Reviews:
This is an excellant book for someone that can understand thoughts conveyed in short simple sentences . This book is comprised of answers to unasked questions . The questions are part of the answer . The book was written by a Chinese General about 800 years ago and has to do with observations made by him through the years of many battles that will indicate those things one must know to prevail . Modern day example : "The person that knows land navigation will find their way . The person that does not know land navigation must hope to be found" .He learned from experience and now you can learn from his . This is not geared just to war but to the art of knowing your advisary and the borders within which you are functioning .These observations are necessary in business as well . Pretty simply put , you must pay attention to all the aspects of any given situation and know how to use this information to your advantage . You can't lose by purchasing this book . If it does not help you it would make an excellent regift .trucker6

4. The Art Of War (Chiron Academic Press – The Original Authoritative Edition) [Book]

Product Details:
The art of war (chinese: 孫子兵法; pinyin: sūnzĭ bīngfǎ) is an ancient chinese military treatise attributed to sun tzu, a high-ranking military general, strategist and tactician, and kindred to the realpolitik of his time, termed in china as legalism. the text is composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. it is commonly thought of as a definitive work on military strategy and tactics. it has been the most famous and influential of china's seven military classics, and "for the last two thousand years it remained the most important military treatise in asia, where even the common people knew it by name." it has had an influence on eastern and western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond. beyond its military and intelligence applications from earliest days to the present time, the art of war has been applied to many fields well outside of the military. much of the text is about how to fight wars without actually having to do battle: it gives tips on how to outsmart one's opponent so that physical battle is not necessary. as such, it has found application as a training guide for many competitive endeavors that do not involve actual combat. there are business books applying its lessons to office politics and corporate strategy. many companies make the book required reading for their key executives. the book is also popular among western business management, who have turned to it for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive business situations. it has also been applied to the field of education. the art of war has been the subject of law books and legal articles on the trial process, including negotiation tactics and trial strategy.

Great reading & thought process ! Thomasthokur68
Very poor writing and translation. It is difficult to read in certain areas due to errors that should have been edited prior to printing.lysyca2
It's a shame that the United States (my home country) doesn't follow these concepts. There would have been no war in Vietnam, no invasion of Iraq which has so greatly strengthened Iran, and we would have learned the lesson that both Alexander the Great and Russia did – that invading Afghanistan is a fool's errand.385766msu

7. Directorate S: The C.i.a. And America's Secret Wars In Afghanistan And Pakistan [Book]

Product Details:
Winner of the 2018 national book critics circle award for nonfiction longlisted for the 2018 national book award for nonfiction from the pulitzer prize-winning author of ghost wars, the epic and enthralling story of america's intelligence, military, and diplomatic efforts to defeat al qaeda and the taliban in afghanistan and pakistan since 9/11 prior to 9/11, the united states had been carrying out small-scale covert operations in afghanistan, ostensibly in cooperation, although often in direct opposition, with i.s.i., the pakistani intelligence agency. while the us was trying to quell extremists, a highly secretive and compartmentalized wing of i.s.i., known as directorate s, was covertly training, arming, and seeking to legitimize the taliban, in order to enlarge pakistan's sphere of influence. after 9/11, when fifty-nine countries, led by the u. s., deployed troops or provided aid to afghanistan in an effort to flush out the taliban and al qaeda, the u.s. was set on an invisible slow-motion collision course with pakistan. but more than anything, as coll makes painfully clear, the war in afghanistan was doomed because of the failure of the united states to apprehend the motivations and intentions of i.s.i.'s directorate s. this was a swirling and shadowy struggle of historic proportions, which endured over a decade and across both the bush and obama administrations, involving multiple secret intelligence agencies, a litany of incongruous strategies and tactics, and dozens of players, including some of the most prominent military and political figures. a sprawling american tragedy, the war was an open clash of arms but also a covert melee of ideas, secrets, and subterranean violence. coll excavates this grand battle, which took place away from the gaze of the american public. with unsurpassed expertise, original research, and attention to detail, he brings to life a narrative at once vast and intricate, local and global, propulsive and painstaking. this is the definitive explanation of how america came to be so badly ensnared in an elaborate, factional, and seemingly interminable conflict in south asia. nothing less than a forensic examination of the personal and political forces that shape world history, directorate s is a complete masterpiece of both investigative and narrative journalism.

10. A History Of Strategy: From Sun Tzu To William S. Lind [Book]

Product Details:
Lind begins with the chinese military literature, then reviews the greek, roman and byzantine works before proceeding to the middle ages. from machiavelli and montecuccoli to guibert and frederick the great, van creveld chronicles the gradual transition from medieval to napoleonic warfare. subsequent chapters delve into the literature of naval warfare, including mahan and corbett, then examine the works of the leading strategists of the early 20th century, including moltke, liddell hart, and ludendorff. the final chapter considers the modern strategists behind such concepts as mutually assured destruction, terrorism, insurgency, and 4th generation war. this brief, but wide-ranging history is an effective education in military thought. it is an excellent introduction to the various strategic works for the neophyte, and an illuminating summary of them for armchair and professional experts alike. van creveld not only describes each thinker and his most important contributions, but explains how one conceptual advancement led to another, and in doing so, makes it eminently clear why sun tzu and clausewitz are so universally well-regarded by theoreticians and practitioners of war alike.

11. Sun Tzu Art Of War. [Book]

Product Details:
The definitive translation of sun-tzu's timeless classic of military strategy, art of warart of war is almost certainly the most famous study of strategy ever written and has had an extraordinary influence on the history of warfare. the principles sun-tzu expounded were utilized brilliantly by such great asian war leaders as mao tse-tung, giap, and yamamoto. first translated two hundred years ago by a french missionary, sun-tzu's art of war has been credited with influencing napoleon, the german general staff, and even the planning for desert storm. many japanese companies make this book required reading for their key executives. and increasingly, western businesspeople and others are turning to the art of war for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive situations of all kinds. unlike most editions of sun-tzu currently available (many simply retreads of older, flawed translations), this superb translation makes use of the best available classical chinese manuscripts, including the ancient "tomb text" version discovered by archaeologists at linyi, china. ralph sawyer, an outstanding western scholar of ancient chinese warfare and a successful businessman in his own right, places this classic work of strategy in its proper historical context. sawyer supplies a portrait of sun-tzu's era and outlines several battles of the period that may have either influenced sun-tzu or been conducted by him. while appreciative of the philosophical richness of the art of war, this edition stresses sun-tzu's practical origins and presents a translation that is both accurate and accessible.

12. Strategy: Second Revised Edition [Book]
Product Details:
During his long life, basil h. liddell hart was considered one of the world's foremost military thinkers. in his writing, he stressed movement, flexibility, and surprise. he saw that in most military campaigns, it was vital to take an indirect approach. rather than attacking the enemy head-on, one must dislocate their psychological and physical balance. with key examples from world war i and world war ii (think trench warfare vs blitzkreig), liddell hart defines the practical principles of waging war—“adjust your end to your means,” “take a line of operation which offers alternate objectives”—and proves they are as fundamental in the worlds of politics and business as they are in warfare.

Interesting philosophy compared to Western Military Doctrine.Muhammad
Most of these rules involving physical warfare can be EASILY applied to phsychological, and MINOR confrontations in everyday life!! I even asked my 10 year-old(very"sharp")niece if she had any enemies at her school, and then I told her,if a confrontation becomes unavoidable, she should let her enemy seek HER out,and ALWAYS come to HER because this person will EXPEND valuable energy looking to find her, while she waits and SAVES her energy,so when the confrontation takes place, she will be FULL of energy, while her enemy has USED-UP all of their energy,so that their energy is on EMPTY!! I then told her that attacking emptiness with fullness,is like dashing stones against EGGS!! I told her:"You should always be the STONE,never the egg!!She really seemed to understand this point, and reminds me from time to time that she allows her foes to come to her!! This is an all-around profound book, that I've always wanted to own!!atuc8994
