1. Wanderlust: A History Of Walking [Book]

Product Details:
A passionate, thought provoking exploration of walking as a political and cultural activity, from the author of the memoir recollections of my nonexistencedrawing together many histories–of anatomical evolution and city design, of treadmills and labyrinths, of walking clubs and sexual mores–rebecca solnit creates a fascinating portrait of the range of possibilities presented by walking. arguing that the history of walking includes walking for pleasure as well as for political, aesthetic, and social meaning, solnit focuses on the walkers whose everyday and extreme acts have shaped our culture, from philosophers to poets to mountaineers. she profiles some of the most significant walkers in history and fiction–from wordsworth to gary snyder, from jane austen's elizabeth bennet to andre breton's nadja–finding a profound relationship between walking and thinking and walking and culture. solnit argues for the necessity of preserving the time and space in which to walk in our ever more car-dependent and accelerated world.

I was given this book as a gift and took it overseas to write about my trip in Europe. It has questions to answer, quotes to inspire you and so much more. I decided to buy it for my girlfriends daughter for her 21st as she loves reading, travel and being solo. It's the perfect companion.Miami
Bought this book for my daughter who was traveling Europe for 4 weeks. She was too tired tow rite each night. It's quite a hard book and a fair size so not easy to just pop in your handbag. She said there is not a lot of sections for the countries she visited. So if you were going to many countries you are limited. Hope that makes sense.cobbygirl

Product Details:
Born in austria and orphaned at a young age, ferdinand beck was placed in a bookbinder's apprenticeship, by his wealthy relatives. despite harsh treatment he completed the training and felt that it gave him a strong work ethic. he spent the rest of his life trying to balance work and travel. he would take a job for a while until the wanderlust hit him. in his youth he traveled by foot over the alps and around europe. eventually, with help from a relative, he accumulated enough money for third class travel to the united states. he ended up in virginia city, nevada during the height of the comstock lode. he worked in a hardware store which he eventually bought. as a successful older man his wanderlust returned. he made several long trips including a year-long, around the world adventure. in his later life he traveled in style. his handwritten journals tell stories of early travels in europe, the great chicago fire, the excitement of comstock days, stories of lake tahoe in the early days and the struggles and successes of immigrants coming to the united states in the 1800s. in addition to his words, there is a summary of his wealthy relatives who were the largest cotton processors in italy. mr. beck, a natural storyteller, lived his life fully at a time when few ventured far from home.

Reviews:
I bought this book to generate conversations and fun between me and my fiancé. We live in 2 different areas of the country so when we get together it is full of quality time. The book has scratch off sections that do not work. You end up scratching of the entire information. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. During this time of COVID 19 it is disappointing that this book doesn’t deliver what it promised.– Dirk Hansondirk.h
They didn't have the friends edition listed to review but thats the one I've used. Although I did get the couples edition with it. Not sure if illnusenthat one but the friends one is fun we just did our first adventure that was something different. I can't wait to see what the others are like. The mystery of it makes it exciting. I do wish these books were a little cheaper but it is fun and probably worth it since it will last awhile. The camera option is ridiculously expensive though considering that nothing is included with it. I didnt get that off the site but instead got basically the same instant camera on Amazon for probably 80$ cheaper and it included everything along with a neat travel case.sarah.l

Reviews:
We live in an age of swipe right, quick thumbs up and move on, often finding ourselves caught in a state of "doom scrolling" where we aren't even really SEEING any of the images on our social media account. We've become so removed from the natural world. To make things worse its impossible to deny that the current state of our society is growing uglier by the day. Crime rates are rising, people are fighting, towns are too poor to fix pot holes or keep up with any sort of landscaping. It is so easy to fall into the belief that the entire world is this way; I know personally I am guilty of this. I often feel restless and uninspired and disappointed in what I see out my window. Let's Get Lost is a much needed wake up call. It's an invitation to power down and really take in some of the most beautiful spots in the world. Mountains with peaks that glow red and pink at dawn, untouched shores and rivers and paths, forests that beg to be wandered in to. Many of these places are untouched to at least some degree by humans so the natural world is left to really thrive and develop a sense of beauty and wonder that takes your breath away. I had never even heard of many of these places, but I found myself going through my e-copy several times over, lingering a little more on each photo every time I returned to it. This is certainly NOT a read once and never touch again book; That would be near impossible. So power down for a little while, turn off the news and open this book. Dare to be inspired and Awe'd, to expand your mind and perception of yourself and of life itself. I received an e-copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I can honestly say that the e-book blew me away but I truly feel the need to go out and purchase a physical copy to I can fully experience the weight of the impact between these pages.J

16. Wanderlust: An Eccentric Explorer, An Epic Journey, A Lost Age [Book]

Product Details:
The mesmerizing, larger-than-life tale of an eccentric adventurer who traversed some of the greatest frontiers of the twentieth century, from uncharted arctic wastelands to the underground resistance networks of world war ii. deep in the arctic wilderness, peter freuchen awoke to find himself buried alive under the snow. during a sudden blizzard the night before, he had taken shelter underneath his dogsled and become trapped there while he slept. now, as feeling drained from his body, he managed to claw a hole through the ice only to find himself in even greater danger: his beard, wet with condensation from his struggling breath, had frozen to his sled runners and lashed his head in place, exposing it to icy winds that needed only a few minutes to kill him… but if freuchen could escape that, he could escape anything. freuchen's life seemed ripped from the pages of an adventure novel–and provided fodder for many books of his own. a wildly eccentric dane with an out-of-nowhere sense of humor, his insatiable curiosity drove him from the twilight years of arctic exploration to the golden age of hollywood, and from the burgeoning field of climate research to the danish underground during world war ii. he conducted jaw-dropping expeditions, survived a nazi prison camp, and overcame a devastating injury that robbed him of his foot and very nearly his life. through it all, he was guided not only by restlessness but also by ideals that were remarkably ahead of his time, championing indigenous communities, environmental stewardship, and starting conversations that continue today. meticulously researched and grippingly written, wanderlust is an unforgettable tale of daring and discovery, an inspiring portrait of restlessness and grit, and a powerful meditation on our relationship to the planet and our fellow human beings. reid mitenbuler's exquisite book restores a heroic giant of the last century back into public view.

Reviews:
A Woman's Passion for Travel: True Stories of World Wanderlust is a collection of forty-two travel experiences as written by various women. These stories educate, inspire, and entertain readers with the lessons learned and situations survived by these adventurous world travelers. This book is separated into five sections: Passion for Travel, Some Things To Do, Going Your Own Way, In the Shadows, and The Last Word. Passion for Travel contains twelve articles. All of the articles in this section are written by women who travel because of their passion or with a great deal of passion. Stories range from the hilarious Looking for Abdelati (that follows the author through an obstacle course of misunderstandings and extremely strange experiences to the house of Abdelati) to the heartwarming Guardians of the Dark (that shares the power of the female bond as the author and her young daughters spend time in Mexico). The second section of this book, Some Things To Do contains twelve articles. The title of this section suggests that it might contain articles that reveal great things for women to do while traveling. However, as I read many of these articles I often felt both horrified and strangely proud of these women as they not only survived but also thrived in these difficult situations. I think this section should have been called Some Things Not To Do, the title of one article, Scorpion Hunting, probably says it all. Going Your Own Way, the third section, also contains twelve articles. This section is full of inspiring tales of women who used travel to remake and renovate their lives. Some of these accounts are fall on the floor hilarious, like the Lushes (best described as wine, women, and song) and Toiletopia (where the author speaks at an interesting conference). Others such as Italian Affair and Three's a Crowd are inspiring and touch the reader deeply as these women find embark on a new chapter of their lives. In the Shadows is a little shorter than the previous sections, containing only five articles. These articles remind us about the dangers of traveling alone in foreign countries and the realities of life for women around the world. My favorite article in this section was Where is the Girl Who Speaks English? This article poetically and tastefully demonstrates the realities of life for women in many countries while sliding in a little grain of hope. The Last Word contains the final article My Mother's Boots. I think this is an apt article to end this book. Not only does this article provide a powerful image of the female traveler but it also illustrates a continuation between our mothers and us as adventures and passionate travelers. A Woman's Passion for Travel: True Stories of World Wanderlust is entertaining and inspirational. This book leaves the reader with a renewed sense of purpose. The reader is also inspired to be more adventurous, more confident, more willing to be themselves.fibro_doc
