Unfortunately Oster has "missed the point" in some ways. Oster still presents birth as risky and somewhat an illness, at a time where society is beginning to recognise that it is not so. Oster would do well to present more information on positive aspects of normal birth, rather than just risks of birth. Oster also writes mostly from a US perspective, widely regarded as one of the worst maternity systems of all the developing countries- this might create inappropriate expectations or even fears for Australian women. However, the text benefits from Oster's experience in examining research for validity, so information is generally of good quality.Student Midwife

What a find! Natalie Diaz offers tons of advice- so much of what I needed to hear. But this is not just advice as in "you MUST do this and you MUST do that". After reading other parent to be manuals I notice everyone has their own strong opinion and I was confused more so than relieved to read other books. What to do? Who is right? Who is wrong? I was very excited about this book when I ordered it, I knew that some of it would be americanised because the writer is American. But there are quite a few chunks that I needed to skip as It wasn't relevant to me living In Australia. In saying that there are lots of good points in this book that I would use and there are lots of things I didn't think about that I am no considering doing especially after the babies are born and how to handle feeding. This books only strength is the layout week by week through the trimesters but everything else is problematic: the “chummy” writing style, “bro to dad-daycare” themes, and misogynistic and outdated tones throughout. First if all this is a great concept. Moms are not the only ones experiencing Pregnancy for the first time. This little book contains lots of detailed information for Dads that they may not think to ask. Besides the normal details about what the baby is doing week to week, this book includes many other features like what the Mom is going through. It gives good advice on how the Dad should navigate the ups and downs of being pregnant. How to support their partner, what to ask and what not to ask! It gives good lists and timelines to help them prepare the nursery, the home and their lives to be ready. I think this book is very useful yet not over whelming. Just enough information to read for a few minutes each week to be more ready and involved. It even goes on for about 3 months after the baby is born to help guide them through infancy.
