinodog

Reviews:
Fragrance as a topic in science in its own right is often over looked or is an aspect of chemistry not discussed. This is therefore a valuable text with some fascinating history and a detailed look at the chemistry involved in fragrance. There are chapters looking at naturally derived fragrance and there is discussion about the difference. This is a good text because there are not too many around prepared to go into this depth of chemistry.
18. The Psychological Basis Of Perfumery [Book]

Product Details:
During the many years of its publication and subsequent revisions, paul jellinek's book has been the standard work on its subject. this new edition, translated into english for the first time, was conceived in response to the increased interest in recent years in perfumes and the sense of smell. this interest has come not only from within the highly competitive perfumery industry, but also from psychologists and market researchers. the original text has impressively withstood the test of time and the approach of this new book has been to supplement it with chapters that are now of critical importance, but which were only touched upon in the original book. a market researcher looks at why people use perfumes; a psychologist examines the motivation of perfume choice; another psychologist discusses odours and a perfumer looks at the effects of odours on human experience and behaviour. in the final chapter the editor compares the original author's views with those of today's experts and suggests which aspects are still valid and in what areas divergent views now prevail. this book is written principally to provide a scientific basis to the craft of perfumery and to enable formulators and marketeers to understand why the smells they create and sell have the effect they do. it allows a systematic approach to the development of these products. others outside the industry, including psychologists in academia, will find the book an essential reference source.
